Lai Chun Yuen was by far the most popular Chinese opera theatre

Lai Chun Yuen was by far
the most popular Chinese
opera theatre in the 19th Century.
Built in 1887 and originally designed
in the style of a Chinese teahouse,
its overwhelming popularity made it
a prominent landmark. Graced by
Cantonese opera stars and patrons
from Hong Kong and China,
it was often used as a reference point
in Chinatown.

For all its complexities and intricacies,
one of the most distinct feature of
Cantonese Opera is the face painting.
Originally, only three colours were used
— red, white and black. Yet there are more
than 500 types of facial design. Each,
subtly different, implies various characters
and meanings.
A Chinese calligrapher uses the steady
and controlled movement of the paintbrush on paper
to draw his lines. The Chinese Opera actor, however,
paints the brush lines through controlled movement
of the face, while holding the brush steady, doing it
with great skill and eye for detail... Without the aid of
another, each actor applies his or her makeup.

We imagine Lai Chun Yuen
to relive its glorious days as a
boutique luxury hotel that creates
an unique hospitality experience
that pays homage to its roots —
Cantonese Opera.
In a bustling Chinatown where
visual excitement is celebrated,
the new Lai Chun Yuen is an oasis
to its context. A calming experience
as one journeys into the hotel,
subtle yet very complex and has
deep meanings, just like opera makeup.

In creating a memorable brand,
we look into the prominent architecture
that made it a landmark in the 19th century.
The rooms are identified as opera roles and
their exquisite headpieces become icons.
