Print Meeting - May 14, 2013 - Assigned Subject: Self-Portrait
Projection Meeting - May 21, 2013 - Assigned Subject: Self-Portrait
Workshop - May 28, 2013 - Advanced Photoshop with Leo Geis
May 7th Workshop: Night and Low Light Photography
This will be an educational workshop, followed in two weeks by a Night Photo Walk and followed four weeks later with another Night
Photo Walk. This gives you an opportunity to learn how to shoot Night/Low Light, followed by two live shoots (Photo Walks) to hone your
skills. This will then be followed by our bi-annual slide show night, the subject of which will be Night and Low Light Photography. Learn,
Practice, & then Show & Tell. More details will be announced.
May 28th Workshop: Advanced Photoshop w/ Leo Geis
Leo A. Geis is a "Certified Photoshop Expert". Leo will cover many areas in and outside of Photoshop. Don't miss this opportunity to hear
from an expert in his fields. Leo is still working on the presentation, but here is a tentative list of points that will be covered.
1. What is "Black Point Compensation"?
2. Does a crop factor sensor increase the "reach" of a lens?
3. Does a wide angle lens enlarge the foreground, or a narrow angle lens enlarge the background?
4. The dirty little secrets of autofocus.
5. Cavitating the Histogram.
6. Luminance Masking.
7. Alpha Channels in Photoshop.
8. Splitting the Sliders.
9. Blend Modes for Photography.
10. The dirty little secrets of RGB Curves, and various solutions.
11. HSL vs. HSB, and why use either?
12. sRGB: Is it really the work of the Devil?
13. Perceptual Conversions, Delta E and Dyschromatosia.
While everyone will learn from the information that Leo will share, his focus will me more towards the advance and expert level
photography members.

Events
May 18, 2013: Impact Imports Field Trip
Impact Imports
552 East Amity Rd.
Boise ID (Click here for Map)
The meet up time will be 9:45 AM on Saturday morning. We will be allowed to start photographing at 10:00 AM and continue until noon.
Use of flash is allowed and recommended as light levels inside the store are low. This is also an excellent place to practice slow shutter
speed shooting by having your camera mounted on a tripod and using a remote release.
Space within the store is limited and aisles are narrow so any kind of extensive flash equipment is not recommended. No electrical
outlets are available and any kind of extension cords are inappropriate. A small soft box over a flash unit would be a good idea. We
must keep in mind that this is a retail establishment and they are in business to sell products so their customer convenience must come
first.
Most items to be photographed are inside the store although there is a small outdoor area for garden items.
Impact Imports primarily imports exotic Asian art objects and architectural items. This is an opportunity to photograph unusual images
you might not otherwise see.
As an expression of your appreciation to the owners of Impact Imports would be to donate one or two digital images that they could use
on their website.
Please send your images to project@boisecameraclub.org no later than May 31 2013.

Member Spotlight: Jeff Armstrong
Our spotlight member for May is Jeff Armstrong, who is also our Field Trip Chair. Considering all the places he’s been - like Africa - he’s
the perfect man for the job. He’s been a member of BCC for about two years, and he’s already in a leadership position, which makes us
very happy. Jeff spent most of his life working in the construction industry. In 30 years or so, he built more than 85 homes, ran a home
inspection business, was a landlord, and topped it all off spending time as a NAUI Certified SCUBA instructor.
Jeff became involved in photography in his 20s, with an Asahi Pentax 35mm film camera. In the 60s and 70s he did a lot of underwater
photography, including stills and movies. His first underwater camera was a Nikon Calypso 35mm. He also used a Franke & Heidecke
Rolliemarin 70mm - a twin lens reflex camera. The housing for the underwater camera was designed by Mr. Hans Hass (an explorer
second only to Jacques Couteau), and Jeff still owns the complete unit!
While living in California, Jeff and family visited the northwest, with a stop in the Treasure Valley. That experience and the research they
did convinced them this was a great place to live.
His favorite subject matter is wildlife. If you’ve seen any of his photos, you’ll understand why. He has some great images. He’s been to
Africa four times (color me jealous). He calls it Magic Land and would return there any time the opportunity became available. His wildlife
photograph, especially birds, has been inspired by Tom Mangelsen and Artie Morris.
What’s in your bag Jeff?
That’s hard to answer because his equipment would need several bags. But he has two Canon bodies, lenses that range from a 15mm
fisheye to an 800mm beast of a telephoto lens, and a lot of lenses between. He’s definitely a gear nut. He also uses Lightroom 4 to
process images.
Do you have any ideas for a great club fieldtrip? Share your ideas with Jeff Armstrong.

Competition & Recognition
BCC Photographer Receives Recognition
Roxanne Overton, one of our more accomplished and recognized photographers, has added
to her acclaim once again. Last month her photograph "Bagan Sunrise" was selected by
Imaging Resource as the dailydigitalphoto.com photo of the day for March 29. This month
she's had another photo chosen - "Not Photoshop" which will be photo of the day for April 29.
Congratulations Roxanne!
Columbia Council of Camera Clubs (4Cs) Quarterly EID Competition
We have some great photographers in the Boise Camera Club, and beyond our local judging and competition, and beyond the images
sent by the BCC for club competition, we have the opportunity to compete individually. Find your best images, send them to the 4Cs.
Here's some information about the competition. The deadline for this round is April 30. The next round will end July 31.
