NEED TO ADOPT BEST PRACTICES IN COKE MAKING
Sri AP Choudhary, CMD, RINL, expressed confidence that the ongoing “45th Operating
Committee meeting on Coal, Coke & Chemicals” would provide useful inputs to improve the
health and life of Coke Oven batteries in Indian Steel Industries. He complimented the
organizers for choosing relevant topics like “Recent innovations in Coke Ovens & Coals
Chemicals” and “Operation and maintenance of Zero leak doors of Coke Oven Batteries” during
the technical sessions.
Inaugurating the meet, Sri Umesh Chandra, Director (Operations), RINL highlighted the need to
adopt best practices in Coke making since coke is a backbone of steel industry. He said that
mother earth gave us coal and we convert the coal into coke by technological process for the
use in industry, particularly in Steel industry. It is pertinent to mention that the use of coke for
industrial growth without causing harm to the society by way of pollution, effluents etc. is the
need of the hour. Awareness and knowledge on usage of coke and addressing the
environmental issues would largely help controlling of dust emissions, he added. Sri Umesh
Chandra referred for the Centre for Science & Environment Green Rating Project for Indian
steel plants where VSP was one of the two steel plants to receive “3 Leaves”, the highest rating
given. He said that the report gives an insight into the global and Indian best practices in Coke
making. These aspects should be kept in mind while deliberating on the best practices. He
called up on the participants to seriously discuss on how to improve and increase life of Coke
Oven Batteries in view of the latest innovations and technologies in coke making.
Sri PC Mohapatra, Director (Projects) said that coke making is extremely technical and labour
oriented process and mentioned that coke making industry has to comply with government
standards as the effluents are harmful to the society. He expressed hope, that the meeting
would enrich knowledge of the participants. He hoped the meeting would come out with
useful deliberations for the coke makers.
Sri R Ranjan, ED(Works) I/c said that coke making is the costliest component in steel industry
and required to face challenges in protecting the environment.
Sri Ashutosh Gupta, Secretary of the meeting said that there is every need to safeguard the
health and life of coke oven batteries against the backdrop of several innovation emerging in
coke making.
Sri Hukhum Singh, GM (CO&CCP)I/c welcomed the gathering. Sri R Nagarajan, GM (Coke Ovens)
proposed vote of thanks.
Delegates from public and private sector steel plants across the country participating in the two
day meet.
