Children with Diabetes 1998 Year End Report Children with Diabetes 1998 Report Key Activities Incorporation 1998 was the first full year of operation for Children with Diabetes. Prior to December 1997, when Children with Diabetes was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) corporation, the Children with Diabetes web site operated as an extension of Castle Web, a for-profit corporation. Incorporation as an independent, a 501(c)(3) corporation was deemed essential to lay the foundation necessary to ensure the continued operation of Children with Diabetes and the web site well into the future. New Look to the Web Site On December 5, 1998, the look of the Children with Diabetes home page changed significantly. The graphics below show the old look on the left and the new look on the right. The goal of the new look was to be able to incorporate content, the popular poll, and a sponsorship graphic onto the home page. Figure 1 - Old and New Home Page Styles Trade Show Attendance In August 1998, Children with Diabetes had a booth at the annual meeting of the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). From our exhibit, we were able to share the website with hundreds of diabetes educators from around the world and handed out thousands of our web site address cards and our new brochures. Because of the success of the AADE show, Children with Diabetes plans to have a booth at the 1999 American Diabetes Association and 1999 AADE shows. Page 2 of 5 Children with Diabetes 1998 Report Brochures In support of the AADE trade show, Children with Diabetes created a tri-fold brochure outlining the features of the web site. Page 3 of 5 Children with Diabetes 1998 Report Income Distribution The following graph illustrates the distribution of income sources. Banner ads accounted for over half the income, with a single ad campaign making up 80% of banner ad revenue. A similar windfall ad campaign is unlikely in 1999. 1998 Income Summary 0.4% 3.1% 1.0% 7.5% 37.3% Sponsors Banner Ads Donations Product Sales Commissions Memberships 50.7% Expense Distribution The largest expense was web site hosting. Due to a large banner advertising contract, Children with Diabetes was able to extend a $500 honorarium to each member of the Diabetes Team in appreciation for their efforts. 1998 Expense Summary 6% 1% Web Site Ho sting & Internet Fees 4% A dvertising & P ro mo tio n 8% 33% Ho no raria to Dteam 2% Depreciatio n & A mo rtizatio n Legal, A cco unting & Licenses 14% Office Expenses P o stage/Freight Trade Sho ws, Travel & Entertainment 10% 22% A ll Other Page 4 of 5 Children with Diabetes 1998 Report Web Site Traffic Web site traffic grew considerably during 1998. The following table compares 1997 to 1998: 1997 398,146 3,693,780 User Sessions Pages Delivered 1998 771,687 6,246,009 % Increase 94% 69% A “user session” is defined as continued access from a single computer without more than a 15 minute span between page requests. Children with Diabetes does not track individual users because privacy is of paramount importance. “Pages delivered” refers to complete web pages delivered to a user’s web browser. A page can include many graphics, as well as the text of the page. Each graphic and the text count as a “hit.” The total number of hits was 13,583,663. Web site traffic does not include activity on the Message Board due to an incompatible log file format used by the Message Board software. The following graph illustrates the weekly user session and page count delivery statistics: 27-Dec-98 29-Nov-98 Visitors per Week 4,000 01-Nov-98 40,000 04-Oct-98 8,000 06-Sep-98 80,000 09-Aug-98 12,000 12-Jul-98 120,000 14-Jun-98 16,000 17-May-98 160,000 19-Apr-98 20,000 22-Mar-98 200,000 22-Feb-98 24,000 25-Jan-98 240,000 28-Dec-97 Pages Delivered per Week Children with Diabetes 1998 Access Trend Week Beginning Pages Visitors The graph clearly shows the yearly drop in activity that precedes the holiday season in December.
