GDB Annual Report 70 YEARS OF CREATING POSSIBILITY Letter from the CEO: At Guide Dogs for the Blind, we’re thrilled to be celebrating our 70th anniversary of providing highly trained guide dogs to the blind and visually impaired community. But our mission goes so far beyond that simple statement. Behind each guide dog and client is a dedicated, driven and talented team ensuring that the experience at Guide Dogs for the Blind is the best worldwide. Leveraging our 70 years of accumulated knowledge and best-practices, we’ve made quantum leaps toward becoming the pre-eminent guide dog school in the world. Our breeding program is the envy of the guide dog and service dog community, and we send our dogs throughout the U.S. and to a dozen foreign countries to help other organizations with their breeding and training stock. Our trainers are invited to share with other schools our cutting edge training techniques. We’re sought out at leading conferences around the world to provide advice and guidance. And we’re more than happy to do so to raise the level of service, safety and support we provide our clients and our larger global community. Our mission also does not stop with providing the best guide dogs available in the world today. We’ve worked hard to ensure that the service we provide our clients is also world class. We have improved our training model to include a more comprehensive pre-class study program, so our students come to campus knowing what to expect and fully prepared for a successful training experience. This has allowed us to accelerate the in-residence training program, so our clients return sooner to their families, jobs and lives with their new guide dog partner. We’ve also customized the training to fit the unique needs of each of our clients. And with a robust and comprehensive after-class support program, we truly see each of our clients all the way through the process of learning and bonding with their guide dog, to create the happiest, safest and most effective team possible. We’re proud to be able to offer this level of support to our clients, as they are the reason we exist. While I’m proud of our history, I’m even more honored to be a part of the next 70 years—a period sure to be filled with innovation, dedication and an even higher level of client service. In the meantime, let me thank you—our donors, volunteers and supporters—for making all this possible. I hope you find the stories within an inspirational realization of what your support means for Guide Dogs for the Blind and how critical you are in this continuing mission. Paul Lopez President and CEO Letter from the Board of Directors: From our humble beginnings in Los Gatos, California, serving returning military personnel who had lost their sight in the Second World War, we’ve progressed steadily—breeding our own dogs, improving our training techniques, refining our class programs and more—to become the pg. 1 international leader we are today. Yet it’s interesting to note that the basic proposition of training a dog to assist someone who’s blind remains as relevant and viable as it was in 1942. In fact, it has blossomed into a much larger industry. Today there are service dogs for a wide variety of uses, from helping people with conditions like autism and diabetes, to detecting cancer, locating disaster victims and assisting with mental health issues. Despite the enormous advances in information and other technologies, more people than ever before are discovering the magic that can develop between a trained dog and a person. At Guide Dogs for the Blind, we’re proud to be at the forefront of this revolution, a leader not just in the guide dog industry, but across the entire service dog sector. And as you’ll see in the following pages, we’re not resting on our laurels. This year we’ve rolled out our best training program ever, made our programs more accessible for busy applicants, begun construction of a new student dormitory in California, and recruited new leadership—on our staff as well as our board—to ensure that over the next 70 years we remain as relevant, innovative, helpful and respected as we were for the first 70. It shouldn’t be surprising to anyone that throughout our long history we’ve put one goal ahead of all others: staying focused on best serving the needs of our clients—the people who are blind and visually impaired who come to us for a new lease on life. In the process we’ve changed not only their lives, but the lives of many others who make our work possible - our tireless volunteers, our generous donors, and our dedicated staff, all of whom are wonderfully committed to the difference we’re making in the world today. I hope you enjoy this report, and want to thank you again for all you do to make our work possible. At Guide Dogs for the Blind, our communities are