Labor Day: Monday September 2, 2013 - How it Came About; What it Means
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic
achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength,
prosperity, and well-being of our country.
Rosie: By Any Other Name - The Riveting True Story of the Labor Icon
Certainly, one of the more readily recognizable icons of labor is "Rosie the Riveter," the indefatigable World War II-era woman
who rolled up her sleeves, flexed her arm muscles and said, "We Can Do It!" But, this isn't the original Rosie.
In 1942, as World War II raged in Europe and the Pacific and the song "Rosie the Riveter" filled radio waves across the home
front, manufacturing giant Westinghouse commissioned artist J. Howard Miller to make a series of posters to promote the war
effort. One such poster featured the image of a woman with her hair wrapped up in a red polka-dot scarf, rolling up her sleeve and
flexing her bicep. At the top of the poster, the words ‘We Can Do It!' are printed in a blue caption bubble. To many people, this
image is "the" Rosie the Riveter. But it was never the intention to make this image "Rosie," nor did many Americans think of her as
"Rosie." The connection of Miller's image and "Rosie" is a recent phenomenon.
The "Rosie" image popular during the war was created by illustrator Norman Rockwell (who had most certainly heard the "Rosie
the Riveter" song) for the cover of the Saturday Evening Post on May 29, 1943 — the Memorial Day issue. The image depicts a
muscular woman wearing overalls, goggles and pins of honor on her lapel. She sports a leather wrist band and rolled-up sleeves.
She sits with a riveting tool in her lap, eating a sandwich, and "Rosie" is inscribed on her lunch pail. And, she's stepping on a copy
of Adolph Hitler's book "Mein Kampf."
The magazine cover exemplified the American can-do spirit and illustrated the notion of women working in previously maledominated manufacturing jobs, an ever-growing reality, to help the United States fight the war while the men fought over seas.
The cover was an enormous success and soon stories about real life "Rosies" began appearing in newspapers across the
country. The government took advantage of the popularity of Rosie the Riveter and embarked on a recruiting campaign of the
same name. The campaign brought millions of women out of the home and into the workforce. To this day, Rosie the Riveter is
still considered the most successful government advertising campaign in history.

After the war, numerous requests were made for the Saturday Evening Post image of Rosie the Riveter, but Curtis Publishing, the
owner of the Post, refused all requests. The publishing company was possibly concerned that the composers of the song "Rosie
the Riveter" would hold them liable for copyright infringement.
Since then, the J. Howard Miller "We Can Do It!" image has replaced Norman Rockwell's illustration as "Rosie the Riveter" in the
minds of many people. Miller's Rosie has been imprinted on coffee mugs, mouse pads, and countless other items, making her and
not the original "Rosie" the most famous of all labor icons.
2. DOT opens online dialogue on our next Strategic Plan
FAST LANE: The Official Blog of the U.S. Secretary of Transportation – August 27, 2013
http://www.dot.gov/fastlane/dot-opens-online-dialogue-updated-strategic-plan
Posted by Anthony Foxx
The U.S. Department of Transportation has been working on our strategic plan for FY 2014 to FY 2018 since early this spring.
Developing and implementing our strategic plan is an important step in helping the Department address key priorities that
represent the diverse interests of our stakeholders across the country.
Transportation is an engine for growing our economy and creating American jobs. Every day, people and businesses rely on a
multi-modal transportation system to travel and to move goods to consumers at home and abroad. We know that wherever we
invest in transportation infrastructure, opportunities for countless Americans follow. So we want to ensure that our strategic plan
serves as a foundation for building, operating, and maintaining a safe and efficient transportation system.
We also want to ensure that all of our stakeholders have an opportunity to read the plan and weigh in. And that means you.
For the next few weeks, you can review the plan and submit your ideas and comments at the DOT Strategic Plan Online Dialogue
(http://dotstrategicplan.ideascale.com/). The dialogue also provides an opportunity to read and respond to what others are saying
about the plan. Your participation will help us shape the future of transportation in America.
I appreciate any time you can offer to provide this important feedback, and I encourage you to give the Online Dialogue site a visit.
If you prefer, you can also email your comments directly to DOTstratplan@dot.gov.
Thank you!
Anthony Foxx is the 17th U.S. Secretary of Transportation.

