Quarterly Neighborhood Representatives Meeting
OA President Bob Hauck called
the Quarterly Meeting of the
Greatwood Neighborhood Reps to
order at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, May 8.
There were 26 Neighborhood Reps
present, representing 22 out of 29
neighborhoods.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Judy Holy reported that the seven
members of the Color Landscape
Committee have been meeting
monthly to address all mailbox and
other islands in the neighborhoods.
They have taken pictures and
compiled information on all of
these areas and will come up with
a uniform planting plan to improve
them. Through the years, some
neighborhoods have planted around
these islands with either donated or
neighborhood funds. The committee
will not disturb these islands.
George Ranch Historical Park is a
living history museum that tracks
four generations of one family over
one hundred years of Texas history.
You can visit the 1830’s Jones Stock
Farm, the 1860’s Ryon Prairie Home,
the 1890’s Davis Mansion, and the
1930’s George Ranch Complex.
Enjoy historic home tours, cattleworking demonstrations, a working
blacksmith shop and more. You can
see cattle run through a dipping vat,
cowboys cooking by a chuck wagon,
and if you get there early, maybe your
children can let the chickens out at
the 1830’s Stock Farm and collect the
eggs.

S
drunk or high on drugs. Despite the doubt on many faces, most
let the actor grab the keys and get behind the wheel. It’s the
power of peer pressure and too many youngsters go along with
the crowd unless someone is strong enough to take a stand.
In the “Dateline” episode, a girl whose uncle was killed in a
drunk driving accident was the strong one. The parents were
in another room watching a TV monitor where they could see
how their teens were handling the situation. For the most
part, they were shocked and dismayed.
We have mentioned in previous articles how children pick
up their parents driving habits. The above example follows
the same pattern. It is not enough to just say don’t text or use
the phone while driving, or don’t get into a vehicle where the
driver is impaired from alcoholic beverages or drugs. If you do
not want them to do these things, you must set the example,
and not do it yourself. Talk with your teens about how even
the smallest amount drugs or alcohol effects the ability to
drive.

chool is out for summer vacation. Now, what do we do
with the children? Most people have already made plans
and rearranged schedules to keep the children entertained.
Our teenagers will not have the same interests as they did
in previous summers. For those who are mobile, they have
more temptations and peer pressure to deal with. One area of
concern will be their driving. Teens will promise that they will
obey their parents’ rules on drinking, texting, and the use of
cell phones while driving. What is of concern is that they may
get into a vehicle in which the driver has consumed alcoholic
beverages or drugs. Some of the examples on what your teen
may do were aired on a new TV series called “My Kid Would Not
Do That.” This educational special aired on Sunday evening at
6:00 PM on NBC Dateline. The teens promised their parents
that they would never text or talk on their cell phones when
behind the wheel. The vehicles were equipped with cameras
for several months. Even though they knew the cameras were
there, and they were being filmed, they exhibited behavior
they said they would not do. The program showed actual
footage of the teens being distracted while using the phone
and running into signs, mailboxes, curbs, and other objects.
The teens were also set up with actors who pretended to be

