SNHU Alerts SNHU alerts is an optional emergency-alert text messaging service for students, faculty and staff. SNHU Alerts is just one method the university will use to communicate emergency information. We will continue to use a variety of methods as appropriate, including e-mail, telephone and the Web. SNHU uses this notification system to send alerts about • Crisis situations affecting the SNHU community • Closings, cancellations, or delays of office hours or classes Important Student Handbook Information The student handbook is a critical document for SNHU students, as it contains many of the institution’s policies, expectations and student rights and responsibilities, as well as important federal compliance information regarding the use of substances. This information can be found online at snhu.edu/orientation. Click on Student Handbook. Communication with Students The university uses campus mail and university e-mail as the official means to communicate with students. It is the responsibility of the student to regularly check both his/her intercampus mailbox and e-mail account for information from the university. Failure to use these modes of university-tostudent communication will not relieve a student for missed deadlines or date responsibilities. Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, also known as the Buckley Amendment, affords students certain rights with respect to their educational records. Under the act, the primary rights of students include the right to inspect and review educational records, the right to seek to amend educational records and the right to have some control over the disclosure of information from educational records. The Act applies to all institutions that receive funds under any program administered by the U.S. Secretary of Education. Students also have the right to file complaints with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act Office concerning alleged failures by the institution to comply with the act. Institutions may disclose information to third parties without violating FERPA through what is known as “directory information.” At Southern New Hampshire University, directory information includes: • student’s name • address(es) • telephone listing(s) • electronic mail address • photographs • fields of study (major(s), minor(s), etc.) • dates of attendance/enrollment status • anticipated program completion date • class level • Participation in officially recognized activities and sports • Weight and height of members of athletic teams • Degrees, honors, and awards received • The most recent educational agency or institution attended Under the provisions of FERPA, students have the right to request that directory information be withheld from disclosure. Students who do not want information released to individuals or organizations outside the university must complete an Authorization to Prevent Disclosure of Directory Information Form and submit it to the Office of the University Registrar. This information can be found on mySNHU my.snhu.edu/Offices/Registrar/Pages/default.aspx. Releasing Information to Parents/Family Members Specifically, student information regarding academic performance (grades), discipline, and health and counseling records will not be provided to family/family members unless the student files a release with the Office of the University Registrar and/or the Wellness Center noting to whom he/she is authorizing access to his/her “educational record” information.