The following “Topics” of particular Maritime applicability have been provided as excerpted for our readers.

Maritime (PDF Page 50 of 100 …Numbered as Page 44)
Ports serve as gateways for the import and export of goods in the global economy. Just as DOT is the steward for ensuring that
the interstate highway system is in a state of good repair, DOT has a role in ensuring that access into and out of our ports and
marine facilities can meet both our security needs and the needs of the economy.
There are 400 ports owned and operated by State and local governments, private corporations, or a combination of those entities
in the U.S. Historically, our role in financing port infrastructure has been limited. Through federal investments in port infrastructure
using Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grants and America’s Marine Highway Program, we
incentivize improvements in operations, facilities, and equipment that will make our Nations’ ports more efficient and productive.
The maritime system is a shared responsibility. Federal, State, local, and private sector entities provide input to the condition and
operation of existing facilities. To remain competitive in a global economy, the maritime network will require both technical
assistance and incentives to improve efficiency and maximize the use of existing facilities—and the associated costs are not
insignificant. For example, U.S. public ports spent nearly $9 billion on capital improvement projects from 2004 to 2008.
Additional public investment is needed. By one estimate, the costs attributed to delays in the nation’s inland waterways system
were $33 billion in 2010, and it is expected to increase to nearly $49 billion by 2020. The American Society of Civil Engineers
estimates that an additional, cumulative investment in ports and waterways of $15.8 billion between 2012 and 2020 would protect
a total of $697 billion in GDP during that period and, as of 2020, 738,000 jobs.
The U.S. will need sufficient maritime port capacity to meet the requirements of current and projected import and export trade.
Transportation planners must be prepared to respond to changing trade patterns necessitated by the widening of the Panama
Canal and the potential for the development of an Arctic transportation corridor, which could accommodate cargoes between the
Far East to the U.S. East Coast.
Commercial and government access to privately-owned U.S.-flag commercial ships serving international markets is augmented
through the Maritime Security Program (MSP). MSP provides an annual stipend payment to 60 modern and efficient U.S.-flag
vessels that also participate in the U.S. Voluntary Intermodal Sealift Agreement (VISA) program. The VISA program provides for a
time-phased activation of state-of-the-art commercial intermodal equipment to coincide with DOD requirements while minimizing
disruption to U.S. commercial operations. The MSP and VISA programs help to ensure that the United States will have U.S.-flag
commercial companies, vessels, and crews operating in U.S. foreign trade, along with the intermodal assets of the companies—
providing reliable and efficient commercial and military access to critical foreign markets in the event of disruptions to global
supply chains.

STRATEGIES FOR NATIONAL SECURITY
DOT has responsibility for a number of modal emergency preparedness programs that provide the DOD and civilian agencies with
assured access to commercial transportation during times of national emergency. One of our competencies is to maintain reserve
sealift capacity in support of national defense. We maintain government-owned ships in the Ready Reserve Force (RRF), which is
a part of the National Defense Reserve Force (NDRF). The RRF is comprised of 46 vessels that provide surge sealift capacity for
DOD deployments and other emergencies. These RRF vessels are operated and maintained according to strict DOD readiness
timelines, employing the expertise of commercial ship management companies and civilian crews to be mission ready within five
days of activation. In response to Superstorm Sandy in late 2012, MARAD activated one RRF vessel and two NDRF training
vessels to provide berthing and meals to for Federal-relief workers in the New York City area.
Our strategies for ensuring defense mobility include:
* Maintain government-owned transportation assets, and provide access to commercial transportation assets for critical support
for defense mobility and emergency response;
* Maintain steadfast defense readiness across all operating administrations in their respective national security responsibilities
through interagency cooperation and drills with the DOD, DHS and other Federal, State, and local agencies.