our mission, and I hope the following pages inspire you to the same level of excitement, enthusiasm and support for this great organization that I and my fellow board members share. With much gratitude, Robert Burke Chair, Board of Directors 70 YEARS OF CREATING PARTNERSHIPS PROUD OF OUR PAST AND EMBRACING THE FUTURE Seventy years is a long time. “I’ve been with Guide Dogs for the Blind practically since the beginning,” said Betty Mantooth. It was the summer of 1943 and Betty was just 18 years old when she was partnered with her first guide dog Polly. With only three students in class they rehearsed routes in the rural Los Gatos hills and practiced obedience with the only instructor at the time, Don Donaldson, and his assistant, Lois Merrihew. “We thought of ourselves as trailblazers,” said Betty. After graduating, Betty worked for the Navy at the Alameda Naval Air Station as the Navy’s first blind aircraft mechanic – she later married and raised two children. “My guide dogs made a tremendous difference in my ability to do all that,” said Betty. “When people ask me what Guide Dogs for the Blind means to me I say, ‘everything.’ “ Betty describes Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB) as a permanent part of her life – a second home. Betty said that she continues to come pg. 2 back to GDB because the organization keeps improving. “Some schools and other institutions don’t necessarily get better as they get bigger,” said Betty. “Guide Dogs for the Blind definitely has. The kennels have improved, the training has improved, everything has improved over the years. That’s the way it should be.” At GDB, one of our goals is to continually evaluate our level of client service. Over the last 70 years, almost everything about our work has changed: the science of dog breeding, the nature and needs of our clients, the most prevalent causes of blindness, and the approach to dog training. What hasn’t changed is the magic that forms between a trained dog and a person who is blind, and the profound difference that partnership can make in the lives of both. GDB is proud to have served Betty all these years, as she is now with her 10th Guide Dog. Those 70 years of learning and growing that made GDB Betty’s first choice over the years enabled us, seven decades after Polly, to provide a very different dog in breeding, training and ability named Quebec, to a very special client – Jake Olson. “I got my first guide dog, Quebec, at the age of 14 and he’s amazing,” said Jake. Though Jake lost his vision to retinoblastoma (cancer of the eye) at the age of 12, he was determined to pursue his goals and dreams. He came to GDB and met his guide dog Quebec - they were equally matched in spunk and determination, so as a team they set off to realize those dreams. And that they have. Jake recently made his high school varsity golf team and is an active, healthy, on-the-move 16 year old. “Even though cancer did take my eyes, it didn’t take my will to go on in life and be the best I can be,” said Jake. “I’ve been thankful every day since to have Quebec by my side.” The presence of Quebec helped Jake to continue the pursuit of his goals with more confidence and companionship. Quebec will hopefully go with Jake on his first PGA tour, but wherever their adventures take them, Guide Dogs for the Blind will be there for them. It is through these partnerships that we realize GDB provides so much more than mobility to a person who is blind or visually impaired. Time and time again we are fortunate enough to hear the amazing stories of how our clients have found empowerment, companionship, confidence, freedom and joy in their guide dogs. So, with almost 70 years between them, Betty Mantooth and Jake Olson represent what we are all about here at Guide Dogs for the Blind – focusing the power of partnership to improve quality of life. We exist because of our clients, and our goal has always been to continue to improve and evolve so that we can best meet their needs. Now after graduating more than 12,500 guide dog teams, and with over 2,100 active teams across North America, we are proud to celebrate these 70 years and look forward to celebrating many more! PROVIDING THE BEST OF BREED TECHNOLOGY—CARE—SCIENCE—TRAINING—SUPPORT It takes a very special dog to become a guide dog. In addition to expert training, the future guide has to have the right temperament, intelligence, attentiveness, control, physical strength, stamina and health. To provide the top guide dogs in the field, we don’t leave this up to chance. We pull our pg. 3 breeder dogs from the top stock, have cutting-edge labs and science behind us – and we have Heather. Heather Power is the Reproductive Coordinator at GDB, with a degree in exotic animal training and management. “The reproductive health of GDB’s breeding stock is my