It was another wonderful week of learning in fourth grade. Science: Math: The chapter math test was taken on Thursday. Students will continue to practice and review a variety of standard based skills before Christmas break. Reading: We used this week and will continue to use next week to finish our guided reading chapter books. Be sure to ask your student to tell you about the book he/she read. The students are also asked to take AR tests on these books. Please continue to encourage your child to read at home. It can be a great way to spend quality time together! Thank you in advance to: Bobbie Gorgol for party treats Andrea Lemenager for drinks Marilyn Gagnon for cups and napkins Janet Cunning for take-home treats May warmth, love, and happiness fill your heart. Mrs. Eimen This week in science, students learned more about the animal kingdom. This time we focused on the vertebrates. Most 4th graders are familiar with vertebrates, so vocabulary words for this section are much easier! Students also learned about cold and warm-blooded animals. At the end of the week, students were given a picture of a vertebrate animal to answer questions about. Students really enjoy the vast diversity the animal kingdom has! Social Studies: This week in social studies, students learned about slavery. They read a short story about Harriet Tubman and her outstanding work with the Underground Railroad. Students also practiced their vocabulary for chapter 2 and took a quiz over the vocabulary words. Have a peaceful winter break! Mrs. Kramer In Language class this week, we: Congratulations to Brooke Schafer for an outstanding job on our most recent piece of writing “Maniac Room”. We discussed the piece in class and were able to “see” her room based on the many details she used. Brooke’s work is prominently displayed in the hallway for all to read! Look for the graded Verb quiz from Wednesday, December 12th in your child’s yellow Communicator folder. If you should see “C/S/R” on any Language or Spelling papers, this indicates your child needs to correct the errors, get a parent signature, and return it the next day for credit. This ensures that all parents and guardians are aware of a child’s academic standing. In Spelling this week, we: Learned about words with odd spellings. We discussed each word and the common errors when spelling it. For example, always has only one “l” but is commonly misspelled as allways with two “l”s. Over break, students should use their portable WW charts and flashcards to practice the spelling and pronunciation of Word Wall vocabulary. Our next comprehensive quarter test will be on Friday, January 11, 2007. It will cover 50 words. Forgot your list to study? Spelling lists are posted on www.cusd4.org Due to the various festivities planned for next week, there will not be a newsletter. Happy Holidays! See you next year!
