THE LEGACY CONTINUES!
Three Generations with their University Rings
MARCH 2014
In its 44 years of existence, TAMIU has formed legacies and
traditions such as the Class Ring Ceremony which turns four
years old this year. While an unofficial tradition before this, there
was no formal recognition from the University for ring recipients.
When Minerva Corona ’77 and Oralia Jalomo ’82 graduated and
got their rings, TAMIU had different names. The University was
first Texas A&I University at Laredo and later Laredo State
University. Their daughter and niece, Olivia Corona ’13 was a
ring recipient last year. It was then that mother, aunt, and
daughter/niece were able to be part of this new tradition.

(right), and aunt, Oralia Jalomo ’82 (left), pose with their respective
rings at the Class Ring Ceremony this past Fall.
One of the campus’ most familiar sights that graces our official
ring is the Acequia Fountain. The fountain is key-shaped
symbolizing the key to opportunities. Once ring recipients
receive their ring, they dip it into the basin of water from the
Acequia Fountain to symbolize future opportunities. The Class
Ring is engraved with many University icons. You can learn more
about its symbols here.
We encourage students and alumni to be part of this legacy!
Alumni and students who have completed a minimum of 75 credit hours are welcome to purchase the ring on or
before Ring Ordering on Thursday, March 20 from 9 a.m.—7 p.m. at Zaffirini Success Center Rm 101 in order to
participate in this semester’s Ring Ceremony on Thursday, May 8. You may also purchase the Official Ring online
or you can call 866-225-3687.