8. WWII Veterans Participate in 50th Honor Flight Chicago
Honor Flight Chicago Web site: http://www.honorflightchicago.org/
The 50th Flight of Honor Flight Chicago took place on August 7, 2013. Honor Flight Chicago was founded to recognize our
Veterans – most specifically our WWII Veterans – with a day of honor, remembrance and celebration from a proud and grateful
nation. 700+ Guardians and Volunteers work tirelessly year round to not only raise money for these flights, but also to provide
Veteran outreach, community and school education, and public relations support. Without their dedication and commitment, we
would not be able to deliver on the promise of Honor Flight Chicago.
http://www.honorflightchicago.org/
50th Flight of Honor Flight Chicago at the WWII Memorial, Washington, D.C.
Among the 92 honorees selected was John Peterlin Jr., father of Captain John Peterlin III (KP ’76). John states, “My Dad will turn
87 years old this December. I am really pleased beyond measure that he is going to be able to experience this. He was in the
U.S. Army Air Corps stationed at Clark Air Base on Luzon in the Philippines at the end of World War II. He went over and came
back on troop ships. I believe there is a photo of one of his troop ships hanging in the hallway over at MITAGS.”
The organization states,
“The day with Honor Flight Chicago will be a long and emotional yet exhilarating one. To prepare yourself be sure to get lots of
rest and plenty of nourishment, especially fluids, during the days leading up to your flight.
Flight day itineraries vary, but here is an idea of a “typical” flight day:
You’ll arrive at Midway Airport for check in at approximately 4:30am. This early arrival allows time for checking in, meeting up with
your guardian for the day, processing through TSA security and enjoying a light breakfast at the gate before boarding the flight to
Washington D.C. At the airport we will climb aboard our deluxe motor coaches and head toward our first stop.
Ref: USMMA KPA-CPA News 090213
The highlight of every trip is a visit to the World War II Memorial where you will have ample time to marvel at the beauty and
symbolism, explore the site and simply sit and remember those who were left behind. There are endless opportunities to take
pictures to remind you of the visit to your memorial.
There are a number of locations around the Washington area we would like to visit, but we must limit the number we can go to.
These vary from trip to trip, but may include some of the following: Air and Space Museum at Chantilly, VA (where the Enola Gay
and other WWII aircraft can be seen), Iwo Jima Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, Fort Myer, Lincoln Memorial, or the
Korean and Vietnam Memorials. After visiting the memorials, we will head to the airport for our flight home.”
The youngest sister of Captain John Peterlin III (KP ’76), Josette (Peterlin) Szalko, lives with her husband and son in the Chicago
area near their parents. Josette states, “During the flight home, there will be a surprise Mail Call for the veterans. Each will
receive a package of letter and cards from people thanking them for their service. Many of these will be from people the veterans
do not know. I am gathering some notes and bring them to the airport on Wednesday when I drop off Dad. It would be nice for
Dad to have some notes from his loved ones.”
The USMMA KP Alumni – Chapter Presidents Alliance, Inc. was pleased to provide such a letter of congratulations to honoree
John Peterlin, Jr., on behalf of all our KP Alumni! We appreciate the thoughtful note that we received in turn.
John Peterlin, Jr., Veteran, U.S. Army Air Corps, WWII
The American veteran is one of our greatest treasures... those men and women who answered our nation's call, especially at
times of our greatest need. The mission of Honor Flight Chicago is to honor and thank those veterans - especially now our
WWII veterans, by bringing them to Washington DC, at no cost to them, for a day of honor.
Would you like to assist join Honor Flight Chicago as they treat these humble, unassuming men and women to a most
extraordinary day? Volunteer to help with the flight logistics or become a guardian to safeguard our vets on their flight day. The
cost is roughly $500 per veteran to go to Washington. Donate with your time or resources to help send as many vets as possible.
There are an estimated 21,000 WWII veterans in the Chicagoland area - Honor Flight Chicago would like to reach every one.

