Day Reporting Center Observation Sociology 481 Winter 2009 Visit the Day Reporting Center on the day and time you signed up, which will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday evening. The following are instructions from the Day Reporting Center: * Location of Day Reporting Center: 150 East Center Street Provo, Utah 84601 We are located in the tall State building on Center Street between 1st and 2nd East (The same building as the DMV). We are on the bottom floor (push floor "LL" in the elevator.) You will see 2 security windows where you can talk to staff members – go to window to your right as you exit the elevator area. Let the staff member know you are there from Dr. Bahr's class to observe. * Please arrive by 5:15 p.m. and plan on being there until about 8:00 pm. appropriately – no shorts, tank tops, or revealing clothing. Please dress * Please understand we will most likely already be busy by the time you arrive. We apologize in advance! Feel free to follow us around, ask questions, and try to watch and learn everything you can from observation. We would appreciate it if you would not work on homework, talk on cell phones, or visit with each other about non-DRC related topics. This can be distracting to us and make it difficult for the secretary at the front window to hear the clients checking in. Your time will primarily be spent sitting in on DRC classes (you should be able to make 2 classes during the evening), and observing the drug testing process in the UA Lab. * Please be aware we are dealing with criminal offenders in this program. Do not discuss any of your personal information with the clients. Any discussion of a client's situation or personal history outside of the DRC setting is strictly prohibited – if you find you know an individual enrolled in our program, please keep any information confidential when you leave. * Please contact me or the DRC secretary if you have any questions: Martene Mackie, Supervisor: 344-1201 Dianna (Mona) Lotto, Secretary: 344-1200 After completing your observation, each team is to write a brief paper (2-4 pages) in which you (1) describe your key observations, (2) identify the philosophy on which the day reporting center is based, (3) evaluate the operation of the day reporting center using sociological theory, and (4) given your analysis, make three recommendations for improving the DRC so it can help offenders successfully complete their probation or parole.
