Lai Chun Yuen was by far the most popular Chinese opera theatre in the 19th Century. Built in 1887 and originally designed in the style of a Chinese teahouse, its overwhelming popularity made it a prominent landmark. Originally, only three colours were used — red, white and black. Yet there are more than 500 types of facial design. Each, subtly different, implies various characters and meanings. A Chinese calligrapher uses the steady and controlled movement of the paintbrush on paper to draw his lines. The Chinese Opera actor, however, paints the brush lines through controlled movement of the face, while holding the brush steady, doing it with great skill and eye for detail... Without the aid of another, each actor applies his or her makeup.