“It is an extreme honor to be the recipient of the 2013 Katherine Ley Award,” Petersen Lubow said. “The previous winners of this

better and bad times easier to bear.
Peterson Lubow has served as the Head of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics at the United State Merchant
Marine Academy for 25 years. Upon her appointment in July, 1990, she became the first female to hold the position of Director of
Athletics at any of the United States Federal Academies. in 1979, she became the first female head coach of a men’s varsity team

men’s and women’s NCAA Division III individual National Champion.
“Sue is a role model for both men and women in athletics,” said United States Merchant Marine Academy Assistant Athletic

For the second consecutive year the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy soccer team ran a youth soccer skills clinic for the Long
Beach Soccer Club. The team administered drills, gave instruction and played games with a number of young players at Veterans
Memorial Field at Long Beach Middle School. The players ranged from ages 6-12 and were taught about proper sportsmanship
as well as soccer fundamentals.
"It is great to see the youngsters learn more about the game and having fun while doing it, but our guys also gain a lot from the
experience," said USMMA Head Soccer Coach Michael Smolens. "It is terrific that our players get to share their knowledge of the
game with the kids, and they truly enjoyed the interactions during the clinic."
The Long Beach Soccer Club strives to provide developmental and competitive soccer for community children ages 4-19 in a safe
and nurturing environment. Over the last two years, USMMA's relationship with the Long Beach Soccer Club has been mutually
beneficial.

"When coaching youth sports, our goal is that the players apply the lessons and skills we teach beyond the playing field," said
Mary Conway of the Long Beach Soccer Club. "Having the young men from the Merchant Marine Academy come down not only
gave our children some great lessons on soccer, but also some great role models to look up to."
The USMMA soccer team opens the season this weekend at the Union Soccer Classic where they will square-off with the host
Dutchmen as well as Rensselaer.

Kings Point, NY – Junior Michelle Danhof's (San Antonio, TX) 11 service aces are now third most in Academy history in a single
match as the Mariners rattled off 18 total aces in a 3-1 triumph over Wentworth Friday night in the 2013 Kings Point Invitational.
Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) also had a huge night for USMMA as she paced the team with 18 kills and eight digs. The result
also gives new Mariner Head Coach Iain Bradbury his first collegiate victory.
Merchant Marine (1-0) got off to a blistering start behind a raucous crowd of over 200 Midshipmen as four Danhof service aces
quickly made it 7-1. The visitors battled back to cut the deficit to 13-12 before back-to-back kills from Jennifer Perkins (North
Attleboro, MA) reestablished a cushion for the Mariners. USMMA claimed five of the last six points in the set and a block from
Charlene Swick (Incline Village, NV) and Jordy Macbeth gave Merchant Marine the first set of 2013, 25-18.
Wentworth (0-1) earned a 7-3 advantage early in the second set but the Mariners chipped away until they took six straight points
on the serve of Danhof to gain a 19-16 edge. The home side again was superior down the stretch and went up 2-0 with a 25-20
decision. Macbeth registered four blocks in her first collegiate match as the Mariners six blocks as a team matched its highest
total from last season.

The Leopards refused to go quietly and a 5-1 spurt in the middle of the third game would ultimately be the difference in a 25-21
victory for the visitors. Wentworth was led by the double-double performance, 13 kills and 14 digs, from Hannah Bailey.
However, the Leopards only swung at a .129 clip for the match and registered just 32 total kills compared to 48 kills for Merchant
Marine.
USMMA blew open what was a tightly contested fourth set by engineering a 9-2 run that included three Danhof service aces and
three Palma kills. Perkins had the duty of sending the final point to the floor with one of her six kills of the match ending the set,
25-20, and the match 3-1.
The Mariners return to action tomorrow with matches at 10:00 am and 4:00 pm against CCNY and Farmingdale State to close out
the 2013 Kings Point Invitational. Merchant Marine will be attempting to win its own tournament for a second straight year.

