Presidents report 2015
Season 2015 was definitely a year of should of, would of, could of… but we didn't.
Cootamundra 10s: After an extremely successful bonding session last pre-season down at Harden/Jugiong,
the mighty WOLFPACK decided to enter a squad in the local 10 a-side competition at Cootamundra. The
boys managed to make it to the semis but in true Merrylands style the beers were far more important
than the rugby. So we ventured down the road to visit our close friends Jen & Skids at the famous Jugiong
Motor Inn for a little drinkies.
Rugby: Subbies allowed us to move up this season to the 3 team competition, meaning we only had to
field two grades. I was confident that our 1st Grade would be competitive and they proved this correct in
the majority of their games, but unfortunately, fatigue and a lack of numbers probably cost them a higher
position on the ladder.
As for the 2nd Grade team, they were always going to be in the mix. They had a fantastic season, managing
to topple the unbeatable Beecroft at their home ground and almost finish 2nd overall on the ladder.
Unfortunately it was to no avail, as we were ejected from all competitions due to too many red cards.
To all the players that made the effort to represent Merrylands Rugby this season, especially the guys that
had to play two games each week and also play out of position in the front row, I thank you all for your
efforts.
Miss P's Day: By far my favourite day of the season. Once again the club rallied together to honour the
queen of our club in its annual cancer fundraiser. I must admit I was slightly concerned about the day as
we had to reschedule due to wet weather and moved it to the Blacktown game who are extremely
competitive, but as in previous years we have never lost on this day today was going to be no different.
Ultimately, we won both grades convincingly. We managed to raise over $3000 for the Cancer Council
(something we don't have to do but as a club choose to). Congratulations to all involved, especially Nash,
who absolutely thrives on it.
Raffles: As you all know, the club relies on the money we take from Thursday and Saturday night – 50
weeks a year. Benny's summer roster system worked a treat and to all those who helped – Pete, Lukey,
Sandy and myself I thank you. After all, doing the raffles is an easy job after a couple of schooners.
Canteen: Without a doubt, we run the best canteen in Subbie’s rugby. Rob and Anne have been with the
club, although they have no other ties, for decades now and I still don't know why they keep coming back
but they do. Then you throw in Sandy and they make an awesome team with everything running to
clockwork. A special mention goes to Irene for chipping in whenever help is needed. Here's hoping you all
are back next season to continue your fantastic efforts.
Bus drivers: Pete Macklin and Waynos – you would not believe how much I appreciated your efforts this
year, carting these grubs to and from the games. Hail to the bus driver bus driver bus driver.
Sponsors: It's extremely difficult to run a sporting club without the support of sponsors. Thanks to Jugiong
Motor Inn and M&M meats for their sponsorship as the Jugiong Gents in Cootamundra. Schofield Tiling
jumped on board this season and we thank you for your support. If anybody needs some tiling done please
don't hesitate to give Marc a call. Sommers sportswear for our magnificent clothing, that we are lucky to
perform in every week. Our major sponsor the COOLIBAH hotel, Gary and the staff thank you for your
wonderful hospitality and we look forward to your continuing support for many years to come.
Supporters: I would like to thanks all our supporters, wives, girlfriends, partners and friends in supporting
us on all our away and home games it is much appreciated.
The strapping and rub and tug crew: Al Davis, Kevy and Pete, we thank you for obvious reasons.
Committee members: Thanks to all our committee members this year it has been a tough year with many
ups and downs as we were all still learning. Hope to see you all on the committee doing the same roles as
we have all done a great job.
I would like to say a big thank you to Wayne and Irene for washing the jerseys every week. Also for doing
all the little jobs around the club that nobody else likes doing, taking home some of the drunks after some
of our fundraising nights and always being the last to leave the club house after the games and events.
Much appreciated.
Peter Mac has been the back bone of the club for many years now and it is going to be massive task for us
to fill your role next season, but Pete you deserve a break from being a rugby babysitter, so enjoy. Thanks
for everything you have given to this family.
Benny: Definitely the heart and soul of the club. Thank you for your efforts and enthusiasm in everything
you do, such as coaching, match reports, the website, bus hire, all the behind the scenes jobs and also
organising the end of season shirts, even though you didn't go.
I would also like to thank Sandy and my 3 kids for putting up with taking me to rugby every week and
putting up with the late nights and doing the raffles every fortnight. The hard work you put into the
canteen, the fundraising nights and also being the last to leave. Who knows, Sandy may become the next
secretary.
I hope to see everybody plus their brothers, cousins, fathers, uncles, sons and mates all again for a bigger
and better season in 2016.

