Karin is an experienced nurse educator and consultant with over twenty years of teaching
experience at multiple levels. During her teaching tenure, she has been involved with multiple
projects including assessment, test-item writing, online education, informatics development,
active learning strategies, new graduate transition to practice, and the integration of classroom,
lab, and simulation innovations. She currently teaches third-semester nursing students in the
classroom and simulation lab, along with facilitating student success courses throughout the
curriculum. Her consultations focus on helping schools with at-risk students and curricular
innovations to improve outcomes. Karin currently serves on the Maricopa Nursing Testing
Committee, the T.I.G.E.R. Informatics Education Committee, and is the president of the Arizona
League for Nursing. Karin has consulted for the National League for Nurses Testing Services,
National Council State Board of Nursing, and several publishing companies related to NCLEX®
success. She is also a member of the National League for Nursing, the Arizona and American
Nurses Association, the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing, the International Nursing
Association for Clinical Simulation & Learning, the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, and was
founding president for the Arizona Simulation Network.

approach to academic success. Dr. Bristol is the owner of NurseTim, Inc., a faculty member at Walden
University, and serves on the board of directors for Health eVillages and the FSIL Nursing School
in Leogane, Haiti. His motto, “Today we will learn how to learn,” serves as a focus for everything he

Tablets and laptops are not required,
but many examples will be available for
you to try first-hand. However, if you do

HELPING STUDENTS LEARN HOW TO LEARN
This event is a hands-on exploration of the NCLEX® Test Plan from the aspects of
teaching, learning, assessment, and evaluation. The key to developing higher-order
thinking skills (especially cognitive functioning at the application and analysis level)
is bringing reality into the learning and assessment processes. Using the NCLEX® Test
Plans as that vehicle to reality is benefits all levels of the nursing curriculum. Not only
are outcomes better, but civility and collaboration can become the norm. Using active
learning strategies, evidence-based assessment principles, and a sanity-saving approach,
each participant will experience first-hand these curricular threads that are essential
to developing the next generation of nurses. This event emphasizes constructivist
learning theory and measures to prevent incivility combined with situated learning and
instructional design principles.
OVERALL CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES
Participants will:
1. Analyze the different components of the NCLEX® Test Plans.
2. Create effective learning experiences that promote civility and communicate
high expectations.
3. Develop multiple-choice and alternate-format test items that assess for applicationand analysis-level cognitive processing.
4. Analyze an assessment for potential improvements based on current nursing practice.
5. Develop a learning activity that promotes higher-order thinking in classroom,
laboratory, and clinical learning environments.
6. Create a plan to integrate NCLEX® throughout their nursing curriculum.
NURSING CONTACT HOURS
12 hours of nursing continuing education will be awarded upon completion of CE criteria
(6 hours for one day only).
NurseTim, Inc. is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by
the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
CE completion criteria includes: payment of conference fee, attendance of
the entire session, and submission of a completed evaluation tool.

if you are open to an oral presentation as well as a poster presentation. Of the poster abstracts selected, some
will be chosen for oral presentation.
