天主教輔仁大學 991 學年度大一英文課程大綱 Freshman English Syllabus, Fall Semester Class: Department of Electric Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Life Science Class Code: (S1) Instructor: 林德玲 課程目標(Course Objectives): This course will enhance students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing ability at college level. The training prepares them to integrate the four skills as a whole to facilitate communication. The materials including reading and listening provide them new information about special issues and topics of everyday life. Students will use the information to express their own opinions. Students will also practice to highlight and take notes of key words and outline. From the mapping, they learn also how to paraphrase and summarize the author’s ideas before interpreting relevant insight with their own language. To facilitate their ability to use English as means of communication, basic review of grammar, vocabulary and idioms are practiced from online GEPT or TOEIC questions. Students will benefit from these exercises when generating their own sentences since accuracy is the major concern of one’s language ability. Group study and class discussion are managed in a way to inspire students and provide them opportunities to generate sentences and form into a coherent paragraph dealing with interesting, creative, and significant ideas. Attendance includes frequent participation in class, but does not count chatting and sleeping. At the end of the semester, students will finish their own script of a written conversation and present it orally to show the progress they’ve made from the course instruction. 課程教材(Course Materials): The title of the textbook used by this course is Reading Explorer 3, 2009 published by Heinle Cengage Learning. The book covers various thought-provoking topics. The exercises in the book provide students opportunities to use their cognitive strategies to think and develop their own ideas and content. In this way, they can learn English in effective and stimulating way in addition to memorizing. The strategies not only benefit students’ reading and writing ability but also help them complete exams such as GEPT, TOEIC or TOEEL with satisfactory results. To help students prepare language tests, they are required to practice grammar, vocabulary and idioms from Live ABC online materials. Therefore, the grade report includes not only official exams and reports but also scores of activities from Live ABC. For business-major students, Biz magazine self-study project focuses their language ability and knowledge on business English. There will be five quizzes per semester. Students are required to study the materials by themselves, but whenever questions or problems are raised, students are encouraged to seek help in or after class for discussion or explanation by the instructor. 參考書目(Reference): There are significant supplementary materials and exercises on the university’s online study I-Can which will be automatically shown on students’ computer screen as soon as they click the university website. Students are to visit the web pages regularly to follow up the teacher’s instruction. Students are also encouraged to use English only dictionary instead of relying on a bilingual one.
