Outdoor & Adventure in the West of Ireland The rugged scenery, clear waters and winds sweeping in off the Atlantic make the West of Ireland perfect for lovers of the outdoors and adventure of all kinds and a touch of adrenaline is the perfect accompaniment to the breathtaking views. Whether you are a fair weather adventurer just hoping for a little fresh air, or a dedicated adrenaline junkie in search of your next thrill, you’ll have a choice of outdoor activities on your doorstep. 13 One of the best ways to appreciate the incredible scenery is to get out there and be a part of it. Coillte, Ireland's leading forestry company, has a wide range of recreation sites across the country, 16 of which are in the Ireland’s West region. Here you can access miles of walking, cycling, hiking, multi-access, and long distance trails, fish, picnic, watch wildlife, launch your canoe on the rivers, visit megalithic sites or just sit and enjoy the outdoors. The choice is yours and for further information you can visit www.coillteoutdoors.ie 9 Boating Island scattered waters, calm bays and dramatic coastline make the West coast ideal for sailing, sea kayaking and boat trips with visitor moorings, tuition and equipment rental available in several locations. Inland, the River Shannon and its lakes are another perfect location of more leisurely boating and watersports. 25 Scuba Diving Water clarity and an abundance or sealife attracts divers from all over to this area. The good visibility, varied dive sites and frequent sightings of dolphins and seals makes this a remarkably rewarding place to dive. The main dive locations are located around the offshore islands of Inishbofin, Inishturk and Clare Island and include everything from easier beginners dives to more advanced and exciting wreck diving. 1 36 7 2 Surfing The West coast experiences the unharnessed power of the Atlantic winds and is an excellent surfing location. The jagged coastline ensures a great variety of beaches, so you’re sure to find a good swell on one of them whatever the wind direction. In Mayo, Keel on Achill Island and Carrowniskey and Carrowmore near Louisburgh are good spots to try. The best waves are in April and May and again in September and October, but even at the busiest times you’ll rarely find the surfing beaches too crowded. Walking & Cycling We’re not short of experienced and entertaining walking guides offering a wide range of services for all levels of fitness from low level walks to hill walking, day trips to more extended walking and cycling holiday packages. If you’re more interested in going it alone then take advantage of the recent addition of a wide variety of new looped walks or the long distance way marked ways. Alternatively the new series of half-day and fullday signposted cycle routes around our three cycle hubs of Achill Island, Clifden and Westport are definitely worth further investigation. 11 24 30 31 21 12 18 22 34 3 27 Windsurfing Again the consistent winds make windsurfing a popular pursuit. Most adventure and activity centres offer tuition for the complete beginner which should get you up and running in within 60 minutes. For the more advanced there is tuition on free styling and blasting. 29 Outdoor Festivals & Events Whatever your outdoor activity of choice we have a festival or event to suit from the more relaxed walking festivals in the tranquil countryside to the adrenaline charged Rat Race adventure sports race in the heart of Galway City.