Kings Point, NY – The USMMA volleyball team completed a perfect opening weekend of the 2013 season, claiming their own
tournament for the second straight year, with 3-0 victories over CCNY and Farmingdale St. Saturday inside O'Hara Hall.
Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) was named Tournament MVP after recording double-digit kills in every match. Freshman Jordy
Macbeth (Orlando, FL) also secured a spot on the All-Tournament Team after hitting .438 and posting eight blocks on the
weekend.
Merchant Marine (3-0) opened day two of the tournament with a 3-0 sweep of CCNY in which the Mariners dominated at the net.
USMMA recorded 11 blocks in the match with junior Jennifer Perkins (North Attleboro, MA) earning seven total blocks, one solo
and six assists. The Mariners dropped in nine service aces in the opening game, including three from Perkins, en route to a 25-19
win.
CCNY (1-2) claimed four straight points late in the middle set to grab a 23-19 and burn the Mariners' final timeout. The Beavers
had a pair of set points at 24-22 following a USMMA attack error. However, Merchant Marine responded with back-to-back points
on kills from Michelle Danhof (San Antonio, TX) and Palma to level the score line at 24-24. Danhof gave USMMA set point with a
service ace and Palma hammered home one of her match high 11 kills to end the set, 26-24, and put the home team up 2-0
overall.
The Mariners ran away with the third set, opening up a comfortable 12-3 cushion and eventually cruised to a 25-16 victory that
secured the 3-0 sweep. Perkins supplied four kills and four blocks in the final frame as the Mariners hit at a .192 clip. Riley
Huelbig (Poolesville, MD) dished out 14 assists in the match while Paige Queen (Falcon, CO) added 10 helpers of her own.
Merchant Marine wrapped up the weekend with its best hitting performance of the tournament, notching 46 kills against
Farmingdale State. The Mariners got five kills in the opening set from Charlene Swick (Incline Village, NV) as USMMA netted 17
kills along with a .250 hitting mark. Macbeth supplied the final kill on one of Huelbig's 32 assists to give the home team the 25-20
victory.

Farmingdale State appeared to be in control of the second set and held a 21-17 advantage before USMMA Head Coach Iain
Bradbury called for a timeout. The first year head coach's team responded by winning five straight points as well as taking the
momentum. Macbeth again came up huge late as she powered down another set point to end the frame, 28-26. Macbeth totaled
eight kills and did not make an error in the match, good for a superb .667 hitting percentage.
The Mariners engineered a 9-3 run midway through the final set to take a commanding 19-12 lead. Palma would fittingly end the
tournament with one of her 14 kills of the contest to claim the set, 25-17, and the match 3-0. A pair of freshman anchored the
USMMA defense as Darin Zacharias (Virginia Beach, VA) posted a match high 12 digs and Amanda See (Waukesha, WI) chipped
in seven digs of her own.
The USMMA volleyball team returns to action Wednesday night as they travel to Manhattanville to take on the Valiants at 7:00 pm.

An abundance of mid-field play was the theme of the game as both teams shook off the dust of a long offseason. The first half
ended with the Engineers leading 1-0.
RPI was quick to strike in the second half as well as senior defenseman Ian Halter registered his first goal of the season. Halter
buried a header past senior goaltender Gary Poulin. Junior midfielder Matt Koizol, one of Engineers' captains and the leading
scorer from a year ago, registered his first point of the season with the pass to Halter off a free kick.
USMMA sophomore forward Dan Weldon received a yellow card after an incident at the 88-minute mark.
RPI goalkeeper Rob Dewald made the lone save of the night off a quick shot by Mariner's senior midfielder Kevin Pfeil.

