In 1983 Her Majesty Queen Sofía gave her name to a group of excellent musicians that
debuted the 28th of May 1984 at the Teatro Real de Madrid, finally forming the Orquesta
de Cámara Reina Sofía.
Since then, the orchestra’s activity has not stopped, incorporating to its programs
significant pieces from all time repertoires; Brandenburg Concertos by Bach, all Händel’s
Concerti Grossi op.6, all Mozart’s Concertos for Piano and Orchestra, String Serenades
by Tchaikovsky, Dvorak and Elgar, pieces by Hindenmith, Holst, Haydn, Pergolesci,
Rachmaninov, Vaugham Williams, or Britten, amongst others.
The orchestra’s commitment from the beginning to Spanish music’s diverse styles has
led the orchestra to perform and record some great pieces such as Carlos Baguer’s
Symphonies- obtaining the National CD Prize by the Spanish Culture Ministry- or other
pieces by composers such as: Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados, Joaquín Turina,
Eduardo Toldrá, Fernando Sor, Joaquín Rodrigo, Xavier Montsalvatge, Luis de Pablo,
Carlos Cruz de Castro, Claudio Prieto, David del Puerto, Tomás Marco, José García
Román, Jorge Fernández Guerra, Cristóbal Halffter, Manuel Castillo, José Ramón
Encinar, José Zárate, Zulema de la Cruz, Salvador Brotons, Enrique Igoa, Carmelo
Bernaola, Alfredo Aracil, José Luis Turina, Jesús Rueda, César Camarero, Antón García
Abril, Jesús Villa Rojo, etc.
The orchestra has been invited by the most important festivals and concert halls like the
Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon, Palau de la Música in Barcelona,
Teatro Nissay in Tokyo, Teatro Real in Madrid, Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid,
Teatro Rossini in Pesaro, Teatro Manzoni in Milan, or the Accademia Nazionale di Santa
Cecilia in Rome, and cities like Zürich, Venecia, Berna, Santiago de Chile, Monteviedo,
or Buenos Aires.
In its lengthy career it has closely collaborated with the most important Spanish and
Foreign conductors such as Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Philippe Entremont, Mark
Foster, Eugeni Bushkov, or Sir Neville Marriner, and with renowned soloists and singers
like Teresa Berganza, Alicia de Larrocha, Narciso Yepes, Pepe Romero, Montserrat
Caballé, María Bayo, Hansjörg Schellenberger, Joaquín Achúcarro, María Orán, Henryk
Szeryng, Jeremy Menuhin, Asier Polo, Nicanor Zabaleta, Cecilia Gasdia, Félix Ayo,
Ángel Romero, Yuri Bashmet, Milan Turkovic, Cristoph Henkel, Radovan Vlatkovic,
Josep Colom, Ingrid Haebler, or Elisabeth Leonskaja, amongst others.
In its first tour through Japan, the great guitarist Narciso Yepes stated: “The Orquesta de
Cámara Reina Sofía is, by its own merits, the true Spanish musical ambassador in the
chamber music genre”.