Secretary’s Report
The start of the 2015 season started out looking promising, and we virtually had the opportunity to choose
between paying in a 2 or 3 team competition. Due to player numbers we decided to opt for a two team
competition as we all felt that we were above the level of the one team competition.
We also welcomed some new players from Fairvale as they were in a one team competition and wanted a
change. Lima and Niko led the crew from the ‘Vales’ and provided a great contribution to our year,
particularly 2nd grade.
The 2nd grade side were very competitive throughout the year mainly due to Niko’s leadership. I can recall
a chat had with an opposing club saying they wish they could have enticed Niko to their club!
This year also saw Jason grow as president and Sandy provide enormous support at home games and all
the other back room duties that usually go unnoticed. Thank you both for the enormous effort you have
put in this year.
This year Ben Davis is the person who has kept this Club going, with his organising of both grades on
games days, continually looking for props! He was also at most training nights working with Kevin in
training. Your efforts were appreciated by everyone this year Ben, great work!
Our coach, Kevin, has also put his heart and soul into each week, doing the strapping with me before
games and coaching and guiding from the sidelines. Great effort Kevin!
Unfortunately, I can’t ignore the poor way our season ended this year, I really feel for the 2 nd graders who,
through no fault of their own, missed out on testing Beecroft (we were the only team to beat their 2 nd
grade side) in the finals series. I think a couple of our senior players really need to take a long hard look at
the way the behaved this year, I won’t name them but they know who they are.
It is because of our extremely poor on field discipline that we may struggle to be invited to play in the 2016
subbies competition. The committee will need to develop a strategy to deal with on field discipline
otherwise this will be the last Barbarian.
Within this strategy should be provision for a Disciplinary Committee and even consider actions such as if a
player receives a yellow card then they do not play anymore that day.
I hope we can come up with a different approach for 2016. On another matter, I have decided to step
down as Secretary this year. I am looking to be involved in some other way, without a week to week
commitment. I have really enjoyed being part of the executive team of the club for a number of years. I
have been part of the Merrylands family since 2000 and will miss being at every game each week.
I sincerely wish all of the Merrylands family all the best for the rest of the year and look forward to being
involved in some way in 2016.
Peter Macklin
Secretary
Farewell Peter Macklin
After 16 years association with the club, Peter has decided to finally retire so that he can spend more time
with his wife, children and grandchildren.
I was asked how I would describe Peter in a few words and it is hard to summarise, but Peter – you are a
man of the highest integrity, honesty, loyalty, and a hard-working family man.
Peter was introduced to the club by his then son in law Usa and immediately had an impact on everyone
with his enthusiasm, dedication and his relaxed attitude.
It wasn’t long before I talked Peter into joining the Committee, where he worked tirelessly – initially on the
main committee, then becoming Assistant Secretary and then Secretary (after the tragic passing of Mrs P).
Peter was a driving force behind the fund raising efforts when our clubrooms were burnt down and also
served on the NSW Suburban Rugby Union board – another position where he worked tirelessly. Peter was
awarded this Club’s highest honour Life Membership in 2007.
Peter played 144 games over his career, which included various Grand Final appearances. He played in the
positions of prop or lock, but the highlight of his career was when he locked the scrum with James. The
low light was when he broke his ankle playing at Macquarie University and I had to ring Cheryl to advise
her that his ankle was broken and their trip to Ireland would probably have to be postponed (Cheryl didn’t
take the news about the trip well).
When Peter was not playing, he played the roles of ground marshal, bus driver, strapper and anything else
that needed to be done.
Most importantly for the club, Peter helped with the raffles most Thursday and Saturday nights – which
allows the club to survive.
Peter loves to party and at his 50th birthday, seeing him dressed up in full drag as Frank-N-Furter – with his
great legs – showed he could even make being a lady look easy.
Peter has also gone through a lot of pressures away from the Club with personal severe illness, Cheryl
being ill and an ICAC investigation at work to name a few, but these hurdles never stopped Peter from
doing all he could for Merrylands Rugby Union Club.
I am pleased that I met Peter, Cheryl and their family and Jen & I are proud to be good friends of Peter.
You are a wonderful human being.
Peter you will be sorely missed by everyone who is or has been associated with the club and you will never
be forgotten.
Thank you for everything you have done.
Cheers

Coaches Report 2015 Season
I would first of all like to apologise to all the committee, players and fans for the way the season ended.
As the coach and V.P, a large part of the blame rests with me. I tried my very best to keep things on the up
and up but in the end I couldn’t deliver. I’ve had a good hard think about what went wrong and there are
more than a few actions/decisions that, given my time again, I would do differently.
Once again sorry for the way 2015 ended.