Schenectady, NY - The USMMA men's soccer game dropped a 2-1 decision to Union Saturday afternoon at the Union College
Soccer Classic. Freshman Tim Hughes (Ballston Lake, NY) registered the first goal of his collegiate career and of the Mariners
season in the 90th minute. Classmate Brennan Becker (Weston, FL) earned an assist on the tally but the Mariners were unable to
complete a late comeback.
"We have a lot of different guys in different roles for us this season," said Head Coach Michael Smolens. "However, while we
obviously didn't want to start 0-2 this year we learned a lot about our team. We learned those things and will get better because of
the quality competition we played this weekend."
Union (2-0-0) opened the scoring just 1:45 before halftime as Kevin Janson converted on a penalty kick, finding the lower right
corner of the net. The Dutchmen made it a 2-0 affair just under five minutes into the second half as Daniel Miller's strike from just
outside the 18-yard box also found the back of the net.
Merchant Marine (0-2-0) scored with 37 seconds remaining in regulation as Hughes struck a header through traffic for USMMA's
first marker of the 2013 campaign. The Mariners outshot the home team in the second half but dropped its second straight
contest.
The USMMA soccer team will look to bounce back Wednesday night as they take on Rutgers-Newark on the road at 7:00 pm.

WTS Congratulates Feinberg on Chief of Staff Role at USDOT
U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has announced that Sarah Feinberg will be joining the U.S. Department of
Transportation as his Chief of Staff.
“WTS International would like to congratulate Ms. Feinberg on her new post at the DOT. Secretary Foxx’s selection of a woman
for an executive role illustrates his commitment to an administration led by a gender-diverse team,” said Marcia Ferranto, WTS
President and CEO.
WTS, the association whose mission is to build the future of transportation through the global advancement of women, has
historically had great support from the USDOT for its programs. In May of 2010, former DOT Secretary Ray Lahood signed a
memorandum of understanding with WTS to establish the Transportation YOU program that has already proliferated across the
U.S. with local programming aimed at generating awareness among 13 – 18 year-old girls about the depth and breadth of
transportation career opportunities.

The appointment of Feinberg to the Chief of Staff post—in addition to the appointment of Beth Osborne as Acting Assistant
Secretary for Transportation Policy—are steps that further the WTS mission. “WTS looks forward to continuing our work to attract,
retain, and advance women in transportation with Secretary Foxx’s team,” Ferranto added.
According to Secretary Foxx’s announcement, Feinberg served in the Obama Administration as a Special Assistant to the

This page will answer questions about Parents Weekend, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Friday,
September 6 to Sunday, September 8, 2013. Please check this page frequently for any new updates before finalizing your travel
plans.
What is Parents Weekend?
Parents Weekend is a celebration that incorporates the USMMA’s Acceptance Day Ceremony with a weekend schedule that
includes a formal parade, sports events, classroom visitations and more. This weekend is the first opportunity for parents to
reunite with their plebe candidate since the first day of Indoctrination on July 2. Parents are traditionally surprised to see the
changes in their son or daughter made in a few short weeks. These young mariners and future leaders have made tremendous
growth in pride, determination, initiative, and maturity as they learn about leadership. These qualities are their admission ticket to
the Regiment of Midshipmen.
As the last weekend of plebe indoctrination comes to its traditional close with Acceptance Day, the candidates will formally join the
Regiment of Midshipmen and will be sworn into the U.S. Navy Reserve. They also drop the "candidates" label and will be known
as plebes until they are recognized as midshipmen on Recognition Day.
Is there a schedule or itinerary for the weekend?
Please keep in mind the Parents Weekend schedule is subject to change. Check here for the most updated information before
you plan your trip.
The Parents Weekend schedule can be found by clicking here.

