April 2012 May is Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month! Riding a Motorcycle Safely - this month and every month. It’s tempting to jump on that bike and take off, but your safety must always come first! Here are some tips to make your motorcycle adventure fun and of course safer! Make sure your motorcycle is working properly. It shouldn’t give you nasty surprises when you are underway! Verify the brake pads aren’t worn out, the lights are working, and the tire pressure is right. Get into the habit of inspecting your bike every time you wash it. For those of you that ride not wash - inspect your bike after every long ride. SHARE SHARE THE ROAD ROAD THE Motorcycle riding means that you take full responsibility for your own safety. A motorcycle rider can never be as “safe” as if they were in a car. Learn to anticipate the mistakes of other people on the road. Anticipating mistakes and reacting with the right behavior is key to your survival. You’ll have to work for your own safety! MOTORCYCLES ARE EVERYWHERE Sharing the road with cars. The big difference between driving a car and riding a motorcycle is that in cars, the secondary safety is enormous really look out for them—and to take extra care to safely ‘Share the Road’.” While on a motorcycle, the safety is almost entirely in your own hands. Sometimes motorcycle riders fail to see the other vehicles. In about 1/3 of accidents motorcycle riders and car drivers failed to account for visual obstructions and engaged in faulty traffic strategies. Keep yourself in good shape: Eat on time. Just as your bike needs fuel, your body needs food in order to run. Low/ High blood sugar can affect your judgement. Keep yourself hydrated with proper beverages. Water is essential to the overall function of your body. When your are dehydrated you can experience fatigue, headaches and cramps, you can also experience black outs, which of course can be deadly. Especially on a long ride, water is as crucial as gas in your tank. Keeping your body temprature regulated is important. When your core temperature drops, your body begins to cut off blood supply to your hands, feet and your head. When the blood flow to your brain slows down, your decision making abilities start to slow down as well. Just like an intoxicated person has problems performing two tasks at the same time, as in clutching and braking, so does a person with the beginnings of hypothermia. Last year at this time we had 434 registered. The 657 is also low in the fact that our Fargo location just now opened up for registrations! So if we project this number out for the season...it is going to be a great year for safety training. Please encourage your friends to take either the BRC or ERC, no matter how long they have been riding. Statistics are proof that certified riders are less likely to get into a crash by putting to use the skills learned. Cutter and Don have traveled to Fargo to complete the paper work for our Fargo location. Ground will be broke soon and classes will start the first of June! The new ABATE of ND - Motorcycle Safety Program will be at 3420 Sheyenne Street, West Fargo. This is in the Eagles Run development. It has easy access from all directions and will be highly visable. April 2012 “Let’s Ride Together” Greetings Fellow Abate members Your safety education department is in full throttle mode right now. Classes are filling up into July for Minot and Grand Forks. June dates are still available for Bismarck and Fargo, along with a few ERC classes in May. Our new location has been purchased by our build to suit landlord. We are extremely excited about finally having our own space in the Fargo area. We believe that this operation will fund future growth opportunities and increase value to your organization. We will keep you updated on the progress on the ABATE of ND Facebook group. We are off to a bad start already this year with two fatalities. Getting trained will give you the skills necessary to avoid crashes. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor sign up today at ndmsp.com to reserve your spot for a safety class. We are in the final stages of working with MidContinent Communications on the production of our new ads. These ads will deliver a ride responsible along with a get trained message. I would like to acknowledge all of the Excellent work that MidContinent provides Abate of North Dakota. Last year by using our non-profit status we were able to secure an additional $200,00 worth of television commercial time for our share the road campaign. Volume 37 Issue 4 In closing, I would like to challenge all members to sign up for safety training. I bet you spend countless hours on the cleaning and fine tuning your ride, why not spend time on your safety? The ERC is only 4 hours long and the skills you gain while riding your own bike will make “the ride” more enjoyable and safer. Remember, if you are a current ABATE member, or become one before the end of the class, we will refund you 50% of your fee plus you will receive a $50 gift certificate, so sign