PREREQUISITES:
CMPE 150, CE 241
COURSE DESCRIPTION (2002 CATALOG):
Stress and strain. Selected topics in torsion. Simple bending of beams,
shearing stresses in beams; beam deflections. Combined stress due to
bending, torsion, shear and axial load. Mohr circle. Design of beams and
shafts for strength. Statically indeterminate problems. Introduction to
energy methods. Buckling of columns.
OBJECTIVES:
(a) Understand the concepts of stress at a point and strain at a point.
(b) Understand the concept of constitutive modeling.
(c) Analyze/understand simple solid mechanics problems.
(d) Identify the fundamental elements involved in the mechanical design/analysis of engineering
structures.

TOPICS:
1. Review of statics (1 hour)
2. Stress and strain (4 hours)
3. Axially loaded members (4 hours)
4. Torsion (5 hours)
5. Internal forces in beams (2 hours)
6. Stresses in beams (8 hours)

HOMEWORK :
Homework problems will be posted on this page. Solutions will be available on
reserve in the BU library.
Homework assignments will not be graded, but quizzes will be closely related to
the homework.
TESTS :
All tests are closed-book and without cheat-sheets.
Quizzes may or may not be announced.
No make-up quizzes will be given. For a missed quiz, the grade is zero,
independently of the reason. Two lowest grades for the quizzes will be dropped.
Make-up exams will be given only for properly documented medical excuses.
Only neatly written problems will be graded. A correct answer without a correct
outline of the work will not carry any grade.
EXAM DATES :
Will be announced on this page.
GRADING:
Quizzes - 30%, Exam I - 20%, Exam II - 20%, Final - 30%
AA: 81-100
BA: 76-80
BB: 71-75
CB: 66-70
CC: 61-65
DC: 56-60
DD: 50-55
F: below 50
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY :
You should work the homeworks individually, although you may consult with me or
other members of the class if questions arise. Checking answers is permitted,
copying other's solutions or code is not permitted. Scholastic dishonesty will
not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.
ABET PROGRAM OUTCOMES ACHIEVED:
1. Knowledge of linear algebra and chemistry, depth in physics, advanced calculus, differential
equations and engineering sciences along with the ability to apply these toward solutions of
elementary mechanical engineering problems.
2. Ability to formulate and solve open-ended problems.
ABET PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
The Mechanical Engineering Department at Boğaziçi University aims at graduating BS students
who
1. have mastered the fundamental notions and principles of mechanical engineering discipline.
2. are able to independently learn various applications, examine, critically evaluate and find
solutions.
ASSESSMENT METHODS :
The course and instructor will be evaluated at the end of the semester using the BU
approved form. ABET Program Outcomes and Objectives will be evaluated by the students as well
as the instructor.