I would also like to say that 100%, without a doubt in my mind I KNOW 2 nd grade would’ve won the title
were we given the chance. I whole heartedly believe that we had Beecroft and Briars measure. We were
the only team to beat Beecroft all year in 2nds and, despite it being a close score line, we did it with room
to spare. No doubt we would’ve beaten the arrogant pricks in the GF. I hope with all my achy breaky heart
that ALL the regular 2nd graders return for another year, just to put things right.
I hope everyone comes back in 2016 because, in my opinion, I think we had a pretty good year. It was a fun
and memorable season.
I’ll never forget that Thursday night, two weeks before the start of season. Tini Tuitama walked in out of
the darkness and asked “is this the rugby team?”
I remember thinking “Awesome, we could do with a few more backs”, then, one by one, more and more
guys started strolling in, to the point where soon new guys outnumbered the “regular” Merrylands
players. Then I started to notice familiar faces. Puy, Lima, Jye. And I realised “these guys were all from
Fairvale/Lansvale! Our oldest most bitter rival. What the f@#k were all these guys doing here?!”
Kevi and I really didn’t know what to think. I mean sure, we could always do with more players, but
Fairvale players?!?! Surely this was all gunna end in tears!
In the end, one of the most pleasing and heart-warming experiences of the season (and of my whole
despicable, shady Merrylands career) was seeing the nerves and barriers between the “old” Merrylands
player and the “new” guys come down. It was awesome to see everyone pull together. The ultimate show
of this was the away match against Briars. 25 players dribbled in for the game. We were short and
unprepared. But we bashed Briars into submission and took away two wins. Awesome.
I really want to thank all the players for the way they acted toward each other and the club all season. All
the “old” guys like French, Arana and Drew were welcoming and, most importantly, accepting of the new
guys. I needed time to figure out what everyone could do and, despite some ugly slip ups (like putting
Dayna in the centres) everyone gave me the time I needed.
Special mention here must go to Micky P and James Mac for putting their hand up to play front row. If you
aren’t built for the roll, it can really suck. But neither complained nor asked for forgiveness. You both truly
have warrior hearts.
And despite some stand offish moments, all of the “new” guys were keen and willing right from the start.
When I asked guys to play positions they weren’t keen on, nobody gave me grief or spat the dummy, y’all
just ripped in. Puy, Mani, Salvo, Slangi, Levi Burgess plus all the others, thanks big time.
Special mention here must go to VJ. VJ and I had a bit of a rough start, but we got honest with one another
and in the end were BFF’s. I’ve never, in all my years, seen a guy play centres, 5/8 and prop all in one
game. And do them all well.
I also need to give a massive thanks to Lima and Nicko. You guys were absolute gentlemen to me all year.
You never fostered any ‘us and them’ attitude. You gave me all the advice you could about the players you
knew, backed up for just about every first grade game and wore the Wolves shirt with pride. Thanks.
There a few other players I want to take time to mention:
Dolena “Dayna” Heta. When I first met Dayna I asked him what position he played and he replied
“anywhere you want”. Anyone that has spent any time coaching knows this is one of the most sexy things
you can say to a coach. The famous “pull me in tight you dirty bastards” scrum will live with me for a very
long time.
Micky P. At his fittest and best, Micky was, without a doubt, the best loose forward I’ve ever seen in
Subbies. But for whatever reason rugby took a back seat to life’s other challenges over the last few years
and Micky got fat and s@#t. This year however, Micky seemed to be laying off the pre-match beers and
breakfast of champions. He even made a few training sessions. As a result Micky had one of his best years
of rugby in a while.
Puy and Luke. Dynamite. These two playing on either side of the scrum was awesome to watch. When we
got the chance to throw Mani into number 8 next to them, it was frightening. The Ms P Day home game
against Blacktown was a great example. Blacktown were either getting cut down by Luke, run overand
molested for the ball by Puy or crushed front on by Mani. We had precious few chances to get you three
guys together and fresh (and pretty much no chance at training) this year but I hope we can lock it down
next year because I think you three could almost win a comp on your own.
James Tuitama. You’re a machine. One of the best front rowers I’ve played with. F@#k me I don’t ever
want to run at you.
There were a heap of other great performances throughout the year.
In first grade Eddie Hae (other than his disagreement with the Beecroft ref) had a strong year, Salvation
scored a few awesome tries and was always willing to play out of position (and throw the opposition a
beer). Todd “the Aboriginal Rhino” Parsons was always hot and Mike “Slangy” Poto was definitely the
surprise packet of the season. The best last chance defender since Nash was any good.
