Independent Reading Levels
During the 2013-2014 school year, students in grades 3-5 (and some in grades 1 and 2) were assigned a color-coded independent reading level based on their reading fluency.
This is the independent reading level at which the students can read fluently with minimal mistakes or difficulty.
Ask your child to identify his/her independent reading level for books that are “fast, fun and easy” from the following chart. Books above your child’s independent reading level will be difficult to read fluently. Books below your child’s level will be too easy to read. Additionally you can have your child read the first page of a book to you. If he/she makes five mistakes, then the book is too hard. If the child makes three or less
RTM 1Y 2Y 3Y 1G 2G 1B 2B 1R 2R WT BK OR PU 1BR mistakes, the book is “just right.”
Identifying Book Levels
Parents have asked for a way to identify levels on books purchased outside of school to encourage children to read books on their identified independent reading levels. As a result, American Reading Company and Caroline County Schools have offered an online resource.
Parents are now able to access the book database for the summer and throughout the next school year to identify book levels based on the book’s title or author’s name.
