r SANTA MONICA To Whom It May Concern: (DrigGE ^^^J David Zucker's project of inspiring students to make Public Service Announcements (PSA) about our most pressing problems is awesome. It puts the student in the active roles of researcher, writer and creative director. The process challenges students to think critically about what makes the communication of an important message dynamic and effective. It demands a personal investment in the delivery of the message which instills the value of caring. The process of making a PSA feeds the development of socially responsible citizens and leaders. I have used the making of PSAs for course credit in my Environmental Politics courses at SMC for several years. David's project has provided a venue for featuring some of my students' best work. If more artists and cultural activists like David worked with teachers and students on problem-solving it could energize the classroom and brighten the future. The range of PSAs was excellent and the presentation was just the right length to communicate the importance of the messages, along with comments by David. I had the impression that seeing work by their peers was particularly motivating. Questions from my students indicated their interest in finding out more about the issues raised in the films, as well as the opportunity to create their own PSAs. In fact, three of my students produced their own PSAs, motivated in part by chance to share their work with a wider audience through David's series. In addition the two shown recently at the Student Film Festival at Santa Monica College engendered much applause. All PSAs were excellent, one was of professional quality, one was very humorous and one was by a first time director. I encourage ongoing support of David's efforts which clearly have an important place in our schools. Not only can the films encourage more environmental awareness and actions, but also encourage our burgeoning filmmakers to create works that make a difference. David is a true ambassador.
