ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Ruperal acknowledged freshmen sitting in back.
Professor Santa J. Ono was acknowledged. Begins his speech.
Ono enjoys Facebook. Thanks Lane for introduction. He is going to talk about the
strategic plan. Anyone present at convocation? Talk about role that we are going to play
in implementing the strategic plan. Came from emery uni. View him as a partner..
Looking forward to working with students. Don’t be shy in contacting him by email. It’s
a treat for him to be here. Lane suggested he begin with a few words about himself. Full
page article about Ono. Really good job describing the type of person he is. Senior vice
president of academic affairs. He works in Van Warmer Hall. He had a faculty
appointment in the school of medicine. Appt in McMicken. Key objectives: to connect
and understand the aspirations of the members of the community. Strategic plan= road
map for the next 9 years. Focus on health care, the economy, and sustainability. AAU American Associations of Universities- plan strategically about the future of higher
education. Take President Williams plan and refine it, master it. Prioritizing and targeting
what is found important. Invest further in the co-op experience, intern positions. Aim to
be the best in the U.S. Task to work with UC board of trustees, staff, and alumni. Find
new areas of activities or scholarship. Need for plan is important. Clear evidence that
comm. has developed a plan. State and federal will want to see the plan as a prerequisite
before we see money. Without plan, resources will deploy. UC could move to chaos.
Needed to align president’s broad vision. Ensure that the academics and finances are all
aligned. Needs connections between the president and staff and academic and student
groups. Must be a real plan with real consequences. Will be regular assessments of
progress. Difficult aspect, honest self- assessment of strengths and weaknesses. Decisions
must be data driven. Top to bottom analysis of strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately
focus budget on what is important at UC. What is really the core? Thanks Lane. First of
many direct conversation with students. Sir Ken Robinson, “It will be very importa nt for
me to be in dialogue with you, the students.” Happy to give updates to news record. Later
stage, appoint a steering committee- students. He will count on students to be an
important part of this plan. Inquires about questions.
In analysis of AAU, where are we really falling behind academically?
Ono- well within that 62. How can students help? Satisfaction, performance, retention.
Together think about ways to enhance connectivity between faculty and students. Set up
mentoring programs. Will listen to ideas. Cost of textbooks- satisfaction of students.
Overall budget of scholarships-more effective in enrollment and admissions. Make cost
of UC more obtainable.
How do you motivate the average college student to get feedback and participate?
Ono- Try to connect. Professors need to appear accessible and act like they care.
Quinn-How often does the university evaluate the professors and how do they do this?
Ono-Evaluations are not systematic, not transparent. Students not happy with evaluations.
Should be assessed every time they teach.
Have you heard of the CAT program? How do you plan to bring in more African
American students?
Ono is new to university. Havent thought of an answer. Aware of situation.
How well are the schools communicating?
Schools are building a fort around themselves. Budgetary consequence. Need to make
easier mobility among colleges.
Payne- What are the issues with large numbers of incoming freshmen?
Infrastructure will change. Too large? Not enough space. We are at a disadvantage.
When is quality going to become part of the equation?
Already happening.
What are the possible ways to expand study aboard opportunities?
Talk to Dean.
Lane thanks Ono.
