Elementary Ed Student, Wargin, Wins FATE Scholarship Patricia Wargin, a UCF Elementary
Education teacher candidate, recently
presented at the FATE Conference
on October 5-6, 2012. She copresented "Intoxicated with Professional Development: A
Different Type of HAPPY Hour." with Cynthia Hutchinson,
Karen Verkler, and Cynthia Walters. She also co-presented
"The Gossip-Box: Preparing Teacher Candidates to Create an
Emotionally and Physically Safe Classroom Environment" with
Cyndee Hutchinson. In addition, Patricia Wargin was one of
four Florida teacher candidates selected to be a 2012 FATE
Fanchon F. Funk Scholar. The Fanchon F. Funk Scholars
Awards are bestowed upon pre-service students recognized for
their potential as outstanding future educators. The FATE
Fanchon F. Funk Scholars received complimentary registration
to the 2012 FATE Conference, a plaque, a one-year
membership in FATE, and a $500 scholarship award.

released; Vocabulary in Action: Lessons from Great Literacy Teachers, published by Rowman & Littlefield. Dr.
Fawcett is a well-known author of books in the area of language arts. More titles can be found by searching the

Univ/Dist Partnership to Investigate Using TLE:TeachLivETM to Help Teachers Improve Student Achievement The University of West Florida and Santa Rosa County Public
Schools have been awarded a competitive grant to investigate
the use of virtual reality to change teacher practice and student
achievement. Ten sites across the country will participate in a
national research project led by the University of Central
Florida using TLE:TeachLivETM, a computer simulated
classroom based in mixed-reality technology to develop teacher
practice.

Research
In collaboration with Educational Testing Service (ETS), AERA
offers the AERA-ETS Fellowship Program in Measurement and
Education Research. This fellowship is designed to provide
learning opportunities and practical experience to recent
doctoral degree recipients and to early career research scientists
in areas such as educational measurement, assessment design,
psychometrics, statistical analyses, large-scale evaluations, and
other studies directed toward explaining student progress and
achievement. Up to two fellows will be selected for this
rotational research position at ETS's facilities in Princeton, NJ.
