Check list for parents before seeking outside tutors:
____ Teachers should be the first stop for extra help for students.
____ Has your child asked for extra help?
____ Have they attended the sessions offered?
____ If their teacher isn’t able to assist, is there another at the school who might be
available for extra help?
____ When receiving the extra help is your son/daughter doing the work required to
benefit from what is readily available for free?
Would some in-home cyber help be enough for your self-starter who just needs a
little something extra?
The Khan academy offers free assistance on a wide variety of topics. Check it out at
www.khanacademy.org/
For math, the IXL website offers interactive support from pre-K to grade 11 and can
be tailored for the Nova Scotia curriculum. The cost is $9.95/month or $79 per year.