up for an ERC class today. SHARE SHARE THE ROAD ROAD THE MOTORCYCLES ARE EVERYWHERE Riding on hot summer days are just as dangerous for you as riding in cold weather. Many riders think this is the time to get that great tan, but in reality, that is the best way to get sun-stroke, even rides as short as an hour. Light weight, light colored and loose clothing will allow your body to breath and will naturally cool your core temperature. Keeping your neck cool will help to diminish health risks. This can be as easy as soaking a bandana in cold water. Because the large veins that feed your brain are so close to the surface. Cooling your neck will cool your body temperature. Some tips to make your RIDE a safe JOURNEY. start riding early in the day (at daybreak in extremely hot climates). Stopping by midday and having an extended siesta makes good sense. When riding at dusk or dawn watch out for animals on the road and be aware that visibility diminishes. Where there is a choice of routes, take the road at higher altitude or one that is shaded by trees. It will be cooler and may be more fun. Keep your water bottles full. Keep moving or turn your engine off. Riding flat out can also lead to engine overheating. Never throw cold water on a hot engine – it could crack Use the correct engine oil & check level often. If the oil gets too hot it may get too thin to lubricate effectively. Do the usual motorcycle checks – tires, chain, water etc – but more often Cover your black vinyl seat with a lighter colour to prevent butt burns! And FINALLY - Remember to ride within your limits. If your thirsty - drink, hungry - eat, cold -warm up, hot - cool down, tired - sleep. 6 ABATE of North Dakota and our Business Partners are supporting the federal, state and local designation in an effort to increase awareness of motorcyclists with our annual “Share The Road” campaign. The “Share The Road” cards are available for a $1 donation at participating businesses. By purchasing these cards you are helping to increase awareness and support your motorcycle safety program. While you are there, please tell the business “thank you” for their support of motorcyclists. We also have 18x24 full color, two sided heavy duty yard signs that you can purchase for $10 at the office. These are a great way to remind street traffic that “Motorcycles are Everywhere.” By increasing education and awareness of the importance of safe riding and the need for mutual respect for all motorcyclists and motorists, we can continue in our efforts to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities on the highways and back roads nation. Check out the ABATE Group on Facebook during the Month of May for Safety and Riding tips. Like them and share them, the live you save could be your own! Remembering those that we have lost, this Memorial Day and everyday! April 2012 “Let’s Ride Together” District 2 Burke - Renvlle - Bottineau Ward - McHenry - Pierce Greetings Dist 2! May is Motorcycle Awareness month! You can help finance this campaign, and show you are a biker. How do I do that, you may ask? Well we have the answer for you! Let us know, and buy a yard sign. We have several left, so contact us. If you want one for your vehicle, we have a smaller version too. Sign up for a ERC class. This will not sponsor the Awareness Program, but I needed to get in a plug for Todd somewhere. Try and be visible at all times. Remember the signs on a lot of trucks? If you can’t see my mirrors, I can’t see you? That works for cars, SUV’s, and pickups. Ride so you are visible. Make eye contact to make sure that your are seen at intersections. If they aren’t looking at you, they may later say opps, almost got that one. Don’t be “That One”! Tell everyone you know, “I’m a rider, watch out for my friends and I.” Contact the ABATE office and make a donation to this worthy cause. They take Credit Cards. I personally think the yard sighs are the way to go, as they raise money, and they are a constant reminder to everyone who passes your house. Heck, buy one for a friend too. This is why the class sizes are smaller. You will ride away a much better rider. Be careful out there. The sand is still on some of the streets. Even after the streets are swept, they leave behind a fine powder that stays until a hard rain washes it away. A guy dumped his bike right across the street from me the other day, and he wasn’t going fast at all. The back end came around on him on a downhill curve. By the time you got the newsletter we had spring! What a beautiful month it was. Now the wind blows everyday--this is called springter--that’s the days before spring really gets here--I’m sure you already knew that so I shouldn’t have to explain it!!!! Must be time to get to new business. The Weinersnitzel Run & CMA Breakfast is Saturday, May 19th. This is our Dist. 3 Spring Opener, it will be a beautiful day so don’t miss it. We’ll leave Devils Lake at 9am for a great breakfast at the Hamar country church on Hwy. 20, fellowship & Bike Blessing--and it’s all free! Then when our breakfast wears off