Congratulations to Henley Hornet Choir and Jazz
Singers for a strong showing at the 2015
Williamsburg Music in the Parks Festival. Both

NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY: Henley NJHS
coordinated our school’s Make a Difference Day
project in the fall and collected hundreds of
prepackaged meals to donate to family and
friends of those admitted to the UVA hospital.
This spring, NJHS students all participated in 9
Acts of Kindness with 9 Days Left, which really
pushed students out of their comfort zones.
Students came up with many creative examples to
emphasize kindness and the importance of doing
these acts all year. President Caroline McGahren
spear-headed a Student Buddy program that we
hope to implement in the fall of 2015
ROBOTICS: The following students spent eight
weeks designing and building Lego NXT robots for
our annual Robot Demo Day at Henley. This year,
students were charged with building a robot that
can sense different colors and push balls into a
goal.

HISTORY BEE: The following five students
qualified to attend the Regional competition in
April: Evan Sposato, Ben Christopher, Jack
Emery, Russell Hunter, and Julia Douvas.
Ben, Jack, and Julia advanced to the History Bee
National Championship in Louisville, Kentucky.
Jack Emery qualified for the championship round
and finished in the top 10% of over 600
competitors.
GEMS: The following students have been working
with the UVA GEMS program this year and many
since 6th grade.

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY: Under the guidance of Mr.
Rooks, Mrs. Koury, Mrs. Guerrant and Mrs.
Goodin, 8th graders took on a Civics research
project. This year, a record 95 students
decided to enter their research in the Regional
History Day competition at James Madison
University! They wrote research papers, created
documentaries, scripted performances and
designed websites, on various topics related to
the theme "Leadership and Legacy."
The following students advanced to the state
level of the National History Day competition:

Kielbasa, Mahdin Hossain, Jake Greenberg, Gabby
Eng, Katie Herndon, Cooper DeVito, Aimee Schill,
Ben Montes-Bradley, Carter Spilman, Eli Yordy,
Evelyn Garey, Julia Douvas, and Kella Meier.
The following students advanced to the national
competition in College Park Maryland scheduled
for later this June:
Kella Meier and Julia Douvas (First place group
documentary at states).
Evelyn Garey (Second place historical paper at
states).
Good luck to these students as they compete at
the National level this month.
JUNIOR SCHOLASTIC BOWL: The Henley Jr.
Scholastic Bowl team experienced great success
this year. We participated in four tournaments,
one in Raleigh in the fall, Johnstown in
February, LATTE in Falls Church VA and the first
ever WAIT tournament at WAHS. Henley A
qualified for the National Academic Quiz
Tournaments National Middle School Championship
in Dallas, Texas. Members of the Nationals team
include Captain Jack Emery, Ben Christopher,
Russell Hunter, Gauri Prakash, and Evan Sposato.
Other members include: Camille Kielbasa,
Katherine Mata, Kate Whitley, Julia Douvas,
Evelyn Garey, and Thomas Jackson
Rosin Awards for Beginning Strings go to all the
beginning string players for the year in the
hope that music and string playing in
particular, will remain for each and every one
of them a lifelong, passion filled learning
experience. The awards went to: Allison
Aronson, Timothy Brooks, Georgia Davidson, Anna
Eldridge, Lexia Farris, Isabelle Lewis, Taylor
Overman, Caroline Quist, Carmen Roesso, Anna
Sojka, Hayden Stearns, Kylie Therrien, and Lura
Wolfrey.
DID YOUR STUDENT LEAVE SOMETHING BEHIND?
Lost and Found items have been placed by the
front entrance of the building, by the main
office. There are lots of shoes, jackets and GYM
UNIFORMS. All items will be removed and donated
the week of June 30.
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
OFFICE SUMMER HOURS
We have enjoyed working with our Henley students
and families and, as the school year comes to an
end, we would like to wish everyone a safe and
relaxing summer. We wish our rising ninth grade
students all the best as they transition to high
school and we look forward to seeing our
returning and new Hornets in August!
Our Office hours will be 8:30–3:30 during the
summer.
STRING NEWS
The following String Awards were presented to
those students who made an exceptional
contribution to the Henley String Program:
THE HOPE CITATIONS were given this year to all
the 8th graders IN THE HOPE THAT:
1. Music will be an important part of their
lives,
2. That they will continue to play, and
3. Throughout their lives, music will bring an
added dimension to their success and happiness.

THE CONDUCTOR’S AWARD is given to a student who
has demonstrated the most progress in one year.
The criteria for this award is:
1. Has made a conscientious effort to improve,
2. Takes constructive criticism positively, and
3. Has focused systematically and thoroughly on
particular problematic areas in order to improve
their playing: This year, I am proud to
announce that a large number of advanced
students have made excellent improvements. The
awards go to the following 7th graders: Jessica
Bilchick, Sydney Dutton, Mimi Feurlein, Molly
Gobble, Ineke La Fleur, Ashna Nitzsche, Carter
Tegan, Jeida Brooks, and Elizabeth (Libby)
Terrel.
The conductors’award for the 8th grade students
went to: Lucy Abell, Reid Applestein, Denis
Calinan, Presleigh Fitzwater, Wren Jenkins, Eli
Jessee, and Jessica Walker.
Musician’s Award goes to students in the
advanced class who have made a unique, positive
contribution to the class as a whole. This year
these students have been an immense help to the
teacher, working during rehearsal with other
students, focusing in on problem areas in need
of improvement. The year the award goes to:

left after June 30 will be destroyed.