responsibility and I take it very seriously. I track the seasons of all the females and evaluate and monitor reproductive quality of the males. Our main goal here is to create an optimal number of healthy puppies with the temperament and physical attributes to be great future guide dogs.” Heather says that in working with other guide dog schools internationally it often becomes a symbiotic relationship. “We’re creating partnership so that when we need something we have access to it, and that helps everyone – it allows us all to create optimal guide dogs across the world through collaborative efforts.” Heather is an animal lover who says one of her favorite things is interacting with the dogs on a daily basis. “You really get to see behavior in action and there’s nothing more entertaining than that. I really think I have the most fun job. I get to work with amazing dogs and interact with wonderful clients who are blind and visually impaired from all walks of life. So in essence, I get to the see the final result of what I do and that is very rewarding.” LEADING THE WAY IN GUIDE DOG SCHOOLS GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND’S GLOBAL INFLUENCE Guide Dogs for the Blind takes our global stewardship role seriously. As we help other guide dog schools, whether through sharing training advancements, breeder dogs or educational methodologies, we continually strive to improve the entire field for the benefit of blind and visually impaired people everywhere. In 2012, we shared our trainers, breeding experts, dogs or stock with organizations in these countries to share and improve our colleague guide dog schools. Australia Austria Brazil Canada Croatia Czech Republic Finland France (Corsica) Israel Japan Mongolia Netherlands New Zealand Singapore Slovakia pg. 4 South Africa South Korea Switzerland Taiwan United Kingdom United States Training is the life blood of our work. Guide Dogs for the Blind currently has five certified Assessors on staff, one of the highest levels of certification in guide dog training. Our Assessors provide support to the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF), typically evaluating two to three schools every two years against the standards of the Federation anywhere in the world outside of North America. In this role, we’re proud to have Brad Hibbard, (also a member of the accreditation committee), Kathy Kelly, Brian Francis, Charles Nathan and Marc Gillard on our team. Other GDB trainers are also internationally recognized experts in guide dog training. Michele Pouliot, Susan Armstrong and Terry Barrett have toured and presented across the globe on GDB’s innovative training methods, which they helped pioneer. STATS 12,500 Guide Dog teams over 70 years 2,100 active teams across North America 304 graduated guide dogs this year 850 active puppy raisers CREATING COMMUNITY Puppy Raising is an integral part of ushering our puppies toward becoming guide dogs. We couldn’t do what we do without the help of the puppy raisers throughout the U.S. who work with GDB pups for approximately a year until they return for training. They work every day to socialize, train and teach these future guide dogs. For their work, we can’t thank them enough. SHARING THE POWER OF SERVICE WITH THE NEXT GENERATION Marybeth Hearn first became involved with Guide Dogs for the Blind in 1962 as a 10-year-old in 4H. Now a puppy club leader raising her 43rd puppy, Hearn is an agriculture instructor and FFA advisor at Lemoore High School. “Every puppy in the group comes to Lemoore High School every day and administration, faculty, staff and students alike are so accepting of the dogs on campus,” said Hearn. Recently her program was recognized by both the National and California State FFA Associations as a proficiency project in the area of Small Animal Care and Production, and also won the National FFA title of Chapter Model of Innovation in Student Development. “It is amazing to see my students get excited about a project that has been a passion for me almost all of my life,” said Hearn. “But most importantly, my students are learning to do something for a person that they have not yet had the pleasure of meeting – they are learning to do something for someone else because that is the right thing to do. My joy is watching my students and their puppies grow and become contributing members to society.” pg. 5 Meet the Drake family – all nine of them! “We got involved with GDB because of my niece,” said Jenny Drake. “We were privileged to watch Claire and her family participate with Guide Dogs for the Blind, and this soon became an interest for my 10-year-old daughter, Emma. She decided she wanted to raise a puppy and in March of 2012 we received our first GDB puppy Atlanta off the puppy truck in Fresno, California!” Jenny and her husband Scott have six