a little so we can swing our leg over the scooter seat, we’ll ride on over to New Rockford for the Weinersnitzel Run. This will leave from Buck-it’s in New Rockford at 11:30am. We’ll return at about 6pm for a great supper. Like I said about 5 years ago-Dist. 3 likes to eat! Let’s get signed up for an Abate safety course and have a safe riding season. Go to www.ndmsp.com to view schedules and to register for a class. Which, at the time seemed like a great plan knowing the weather in ND would be warming up but never did we imagine that it would be in the 70’s! But, as they say, the scenery in Florida with the palm trees, the ocean and 85 degree temps were still great. Daytona, like Sturgis, has a lot of shirt shops and vendors of all types but it also has a great view of the ocean when you get to the end of main street. We were standing in the crowd in front of Daytona Harley Davidson, watching a painter and when I looked about five feet to my left there was Willie G. Davidson standing in the crowd. The painter using 4 inch paint brushes was slopping paint all over a 6 foot square canvas and in the end it was a picture of Willie G. and was auctioned off with the money raised being given to the charity of Willie’s choice. The following day Pat and I headed south from Orlando for the 400 mile trip to Key West. It was a day of mainly putting the miles behind us as we had reservations in Key West. Some riding friends of mine call me Rainman and Pat found out why. Showers followed us all the way down the keys. Key West was enjoyable with lots of places to eat and sights to see and of course a Harley shop for a shirt or two. The ride back north was a lot slower pace down the back roads of Florida through the everglades and the farming country where the crops look much different than in ND. The sweet smell of the citrus groves are awesome especially in the evening when you smell the trees but don’t see them. After bidding farewell to the alligators that were looking at us like we were lunch on the airboat excursion in the everglades we arrived back in Orlando. We headed north, but since we had an extra day, friend Pat suggested we head up to North Carolina. We were so close and to ride the Tail of the Dragon was a challenge we welcomed. For those of you unfamiliar with the Tail of the Dragon it is highway 129 between Robbinsville, NC and stretching into Tennessee. In 11 miles there are 318 curves. At Deals Gap located on the state line there is a tree called “The Tree of Shame” on which hang numerous parts off of bikes that failed to make the curves hang. Although the April 2012 “Let’s Ride Together” Tail of the Dragon road was great, my favorite road that we took was the Cherohala Skyway which runs between Robbinsville NC and Tellico Plains TN. The posted speed limit on the road is 45 and the road winds up mountain sides and across the top of the Smokey Mountains and you end up at over a mile high. The road surface is smooth and the curves are mostly good for the 45 speed limit. By the time you make the 50 or so mile course across the top of nonstop curves you know you have had a great ride and a great day. This will be one area that I hope to return to and ride again as we only briefly scratched the surface of all the great roads that are there to ride. Until next month ride safe ride free. We wanted to start out by reminding everyone that Fargo’s ndmsp classes start June 1st! The classes are going to be out at our new range! We are getting anxious to see the final results! In case you happen to be in the area it is going to be out by Hooligans out by Eagle Run in south West Fargo. Come join us for the Basic or Experinced Riders Courses. Even us as district reps will be taking the courses! Maybe you will get lucky enough to take them with one of us! It’s very exciting to say that we are going to have our own course and facility up here! Just a note to last months newsletter about a starting and ending location to our “Just Cause” ride, this problem has solved itself. With the new ABATE facility going up in Eagle Run, this gives us the perfect starting and ending place for the run. We want to say yet again that we are as impressed as can be about our monthly meetings. Our last few meetings have had larger turnouts. It makes it a lot more fun at the meetings when you guys all come! We really like meeting you guys and getting to know you. There is a lot of positive change in our district and we really like the direction it is taking! We are really hoping the weather breaks just a little bit more so that we get the bikes coming to the meetings. Then we can have a “brief ” meeting followed by a nice ride! That sounds more fun than just sitting around talking anyway doesnt it? Also, from now on we are going to try to make it a point to refer to the “meetings” as “social gatherings” or “social get togethers.” It doesn’t sound quite as indimitading that way! We are really happy for the growth and support in our area. Right now buisiness sponsors is unfortunately one of our weak points. If anyone knows of a