As far as 1st grades overall performance goes, it was a frustrating one for me as a coach. There is no doubt
in my mind we had the talent to go a long, long way in this comp. But for whatever reason there didn’t
seem to be much of a sense of what we could achieve and as such, most guys were happy to just cruise
through the season without doing much training. As a Subbies coach of a smallish club like ours I think
you’ve got to have the humility to accept when your players just want to play rugby for fun. I accepted
that about half way through this season but it still burns a little that we could’ve done more.
In 2nd grade Jose Frias continues to get better and better. For a fat lazy Phillo he really is quite a handy
rugby player. Drew Hammond had another typical Drew year. Scored plenty of tries but little else. But I
love you for it anyway. Big Willie Wedlock and Mana Arama came down together and were two of 2nd
Grade’s most damaging and consistent players. Jason Fulwood has got to be one of the best
player/presidents in subbies. He is probably the only player/president in subbies.
Any way this has gone on too long so I’ll wrap it up
For those of you unsure, the Wolves will definitely be back in 2016. As a coach I realise I need to offer
more at training. I need to make training useful, exciting and effective. I’ll be working my sloppy ass off in
the off season to make this happens, so we can crush people in 2016!
Lastly, a big thank you to all the committee and off field folk for making this beautiful club what it is.
Peace.

The Helen Fraser Memorial Award
Helen “Mrs P” Fraser embodied the true definition of a Merrylands Rugby Club
stalwart. From her first days at the club supporting her husband Steve Parker,
through to Michael playing when he was just 16, Helen’s commitment has been
unwavering. She could always be relied on to organise or assist in functions,
and was definitely the biggest supporter at all games – taking on the arduous
task of managing scoresheets on the sideline, and also becoming Vice-President.
Sadly taken from us at far too young an age, Helen has left behind a spirit that it
is important for our club to carry into every game.
This award recognizes someone from the club that not only plays on the field,
but contributes to the running of the club and supporting it fully.
The 2015 Helen Fraser Memorial Award goes to Ben Davis.
Ben has worked tirelessly both on and off the field this year. He has performed duties above and beyond
those required of him as a committee member and coach and it is safe to say that the club would not be
here without him. His achievements are particularly impressive when you consider that he and his partner
Jess gave birth to their second child midway through the season.
Ben is a well-deserved recipient of this award, and it reflects his dedication to our club.

COACHES AWARDS
Every year since 1972 a Coaches Award has been presented to the player in each grade whom the coaches
have selected on the basis of their attitude to both playing and training and the effort they have given
throughout the season.
In 1977 one of the founding members of the club passed away and to honour his memory the Clubman
Trophy became the;
PAUL HIDDLESTONE MEMORIAL TROPHY for 1st XV
Paul Hiddlestone was a founding member of the Club who sadly passed away in early
1977.
He was a member of the 1972 team and highly regarded by his peers.
The trophy incorporated both the 1st ands 2nd XV teams for two years until a second
memorial trophy was introduced.

ROBERT REES MEMORIAL TROPHY for 2nd XV
In 1979, another of the Club’s founders, Robert Rees, passed away. Robert Rees was also
highly regarded by his peers and a team mate of Paul Hiddlestone and a member of the
1972 team.
It was decided to honour his memory and incorporated the Rees Trophy as the Coaches Award for the 2nd
XV.
The Robert Rees Memorial Coaches Award was not contested in 1984, 85 & 86 when the club fielded only
one team, however since 1987 it has been presented each year.

OSBORNE and HENDERSON MEMORIAL TROPHIES
The Rodney Osborne Memorial Trophy and the Robert Henderson Memorial Trophies were both
inaugurated during the 1973 football season to perpetuate the memory of two former Merrylands players
who had tragically passed away that year after representing the Club with distinction for many seasons.
Rodney "Ossie" Osborne had progressed through the ranks of Merrylands Juniors before joining the senior
side in 1970. The Rodney Osborne Memorial Trophy is awarded to the First Grade Team.
Bob Henderson joined the Club in the latter stages of its initial year in the Suburban Rugby competition
and later coached the side for several seasons. The Bob Henderson Memorial Trophy is awarded to the
Second grade team.
The Osborne Trophy has been in the Club since its inception when Merrylands had just one team. The
Henderson Trophy, however, was originally awarded by the Apex Batteries Business Houses team for
which Bob had also played. With their demise at the end of 1974 coinciding with the expansion of
Merrylands to two teams the following year, the trophy was incorporated into our Club.
In 1995 the Club was elevated the Fourth Division with a third grade team and the Junior Club presented
us with a Shield to allow a similar award to be made to our lowest grade team. Since 1995 it has been
awarded to the Third Grade team.