children: Emma, Jessica, Rebecca, Vanessa, James and John. “We brought home our three youngest children through the blessing of adoption,” said Jenny. When we brought Atlanta home two years later, all of the kids were ready to take on this responsibility. In doing so, it caused my kids to work together in caring for Atlanta – this encouraged their relationship as siblings and was a great opportunity for our family to give back.” Jenny said that the most rewarding part of being a puppy raiser is being able to participate in a need of their community and to watch Atlanta grow as she learns and is challenged to do amazing work. “Atlanta has added so much to our family,” said Jenny. “This really is a fun adventure!” The Volunteer Breeder Custodian job is local to the San Francisco Bay Area. Breeder custodians are essential volunteers who provide day-to-day care of GDB’s valuable breeder dogs and their tireless work is clearly essential to our mission. We thank you all! OUR BREEDER CUSTODIANS In 2010 the Yang Family had a new addition, Parson. This four-year-old yellow lab male is an active stud dog for Guide Dogs for the Blind’s breeding program. Parson has sired nine litters, producing 60 puppies. “Parson is extremely mellow, loveable, and tolerant,” said Benson Yang. “Of course, I think based upon his career, he is extremely social with other dogs and after four years still acts like a puppy around them.” The Yang family resides in Corte Madera, California and said that one of the best things about being members of the Volunteer Breeder Stock Custodian Program is that they each get to spend their lives with a great dog, companion, and friend. “It also makes us proud every time we get a notice about another puppy graduating successfully to provide guidance, comfort, and companionship to another person,” said Benson. Benson originally became interested after a field trip he and his wife attended with their daughter. “We were impressed with the program, and were looking to get a dog. We also wanted to provide support for Guide Dogs for the Blind. This was a win-win,” said Yang. AUDITED FINANCIALS / FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP FISCAL YEAR JULY 1, 2011 – JUNE 30, 2012 Guide Dogs for the Blind was founded on the concept of responsible financial stewardship. Our commitment to our clients is for a lifetime, at no charge, and often involving six or more guides. We make sure we have a sound operating reserve to ensure our clients have continued free access to not only the best guide dogs, but to a lifetime of support and training. Because we receive absolutely no government support, we rely solely on private contributions to continue our mission. pg. 6 Statement of Activities (in thousands) Revenue and Support: Bequests and trusts Temporarily Permanently Unrestricted Restricted Restricted Total 2011 Total $12,547 $2,376 $208 $15,131 $12,964 Dividend and interest income, net 4,332 169 0 4,501 5,672 Contributions 4,088 3,632 6 7,726 5,532 Other 574 0 0 574 1,098 2,558 (2,558) 0 0 0 24,099 3,619 214 27,932 25,266 25,938 0 0 25,938 25,351 Management and general 2,010 0 0 2,010 2,086 Development 3,533 0 0 3,533 3,595 Net assets released from restrictions Total revenues and support Expenses: Program services Capital campaign 248 0 0 248 0 Total expenses 31,729 0 0 31,729 31,032 Change in net assets from operations (7,630) 3,619 214 (3,797) (5,766) 0 (301) 0 (301) 878 Other income (expenses): Change in value of planned gifts Net realized gain 10,240 374 0 10,614 9,189 (17,268) (674) 0 (17,942) 33,363 (7,028) (601) 0 (7,629) 43,430 Change in net assets (14,658) 3,018 214 (11,426) 37,664 Net Assets, beginning of year 292,279 5,866 9,233 307,378 269,714 $277,621 $8,884 $9,447 $295,952 $307,378 Net unrealized (loss) gain Total other income (expenses) Net Assets, end of year Statement of Financial Position (in thousands) Assets 2012 2011 Cash and cash equivalents 5,407 10,998 9 130 2,956 885 Prepaid expenses and other assets 296 230 Note receivable 332 0 273,039 283,343 7,443 7,723 365 387 23,526 21,336 $313,373 $325,032 Accounts receivable Bequests and pledges receivable Investments Planned gifts Deferred loan issuance costs, net Property, plant, and equipment, net Total assets pg. 7 Liabilities and Net Assets 2012 2011 2,919 3,173 145 143 4,357 4,338 Loan payable 10,000 10,000 Total liabilities 17,421 17,654 277,621 292,279 Temporarily restricted 8,884 5,866 Permanently restricted 9,447 9,233 295,952 307,378 $313,373 $325,032 Liabilities: Accounts payable and accrued expenses Deferred revenue Obligations under annuity agreements Net Assets: Unrestricted net assets Total net assets Total liabilities and net assets DONORS / A HISTORY OF GIVING FISCAL YEAR JULY 1, 2011 – JUNE 30, 2012 Soul Mates ($100,000+) The Cella Family Foundation Thelma B. and Thomas P.