buisiness that would like the opportunity to sponsor ABATE and get all the benefits of the sponsorshitp send them our way! The business sponsors are our biggest asset and not only does it benefit us but don’t forget that it benefits the sponsors too! We are going to be having our next social gathering at Specks Bar on May 10th at 7:30pm. We hope to see you all there! If the weather holds, bring your bikes because we want to get out riding more! It wouldn’t hurt to warm-up a bit and I could do without all the wind. I still haven’t got it out yet, maybe this weekend, still have a bucket of parts to put back on, hopefully no leftovers. Maybe a new tire for the front. Sure don’t take long to burn up the extra money the IRS didn’t need, Bless their Heart. Well, rider classes are in the works, get signed up for a BRC or a ERC course. I know earlier in March there was a delay with the BRC but its all worked out now. The Individuals M/C will be accepting the challenge and taking the ERC on Saturday, April 28 in Bismarck which should be fun and also entertaining but really, if it saves one crash it’s all worth it. May is Motorcycle Awareness Month, pass the word. Plaques and signs are out so buy a plaque and help support the education program. Menoken is coming faster than you think, plan on attending. Better yet, sign up 10 friends as new members and get two tickets to Menoken! Everyone needs to be members to attend, why not sign them up and reap the benefits? Check out the What’s Happening section, there are still some Bike Shows going on. Bottom line is get out and enjoy your freedoms while you can. So many things like health can turn on you, or the biggest threat, Politicians. They can take away your freedoms quick. The best way to protect yourself from the man is (strength in numbers) in a organization like Abate or MRF. You may have heard not too long ago, about the law trying to pass noise level ordinances. You would get pulled over and checked just because you ride a bike w/o stock exhaust? Really? Some guys are asking for it, when they red line it because they think it makes them a big bad biker. Yes I like loud pipes, but there is a time & place, the voting citizen may not and we will all pay the consequences. Kent and Trish will take the ABATE truck and trailer to Minot for the State Fair Parade and Alice and Tom will be in charge of the 4th of July Parade in Mandan. We will try to do a ride to Medora for the Car Show weekend. A joint District 2, 9, 10 and 9/10 north ride to Mobridge is tentatively scheduled for August 11th. Toy run in August ????? Still working out the details on this. We are also working run to Lindemann’s Museum in Golden Valley on Sptember 8th. The passion for riding a motorcycle is growing and with that comes more riders and events. I just hope that everyone is a certified rider. I have taken the Experienced Riders Course twice and have learned valuable lessons each time. The more riders = the more crashes. Let’s do our part in reducing crashes by getting certified. Riding responsible is also a huge factor. Riding Responsible is not just about alcohol. I am choosing to be more responsible by adding a trike kit to my bike until I can get my strength/ health back. This was a struggle to do, but I would rather ride responsibly than not ride at all!! . Please be safe out there and keep the shiny side up. We had our first meeting of the spring at The Lewis and Clark in Washburn with about 20 members showing up..We discussed options for some rides with 9/10 south. Mentioned were rides down to Mobridge and a ride to Lindermann’s Garage in Golden Valley to see his bike and old car collection. We also discussed a burger feed at Sam’s Club in Bismarck with some Hooters employees joining us. More on this later. Don’t forget the upcoming Annual Abate State Rally at Menoken Grove on the 8th-10th of June. Gates open at noon on Friday. Right now I don’t have all of those freedoms. So ask yourself, what is your definition of freedom and do you actually have it? www.mrf.org The Definition of Freedom I was having a conversation with a good friend the other day who is widely loved and respected in our community. He is an wise old man. I really cant stress the old part enough, I mean this dude is older than old but wise, well sorta wise. He asked me a question I have thought about almost daily since he asked me three months ago. “What is the definition of freedom?” he pontificated. After thinking about it, I can say that I do not have an answer. I think its a lot of things to a lot of people. I think it is relative to everyone and totally limitless. But can also disappear completely in a second. Welcomes Stacie Mandan’s only - Licensed Esthetician Treatments Great for Men Too! Freedom stands for something greater than just the right to act however I choose. Rejuvenate your skin with Microdermabrasions and healthy peels, for a youthful radiance. Reward yourself with a massage, manicure, or pedicure and learn new makeup techniques. Certainly, freedom does mean the right to do as one pleases—to