These trophies are most definitely not awarded for star performance. Their intention is to honour the
players who strive to give that extra bit, over and above themselves, for the team. One point is awarded in
each game and tallied at the end of the season for the presentation.

CLUBMAN TROPHY
Following a decision of the Members at the 1979 Annual General Meeting, a Clubman of
the Year Trophy was instituted. It was to be an annual award given to the person deemed
by the members to have made the greatest contribution to the effective operation of the
Club during that year.
Selection was to be by a secret ballot of the members at the end of each Rugby season by
nominating on a 3-2-1 basis, the person they felt was most deserving of this award. Votes were then to be
collated by a scrutineer, appointed by the Committee, and the announcement and presentation made at
the Annual Presentation Night.
At an Extra-ordinary General meeting of the Club in early 1994, following the tragic passing of the
Secretary of the Club, Mr Maurie Whittaker. The Clubman Trophy was to be inscribed and dedicated to the
memory of Maurie Whittaker in recognition of his enormous contribution to the Merrylands Club during
his 23 year association.

HUMPHRIES 2015
Drinker of the Year
Being a member of the Merrylands drinking team is probably the most prestigious honour bestowed upon
members of the Merrylands Rugby Club and the honour must not be taken lightly. 2015 has proven quite
hard to determine a winner but after careful consideration the following have being nominated:
President Fulwood: Acts like doing the raffles is a chore but we can all see through that lie.
Nicko Poto: Impressed everyone with his regular, long stints up the Cooli.
Coach Kev: A giant among men.
Ricky Lee Martin: Not content with having the greatest name of any player to ever play for the Wolves,
Ricky did his best Nash impersonation and turned up blind drunk and managed to get himself in the run on
team.
After another impressive year at the Coolibah, this year’s winner is:
Tim French: Yet again another stellar performance from Frenchie. Tim often tried to protest that he wasn’t
a Cooli regular and that he often goes out to other places. But regular facebook posts of Tim enjoying
drinks with President Jase, Micky P and others, plus he’s affection for wheelchair accessable toilets,
showed Tim for what he really is. A classic Cooli gambling, drunken degenerate. And somehow sexy.
Guts of the Year
This award is keenly contested with new contestants attempting to get the judges vote by the natural
growth in their girth. Nominations in this year’s race included:
James Macklin: One too many salmons for this polar bear
Michael Parker: Believe it or not, there is actually a rather substantial stomach hiding behind those saggy
tits of his.
This year wasn’t easy, but in a closely run race the winner is:
Mike Oz Manu Zalinski: Strictly speaking Mike is officially a Parra Two Blues player. But he did come down
to most of preseason training and those big, lushes tits where something to behold.
Supporter of the Year
The Ditfort Family: Although Irene, John and his lovely girlfriend show very little, if any, actual interest in
the games, they’re there every week. Thanks a million.
Father of the year
Congratulations to all those who have added to the Merrylands family. In such a difficult decision that a
winner could not be separated, the joint winners are:
Ben and Jess who welcomed their second daughter Georgina.
Levi and Kylee who became the proud parents of their sixth son Trent.
Matthew and Melissa who gave birth to their first son Logan.
Congratulations must also be extended to Micky P and JoJo who are expecting the arrival of their second
child.
Injury of the Year
Tanga Wakeford: Hurt his “groin” on Miss P Day and never returned to the playing field, despite coming to
training and playing touch seemingly pain free.
Salvation Taatia: Loves VJ and the way he plays so much that he got himself exactly the same injury, one
week after VJ got it, but much much worse.
Puy Aukusitino: In his first game for the Wolves, cut his forehead open and needed stitches. Came back a
few weeks later and busted his ankle. Still went on to be one of the Wolves’ best players.
Trainer of the Year
Todd Parsons: Came down to two training sessions before openly proclaiming “f#ck this” and never being
seen at training again until it was time to organise the End of Season trip.
Mysteries
Rey Akbar: Is he too afraid to face the world without Simon by his side or did he get beaten up after
offending one too many people with shit Facebook posts.
Sticky: Hassled and hassled to get picked in 1st grade. He gets a start 5 rounds in against Mac Uni, the
Wolves win, and he is never seen again. Job done, I guess.
Ricky Lee Martin: Everyone thought he was the new Nash Steward. Booze hard and play hard. But he
ended up just vanishing.
James Macklin: Cleaning, tandem bike riding, holidays to Melbourne… How many mistakes can one dorky
polar bear make?
Nash Steward: Gone for good?
Levi Sciascia: Why is he so hungry?
Salvation Taatia: If he really wanted to buy Beecroft a beer, he could have just handed it to them.
