INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
This manual has been prepared so as to provide guidance to the user in so far as
what maintenance should be carried out to various pieces of equipment.
It is the responsibility of the ship board safety officer to ensure that as a minimum
requirement, equipment checks are carried out in accordance with guidance in this
manual ( Safety officer manual). The results of these checks shall be recorded on the
planned maintenance record issued by the office.
Any deficiencies or requirements shall be reported to the Master, so the relevant
requisition can be raised to rectify the deficiency, or order placed to replace the item.
The safety officer may delegate the task of maintenance and checking of the
equipment to another responsible person on board, however he must satisfy himself
that the checks are being carried out correctly, before signing off the planned
maintenance record sheet.
Sections 1 – 8 are some guidance notes on the type of checks required to be carried
out on the equipment and a section for recording numbers and locations.
Sections 9 – 11 you will note that those pieces of equipment which duplicate between
both crew medical and survivors medical have been highlighted.
These checks must be maintained under the conditions of the ISM Code, which
became mandatory for all vessels 2002. Evidence that this is being done needs to be
recorded and available for inspection by an ISM auditor.
As part of our own internal auditing system, we will continue to include the LSA
equipment and medical checks as an area to audit.