think, believe, speak, worship (or not worship), move about, gather, and generally act as you choose—but only until your choices start to infringe on another person’s freedom. Abuse of freedom leads to its demise, think about some yelling “fire” in a crowded theater. Think about laws that limit sound emissions for motorcycles. Some say the sharpest interpretation of freedom is the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action. I guess I could go along with that. Treat yourself... Senate Highway Bill Passes The United States Senate passed its version of a federal highway bill today. The measure (S 1813) provides $109 billion over two years for highway projects. The final vote was 74-22. The bill moved quite quickly, considering the speed of the Senate these days. There was some discussion over amendments, the bulk of which were rejected. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) is pleased to report that no federal helmet mandates are attached to this bill, which in the past has been the case. Even the last version of the bill that was voted on in 2005 had a full floor vote on an amendment that would have required every state to have a full mandatory helmet law, or have millions of dollars of their highway funds withheld. “This year the mandatory helmet law issue was only a small part of the very early discussion of the Senate bill,” said Jeff Hennie, MRF Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs. “Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) filed a few motorcycle amendments during the committee phase, but he did not bring them up for a vote,” he added. The future is blurry for the Senate bill, as the House of Representatives has been flip-flopping on supporting it. Right now the House is supporting its own five-year bill, but it has not been brought for a floor vote. While the MRF supports the House bill because it contains the language that would ban federal funding of mandatory motorcycle roadside checkpoints, it’s not likely to see the return of the 2010 funds. Both the House and Senate bills send all safety money in one pot back to the states to give them flexibility. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation encourages everyone to contact their US House Representatives and ask them to cosponsor “HR 904” which would prohibit federal funding of motorcycle roadside checkpoints. HR 904 currently has 37 cosponsors and is in the House Subcommittee on Highways and Transit. North Dakota’s US House Representative Rick Berg is not a current co-sponsor. The MRF will keep you updated on this and every other issue affecting motorcyclists in the Nation’s capital. A new Virginia law bans motorcycle-only checkpoints in that state. The Virginia Governor signed the bill into law on Feb 28th. It is being cautioned that the state of Georgia may be using motorcycle-only checkpoints as they did last year during Daytona Bike Week. 18 Volume 37 Issue 4 A partial repeal of Michigan’s helmet law making it a choice for those riders 21 and over, has passed and is headed for the governors desk. Michigan had issued a call for help to encourage the governor to sign it. He has 14 days to sign or veto the bill. If the governor takes no action the bill may still become law without his signature. As of this writing it is not known what action was taken. Under the Michigan bill “SB 291” riders who exercise their choice must also carry an additional $20,000 in medical coverage on their insurance policy. I was recently privileged to attend the 2012 Heartland Steam hosted by ABATE of Nebraska in Omaha. This is a seven state regional convention made up of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin. State and National leaders get together to compare how the states are dealing with legislative and safety issues and bring back a fresh look at how to improve our organizations. I was able to attend “Share the Road” programs from both Nebraska and Iowa, and one titled “The Cost of Impaired Riding”. The afternoon sessions were kicked off by an outstanding presentation called “Grassroots Organizations” by Kirk “Hardtail” Willard, President of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation. One of the most important reasons to join a State and National Organization is the true power of speaking with a loud voice. When a representative of your organization speaks to legislators, and has large numbers of membership support, they are taken seriously and have much more influence. They can also respond very quickly if needed when something unexpected comes up. Jeff Hennie, MRF Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs, has literally been called out at a moments notice when a committee meeting topic has turned to motorcycles. This is why it is so important that the MRF maintain an office in Washinton, DC. This is not unlike ABATE of ND’s Executive Director, Michael Jay “Cutter”, being at the ND Capital when our legislators are in session and motorcycle’s are the topic. That is just the first reason of many to support your organizations. Motorcyclists