Facing the Past On-line Educator Support
Welcome to the Facing the Past's on-line educator support website.
This website has been designed to support the teachers participating in the Facing the Past
project. On this site you will find a suggested course outline for teaching Nazi Germany and
the Holocaust and apartheid South Africa in Grade 9. This page will give you access to
suggested lesson plans and resources that you can use in the classroom. This website will also
keep you informed about what is happening in the Facing the Past project.

We have recently up-dated the course outline .
We have suggested a course that should allow you to complete both the study of
Nazi Germany and the Holocaust as well as apartheid South Africa in six

 Herzlia Middle School have produced an Assessment Guide for Life Skills in
Life Orientation. They have kindly agreed to share this resource with Facing
the Past teachers...more
 We have decided on the dates for the three follow-up workshops that will be
taking place this year...more

Facing History and Ourselves (our American partner) has recently hosted an
on-line forum discussion for learners from all over the world including
Rwanda, the Czech Republic, USA, UK, Ireland, Germany and
Colombia....more

We have added some new topics on the forum discussion page so that
teachers can keep talking to each other...more

The course outline on the site has been created around the syllabus for Social
Sciences (History). This means that History teachers can follow the outline as it
appears and adapt the lessons where they see fit...more
The partners in Facing the Past
The Cape Town Holocaust Centre, established in 1999, is an education institution
dedicated to teaching the historical, moral and ethical dimensions of the Holocaust.
The Centre houses a permanent exhibition and conducts education programmes and
seminars for high school learners (Grades 9-12), students from tertiary institutions,
professional educators and for a wide variety of groups from the civil service and the

Facing History and Ourselves (Boston, USA) is an international education and teacher
training organisation whose mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in
an examination of racism, prejudice and antisemitism in order to promote the
development of a more humane and informed citizenry. The organisation has
developed numerous resources for educators to use in the classrooms, many of
which are available at www.facinghistory.org. South African educators are able to be
in touch with educators around the world through the website.
Facing the Past is located within the Curriculum section of the Western Cape
Education Department and forms part of the on-line learning strategy for the
Province..
