Student Certification in Teaching Fundamentals
Program for Pitt Public Health Students
Select from a non-credit program or a three credit course
About | The Student Certification in Teaching Fundamentals program is for current Pitt Public Health students
who are enrolled in a degree program. Students selecting the non-credit program earn credit towards the
certification by attending workshops on teaching topics. Students selecting the credit program enroll in the
Practicum in University Teaching (FACDEV 2200) course offered in the fall and spring semesters.
Upon completion of the program (credit or non-credit), students are awarded a certificate of completion and a
letter from the Associate Dean of Education. Copies of these documents are stored in the student’s academic
file housed in the GSPH Office of Student Affairs.
There are four major areas covered in the certification:
- Teaching Fundamentals
- Mentoring/Advising
- Classroom Methods
Both options, non-credit or credit, cover these topics. See below for further details.
- Ethical Issues
Non-credit program | Workshops are held throughout the academic year at GSPH and year-round at the
University’s Center for Instructional Design and Distance Education (CIDDE). Participation in workshops for
certificate credit will be tracked by the Graduate School of Public Health Office of Student Affairs.
Requirements | Students are required to participate in a minimum of five workshops to earn the
certificate. A workshop covering each of the four areas above must be completed. One elective
workshop may be selected from other CIDDE teaching workshops or designated teaching focused
workshops held at Pitt Public Health.
2015-16 Schedule of Teaching Focused Workshops | Details will available on the Professional
Development Workshop Series Web page soon!
CIDDE Workshops | Held year-round | A complete list available at: www.cidde.pitt.edu/workshops.
Credit course | The Practicum in University Teaching (FACDEV 2200) is a three credit course offered in the
fall and spring semesters. It is taught by faculty from the Center for Instructional Design and Distance
Education (CIDDE). The course covers the four areas listed above, but also includes student exercises and a
teaching practicum. Further details are available by searching for the course through the Student Service
Center in the My Pitt portal.
Certification Progress and Completion | Completion of the certification (credit or non-credit) is tracked by
the Graduate School of Public Health Office of Student Affairs. Contact Quinten Brown (qcb1@pitt.edu) for
