O RQ UE S TA DE CÁ MA RA RE I NA SOFÍ A
On the occasion of its first visit to Japan the great guitarist Narciso Yepes said: „The
Orquesta de Cámara Reina Sofía is in its own right the true Spanish ambassador of
this music genre“.
In 1983, H. M. Queen Sofia granted the use of Her name to an excellent group of
musicians who made their debut on 28 May 1984, at the Teatro Real in Madrid, thereby
creating the Orquesta de Cámara Reina Sofía.
Since then, the Orchestra’s activity has been continuous, performing such classics as:
Bach’s „Breandeburg Concertos“, Händel’s „Concerti Grossi Op. 6“, all of Mozart’s
„Concerts for Piano and Orchestra“, Tchaikvsky’s Dvorak’s and Elgar’s „Serenades for
String“, Barok’s „Divertimento“, Shostakovich’s „Chamber Symphony Op. 110a“,
Stravinsky’s „Apollon Musagète“, Schönberg’s „Transfigured Night“, Britten’s
„Variations on a theme by Frank Bridge“, etc.
The Orquesta de Cámara Reina Sofía is dedicated to bringing inspired performances of
Spanish masters from the past like the Symphonies of Carlos Baguer (1768-1808) awarded with the Premio Nacional del Disco by the Ministry of Culture 1986- to
compositions by Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados, Joaquín Turina, Eduardo Toldrá,
Fernando Sor, Joaquín Rodrigo, Xavier Montsalvatge, Luis de Pablo, Carlos Cruz de
Castro, Claudio Prieto, David del Puerto, Tomás Marco, José García Román, Jorge
Fernández Guerra, Cristóbal Halffter, Manuel Castillo, José Ramón Encinar, Carmelo
Bernaola, Alfredo Aracil and Antón García Abril, to name a few. The Orchestra was the
first to perform many of theses works, some have been dedicated by the authors to the
Orchestra while others have been recorded on CD.
The Orchestra has performed in some of the most important International Music
Festivals and in prestigious thaters and concert halls: Teatro alla Scala (Milan), Teatro
San Carlo (Lisbon), Palau de la Música (Barcelona), Teatro Nissay (Tokyo), Teatro
Real (Madrid), Academia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (Rome), Auditorio Nacional de
Música (Madrid), Teatro Rossini (Pesaro), Teatro Manzoni (Milan), and in Zurich,
Venice, Bern, Santiago de Chile, Buenos Aires, Montevideo..., in collaboration with the
most distinguished Spanish and international conductors, along with such renowned
soloists as: Alicia de Larrocha, Narciso Yepes, Teresa Berganza, Pepe Romero,
Montserrat Caballé, Félix Ayo, María Bayo, Philippe Entremont, Ingred Häbler,
Hansjörg Schellenberger, Ángel Romero, Nicanor Zabaleta, Cecilia Gasdia, Joaquín
Achúcarro, María Orán, Henryk Szeryng, Jeremy Menuhin, Asier Polo, Milan Turkovic,
Sir Neville Marriner and many others.
For the Orquesta de Cámara Reina Sofía there have been many unforgettable musical
experience. The ensemble is not only known for its multitudinous performances, but
also for its dedication to bringing classical Spanish music to audiences around the
world.
