Among the winners were Courtney Meyers, Brad Dabbert, Erica Irlbeck, Cynthia McKenney, David Doerfert, Kathryn Nelson, Lori Walraven and Stanley Harris. more » ON THE SCENE ‘Texas Gentleman’; CASNR launches Red Steagall Endowed Scholarship Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources has announced the establishment of the Red Steagall Endowed Scholarship within the Texas Tech Alumni Association. Created by friends of Steagall, funds generated from the endowment will provide scholarships to undergraduate students majoring in CASNR. more » This month The New York Times Magazine featured a small CASNR-related news item. Peter Smith noted that Toto, a tiny terrier with a big personality, lives with John McGlone, a researcher with Tech’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences who studies androstenone, a swine pheromone used by pig farmers. After testing it on Toto, McGlone did a wider study that found androstenone effective in calming down boisterous, barking dogs. While canines are probably not imagining big boars, he isn’t sure yet what the spray signals to them. “You don’t have to know why it works; you just know that it works,” McGlone said, adding, “A dog will pause long enough for a postal worker to get out of the yard.” more » Warren Conway named NRM’s Bricker Endowed Chair in Wildlife Management Warren Conway, a nationally-known waterbird and wetland ecology expert, has been named the Bricker Endowed Chair in Wildlife Management in Texas Tech University’s Department of Natural Resources Management, according to officials within the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
