Portfolio Assessment: A.H.
At the request of the AQIP Teaching and Learning Team, all departments
were asked to examine the seven institutional learning outcomes and
suggest ways of assessing them. The Language and Mass Communication
department acknowledged that its courses primarily assess the first two
outcomes, Thinking Critically and Communicating Effectively, respectively,
through numerous writing assignments. Cathy Clements noted that the
portfolio assignment currently used in Introduction to Writing addresses all
seven objectives. It was also noted that Blackboard has a component for
Electronic Portfolios. Department members agreed to examine the concept
of portfolio assessment as a goal for 2007 – 2008.
Here are some links I have located that address the issue of portfolio
assessment.
Dr. Robert Sterken refers to this as an “individual student tracking project”
and notes that the, “Computer-Based-Portfolio documents the
development and possession of specific skills and learning throughout a
student's college career, and generates a living transcript that can be used
by both the student and the institution as evidence of those skills.”

software for assessing student work. The following link is actually an FAQ

The League for Innovations has published “An Assessment Framework
For the Community College: Measuring Student Learning and Achievement as a Means
of Demonstrating Institutional Effectiveness” which includes a case study for Blackhawk
Technical College, an institution in which the portfolio system has been utilized for some
time. Although faculty acknowledged the advantages of portfolio assessment, they also
experienced difficulty in managing the system. The case study examines four problems
faculty were reporting and discusses the piloting of a solution called iWebfolio.

Teaching and Learning colleagues:
Here are the sites that I explored for the discussion. I will plan to bring
some copies to the meeting today. These are in the order I accumulated
them. I really like the link to the Yavapai colleges. I have put its description
in red.
http://www.maricopa.edu/gvbd/goals/2003/appdx2.pdf
This site takes you to a PDF file which includes reports of best practices
used by the campus in the multi-school system. The reports describe
methods and results of assessments for many areas. The assessments
described cover content and skills areas, including skills like listening and
critical thinking.

I found it very interesting to see the similarities and differences in the
strategic plan of the Yavapai campuses. This file will let you look at all of
the strategic planning initiatives. Just reading the headings might be
enlightening.

This is a great site that has the plan for assessing student learning at the
Yavapai Community colleges. If you click on Assessment Plan under the red
door you can download and read the plan. If you click on the Certificate,
Degree and General Education Program Outcomes you will go to a list that
includes nine areas of General Education. You have to scroll to the bottom
of the list to see them.
