The Department of Geosciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for
a tenure-track position with expertise in boundary layer meteorology and its applications
towards wind power utilization. The Department will fill the position at the Assistant
Professor level by fall 2005.
The position requires (1) an earned doctorate with a major in atmospheric
science (meteorology) or a closely related discipline, (2) a commitment to excellence in
teaching, research and professional service, and (3) evidence of scholarly
achievements. In order to advance in rank, the successful candidate is expected to
obtain extramural funding and publish research results.
The successful candidate will (1) teach undergraduate and graduate atmospheric
science courses, (2) develop and sustain sponsored research programs, (3) supervise
student research work, and (4) engage in service activities.
The chosen individual must commit to an active role in the University Wind
Science and Engineering Research Center, a vibrant multidisciplinary program for wind
characterization, hazards and energy development. Approximately 100 personnel
consisting of faculty, research associates, staff and students (graduate and
undergraduate) from atmospheric science, engineering, architecture, economics and
mathematics are engaged in wind-related research. The program has several unique
facilities including a field laboratory, a 200-m meteorological tower, the West Texas
mesonet, five mobile meteorological towers and five mobile instrument racks. The
mesonet includes 43 complete surface stations, a radar profiler, sodar and a CLASS