as a whole have been much more an influence on the issues we care about, than the general public. We are able to recognize and focus on our common goals. Join us at www.mrf.org and www.abatend.com and be heard! For those of you who don't know the Heartland STEAM is a seminar to educate and motivate. This seminar consisted of SMROs (State Motorcycle Rights Organizations) from Nebraska, Illinois, Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota. This seminar brings together all the state MRO leaders and national MRF leaders... to discuss motorcycle rights and safety. The most important thing I brought back is MRF's Alcohol Awareness Program - 3 R's. Be Responsible, Ride Responsible, and Take Responsibility. Be Responsible Set yourself guidelines and stick to them. Don't let your friends change the place where you've drawn your line. If you say I'm only going to drink so much, just one more is one too many. Ride Responsible Riding responsible means not riding impaired. If you're going to party, go ahead and have a good time; just don't make a bad choice and ride. Find someone to take you home. Call a friend with a truck or trailer or stay put. Take Responsibility Be the person that says, "Man you're wasted. Let's get someone to lock up your bike and you can come back tomorrow and get it." "I'll call home and let them know you're with me and we'll get a room to sleep it off." How you do it is up to you but just take responsibility and don't let this be the last time you see your friend alive. Until next time, Ride Free & Ride Safe.. Take it easy on the curves Many crashes happen there. You might overshoot the road or cross the centre line and get hit by oncoming traffic. Watch the road ahead, slow down and choose the correct lane position-before entering a curve. 7. If you choose to wear a helmet wear a good one Make sure your helmet has a sticker showing that it meets current safety standards. Avoid buying a used helmet. It may have been in a crash, and the damage may not be obvious. 8. Wear protective clothing designed for motorcycle riders Holy crap! Yes, that is a crash test dummy on the motorcycle above, but I still feel sorry for it! For those who’ve had to pack their bike away for the cold winter months, spring is an exciting time. The warmer weather, the budding flowers, the longer evenings. All that is begging you to get out riding again. But let’s not be too hasty! We know you want to ride but let’s not forget: Safety First. Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month is in May for just that reason. It can provide some protection during a crash, as well as shield you from the weather and flying debris. Keeping warm and dry will help you stay alert and maintain coordination. Wear your riding gear in layers so you can adjust to changing conditions. Jeans give little protection. Never ride in lightweight pants or shorts. 9. Protect your eyes and face Here are ten motorcycle safety tips to keep you alive and well this season: Constant wind can make your eyes water, preventing you from spotting hazards. Flying insects, dust and debris can hurt your eyes and face. The best protection is a full-face helmet with a built-in face shield. 1. Make eye contact 10. Be visible Never assume others see you. Always try to make eye contact with drivers who may be about to pull into your path. Wear bright, reflective clothing. Add extra reflective material to it or wear a reflective vest. Likewise, buy a bright-coloured helmet and stick reflective tape to the back and sides. Always keep your headlight on. Ride in the lane position where other drivers can easily see you and you’ve got room to move. Avoid all other vehicles’ blind spots. 2. Read “vehicle language” Even when drivers, cyclists and pedestrians do see you approaching, they often misjudge your distance and speed. Don’t rely on them. 3. Watch out for left-turning vehicles at intersections Getting hit by an oncoming vehicle that’s turning left is the most common type of motorcycle crash. 4. Check behind when turning left from a highway Watch your mirrors and make sure you have plenty of space behind. The drivers behind might not slow down for you. 5. Look out for hazardous road conditions Wet roads, fluid spills, sand, gravel, highway sealant, railroad tracks, potholes and other road-surface hazards reduce your traction. They cause many falls. Continuing education is just as important factor in your overall riding experience as is t-clocking your bike. Here are some sites that we hope you will explore and find some interesting tips along the way: Post the tips you like on the ABATE Facebook group for prizes during the May is Motorcycle Awareness Month! www.msf-usa.org www.ndmsp.com www.msgroup.org www.motorcycle-safety-tips.com www.motorcyclesafetyinfo.com www.motorcyclefactguide.com 24 April 2012 “Let’s Ride Together” Volume 37 Issue 4 I hereby acknowledge and accept my responsibility as a motorcyclist to set a good example to my fellow riders and do my part to project a mature, responsible image to the general public.