When should I arrive?
Parents, family and other guests usually arrive on Friday or Saturday from 0700 to 1300, as their schedule permits.
What do we do upon arrival?
When you arrive at Vickery Gate, you will be directed to Land Hall. On Friday, from 0730 to 1300 and Saturday, from 0800 to
1130, you can pick up your pre-paid meal tickets, campus map and Parents Weekend schedule and have your questions
answered at the Land Hall Information Table.
Is it customary to bring siblings or other family members?
Many families choose to bring the entire family for the weekend. All are welcome.
Can our plebe stay with us over the weekend?

The Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR), a member of the YCF Group of companies and exclusive
administrator of the world’s largest quality ship register, has appointed Christian Mollitor to the position of vice-president.
This newly created role represents a return to LISCR for Mollitor. Having formerly held the position of Assistant Department Head
of Seafarer Certification & Documentation, he left the registry in 2001 to further develop his career. This included practicing law in
Alaska and carrying out maritime and environmental regulatory compliance roles at Royal Caribbean International and Holland
America Line.
During that time, he served as the NorthWest Cruiseship Association’s representative to Washington State’s ballast water policy
work group and as co-director of the joint US Coast Guard/Holland America Line cruise ship mass rescue operation exercise held
in Ketchikan, Alaska.
Mollitor, a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy and Tulane University Law School, also recently earned his
Master of Business Administration from Western Washington University. He is a member of the Alaska Bar and the Maritime Law
Association of the United States.
In his new role, Christian Mollitor will augment the registry leadership team’s marketing and business development efforts,
oversee head office support of the global network of regional offices, and manage special projects. He says, “I am pleased to have
the opportunity to return to LISCR. The last twelve years of my career have given me a greater perspective of the needs of the
shipping industry and a specific view of how the premier maritime administrator, LISCR, can best provide regulatory compliance
services.”

Scott Bergeron, CEO, says, “We are delighted to have been able to recruit Christian back to the registry. His experience and
academic achievements will serve us well as the registry continues its global expansion. It is always deeply satisfying to have
great employees return to the company after further developing their credentials.”

34. USMMA Cadets Corps Dedication ceremony planned in Pass Christian, MS. October 12, 2013
On Saturday, Oct 12th, 2013 we have a special Dedication ceremony planned in Pass Christian, MS. In 1979 our chapter, with the
assistance of the USN Seabees from Gulfport, MS. erected a memorial to the USMMA Cadets Corps which was located in Pass
Christian, MS. at Henderson Point. As you well know, this was one of the two facilities used as KP before the government bought
the Chrysler Estate. Many who passed through those gates were part of the 142 and the memorial is dedicated to those who died
as cadets from Pass Christian and Sam Mateo. In 1950 the campus was finally shut down and sold to the Mississippi Baptist
Convention Board. Numerous hurricanes and finally Katrina destroyed all remnants of the buildings. However, because the
Seabees installed the Memorial which consisted of an old ketch sailing anchor (donated by the Seabees) and plaque, they
remained in place.
USMM Cadet Corps Basic School Memorial, located in Pass Christian, MS. at Henderson Point. Original Dedication Plaque & Anchor, and Visitor Center which
was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
The Mississippi Baptist Convention Board (MBCB) removed these items for safe keeping. Fast forward to July of this year and
our chapter was notified that a couple in Bay St Louis, MS was working with the MBCB to try and restore the memorial. Mr. John
Ohman and his wife Katharine, who have no relationship with KP, reached out to us for help. John is a retired C/Eng with Lykes
and ABS. He knew and sailed with many KP grads and his dedication to the project should be commended.

