Course Outline SEMESTERS 1 & 2 YEAR 2014-2015 COXSACKIE-ATHENS CENTRAL SCHOOLS COURSE TITLE: Spanish 1 (8th Grade) INSTRUCTOR Erin Chmielewski I. COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will become proficient in Spanish 1 by learning about different Spanish speaking countries (and States) and by learning basic vocabulary and grammar topics. II. TEXT(S) AND OTHER MATERIAL: ¡Exprésate! Spanish Level 1A & 1B, iPads (8th Gr.) III. LEARNING OUTCOMES/COURSE OBJECTIVES a. Students will be proficient in the NYS Standards for LOTE (Languages Other Than English): i. Speaking Skills ii. Listening Comprehension iii. Reading Comprehension iv. Written Skills v. Culture b. Students will be proficient in the following vocabulary topics: i. Greetings, Getting to know each other, Likes and Dislikes, School Life, Home Life (Family & Activities), Food, Body, Travel, Shopping c. Students will be proficient in the following grammar topics; i. Present tense conjugation of: -AR, -ER & IR verbs, Irregular verbs, stem-changing verbs, reflexive verbs ii. Pronouns: subject, direct object iii. Commands: affirmative & negative informal iv. Past Tense: -AR, -ER & IR verbs, Irregular verbs IV. COURSE SCHEDULES/ASSIGNMENTS We will be going over the topics in order in the textbook: Chapters 1-10. Students will do homework in packet form/8Th Gr: iPads Spain: Greetings, numbers 1-100 +, telling time, days of the week, months alphabet o Grammar: Subjects, verbs, subject pronouns, punctuation, accents, Ser, Estar Puerto Rico: Likes & Dislikes, Describing people o Grammar: Gender & Adjective agreement, Question formation, Ser with Adj. , gustar, preposition de Texas: Sports, Leisure & Weekend activities o Grammar: Gustar, Present tense: Querer, -AR verbs, ir, jugar, Weather Costa Rica: School Life (supplies, classes, events, rooms) o Grammar: Indefinite Articles, a + time, Ir + a + infinitives, tag questions, Present tense: tener, venir, -ER & -IR verbs, verbs with irregular Yo forms Chile: Home Life: (family members, describing people, rooms, furniture, chores, where you live) o Grammar: Possessive Adjectives, Stem-Changing verbs, Estar *(w/prepositions), tocar & parecer V. México: Eating: (food, dinnerware, body parts/going to the Dr.) o Grammar: Ser vs. Estar, Stem-Changing verbs, Restaurant Q&As DO & DOPs, +informal commands, Argentina: Healthy Body & Mind: (exercise, prepping for school/bedtime, o Grammar: Reflexive Verbs, infinitives, SCV, estar/sentirse/tener, -informal commands, obj. & reflex w/commands Florida: Shopping: (apparel, stores in the mall and their items o Grammar: #s to 1 million, demonstrative adj., comparisons, quedar (to fit), Preterite –AR verbs, Preterite of Ir La República Dominicana: Let’s Party!: (Holidays, celebrations, foods, activities) o Grammar: Preterite –ER & -IR verbs, Ver, pensar que & w/infinitives, DOPs, conocer & personal a, Present Progressive Perú: Travel: (modes of transport, activities, travel items) o Grammar: Preterite: -car, -zar, -gar, hacer, informal commands METHODS OF EVALUATION AND GRADING Tests & Quizzes: 60%: Quizzes will be broken up by section (grammar or vocabulary) and are short answer format. Tests are longer and count twice. They include listening, reading comprehension and a written section. Homework Assignments/Classwork: 20%: Homework is generally packet activities. It is to be done nightly (in the packet) or by using the iPad. Participation: 20%: Daily participation (Speaking in the target language [while working with a partner, giving answers, etc], coming to class prepared and behavior). Per 8th Grade Homework Policy: partial credit is allowed for 1 day late on home work assignments. Averages are determined by the percentages above. Students must pass the Foreign Language Proficiency Equivalency [FINAL EXAM] (with a 65%) [and the class] to earn 1 High School credit for the class.