Original Dedication Plaque
We met with John, the MBCB and have submitted plans to the MDOT to recreate this memorial and it was approved The MBCB
handed me the original bronze plaque and we immediately sent it to be refurbished by the father-in-law of
Kevin Stith '96 who is a professional in this field. The anchor is located in West, MS, a four hour drive from the coast and is being
retrieved for restoration as well. The USN Seabees have agreed to help us again in setting and mounting this memorial. So at
1000 hours on Oct 12, 2013 we will rededicate the USMMA Pass Christian cadet Corps Memorial to the men who lost their lives at
sea s cadets in WWII. The Admiral and Acting Maritime Administrator will be on hand along with six midshipmen traveling thanks
to the great gift of the class of 1962. Reception to follow. The Memorial will be in Henderson Point Park which is 0.6 miles NNE of
the original campus. Henderson Point is still demolished from Katrina and we wanted the memorial to be in a location where
people will actually see it.

Our chapter has no greater mission than this project. Many need to be thanked and will be. This is our history and legacy and we
shall never forget the sacrifices made by these young men in time of war. Think about it, how many would volunteer to go to KP
knowing when they set sail a U-Boat could and would sink them. Yet, many not only were sunk and survived; they went back
again and were sunk again. Their story, bravery and dedication must never be allowed to fade. These brave men set the course
and bar for the rest of us. We are extremely proud to restore and dedicate what this chapter created in 1979.

History and Photos of Merchant Marine Cadet Corps Life in the 1940's
Attribution: American Merchant Marine at War, www.usmm.org
The Merchant Marine Act of 1936 directed that the merchant marine be "manned with a trained and efficient citizen personnel,"
but did not specify any structure for the Maritime Commission to follow. The Bland amendment of June 1938, created the United
States Maritime Service for "training of licensed and unlicensed merchant marine personnel." The Maritime Commission's first
report to Congress in January 1939 recommended establishment of a federal cadet system, and pointed out the need for officers
with gunnery skills in case of war. In July 1942 control over the Cadet Corps was transferred from the Coast Guard to the War
Shipping Administration.
Richard McNulty, who for years had preached the need for a formal training organization, became the first Supervisor of Cadet
Training, a position he held for 12 years. McNulty and a staff of four worked out a curriculum and in September 1939 appointed 3
"Port Inspector-Instructors" in New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans for 325 cadets.
The Maritime Commission made selection to the Cadet program based on a National Competitive Examination, the first held on
April 17, 1939. Of the 450 applicants, 166 passed the exam. Cadets were assigned to ships, whose Masters were responsible for
supervising their work. Ashore, Port Inspector-Instructors supervised the training program which included an exam at the end of
each sea year.
The need for a permanent shore facility became obvious quickly. After several years of temporary facilities, Congress
appropriated funds in 1942 for the purchase of the former Chrysler estate for an Academy at Kings Point, Long Island, New York.
At the same time the Merchant Marine Cadet Schools were established at Pass Christian, Mississippi, and San Mateo, California.
Gulf Coast Cadet Corps
The Gulf Coast Cadet Corps found its first home in June 1940 at the Coast Guard Air Station in Biloxi, Mississippi. By winter they
moved to the commandant's old house at the Algiers Navy Yard. Evicted again, the District Cadet Training Instructor bought the
North Star, a 120-foot houseboat, and leased land along Bayou St. John. Old Civilian Conservation Corps buildings were
reassembled on the site.
During a cruise, the North Star took shelter from a storm at the Inn-by-the-Sea resort in Pass Christian. An officer learned the
hotel owners were willing to sell to the government and the deal was approved on August 29, 1942. The North Star was used to
move the cadets to their new home in mid-September 1942. The training vessels at Pass Christian were: North Star (renamed
Robert Waterman), Oneida, Alfred Haag (renamed John Land), Samuel Samuels (renamed Joshua Humphreys) and a submarine
chaser renamed Ensign Strom.
The cadets at San Mateo were transferred to Kings Point in September 1947, and the school closed, becoming a junior college,
and later, a nature preserve. Pass Christian Cadet School, already suffering severe financial problems, was devastated by a
hurricane in September 1947. The School closed in 1950, the facilities turned into a religious college, then a resort.