Neighborhood Concerns
SPEEDING
Now that summer is here, many of our children are playing
outdoors in their neighborhoods. Although they shouldn’t be
playing in the street, the reality is that when you turn a corner
there may be a couple of kids throwing a ball, riding their bikes
or just crossing the street without looking. This is what kids do.
We all have dinner parties or other social gatherings at our
homes. Obviously there will be cars parked in the street for
these occasions. Please make sure your guests are not blocking
the street or your neighbors’ driveways.
POOL PARKING
Please be aware of your children when going to and from your
cars when parked in front of our pools or on the streets going to
or from swim meets.
The speed limits in our neighborhood are 35 MPH on the main
streets and 25 MPH in the neighborhoods. 25 MPH is SLOW and
is posted for a reason. The reason is to keep us aware of the many
children in our neighborhoods. It’s a hard speed to maintain in
our rushed lives, but please make a real effort to SLOW DOWN.
Many of our residents have had to slam on their brakes in order
to avoid a child that suddenly appears from between parked cars.
If we maintain our speed limits and keep our cars out of the
streets, we will keep Greatwood a safe and attractive place for all
of our residents.
PARKING
Many of our residents are concerned about the increased amount
of parking in the streets on a daily basis. Not only is it an eyesore
for our streets to resemble a parking lot, but also a huge safety
issue. With high school and college-age drivers home for the
summer, with lawn crews with trailers and other service people
parked on both sides of the street, it’s an “accident waiting to
happen.” Kids often don’t think before running into the street
and when it’s between parked cars, it’s doubly dangerous.
SNAKES
There have been reports of snakes, some poisonous, in and
around homes and around backyard pools. We do live in a heavily
wooded community that has detention ponds and amenity lakes
and we do back up to the Brazos River. Snakes are a fact of life
and although most of us will never see one, they are around.
PLEASE park your cars in your driveway. This is an inconvenience,
when there are multiple drivers in the family, but a small one
when weighed against a possible accident. Talk to your yard
crew and other service people and ask them to drive slowly and
not to park directly across from someone who is parked on the
other side of the street.
Just be aware of your surroundings and make sure you check your
pools before taking a plunge. Make sure your kids are aware that
snakes might be around, especially if they’re the explorer types
that tend to roam the heavily wooded areas in the community.

he International Social Group for Adults recently held a
fun French themed dinner at Aura Restaurant in Missouri
City to celebrate “April in Paris.” Occasionally the group attends
performances in the theater district, enjoys sporting events and
sometimes holds themed socials in members’ homes to learn about
different cultures, food and attire. Looking for fun and something
different to do? This may be the group for you. If interested in joining

International Social Group for Adults:
The Ladybugs
The International Social Group for Adults (ISGA) is a
Greatwood couple’s social group open to all Greatwood
residents. This is a way to meet neighbors of all
nationalities and learn about their cultures in a social
setting. If you’d like to become a member, contact:

he Ladybugs, a social/civic organization in our area, held a
successful, spring fundraiser and garden party recently, which
included all types of activities and various types of cuisine. They
also collected items for the needy, elderly, and mentally challenged
for future visits to those area facilities. Since 2007, the group has
helped to cheer up many and have brightened the days of those who
may otherwise have been forgotten about in local area facilties, but
the Ladybugs stop to smell the roses too, by holding fun functions
such as the annual big hat Garden Party, etc. The group’s schedule
varies and they sometimes have functions on weekends as well
as during the weekdays. For information on becoming a Ladybug
to donate some of your time or to make new friends, contact the

Swim Team Ready for 2012!

20th Anniversary
T
he Greatwood Geysers Swim Team is ready to begin their
10th year of exciting competition! Head Coach Derek
Zerber has welcomed back assistant coaches Justin Kempisty,
Charlie Cox and Kasey Surratt as well as new coaches Rachel
Johnson and Darcy Stavinoha. Together they have spent the last
month conditioning the team and preparing them for their first
season in Division 2.
The Geysers will start this month with a Kickoff/Anniversary
Party. They will be co-hosting the event with the Greatwood
Gators (celebrating their 20th anniversary) on Friday, June 1st.
This is a great opportunity for the families from both teams to
come together and celebrate their community pride.
This month the team will switch their practices to Pool #1.
The practice times, however, will remain the same (4 p.m. – 8
p.m.). Due to the pool being cleaned on Tuesdays, Coach Derek
will re-design the practices on that day to be land-based – you
won’t want to miss them!

face a new parking situation. Out of respect for the residents
that live around the pool, the team is asking everyone to either
park in the pool parking lot, along Greatwood Parkway, or in
the Dickinson parking lot. Therefore, the Geysers suggest that
its families consider supporting their team by purchasing a
parking spot in the pool lot for all Geysers home meets for $100.

“T.S.I.: Realm of the Unknown” is the theme for this
summer’s Young Adult Reading Club for Teens, which began
on May 29, at all Fort Bend County Libraries locations.
Exciting free activities – from game days and movie nights
to cookie decorating and scrapbooking classes - are
planned, while area teens discover the wonders of the
world that can be found between the pages of a book!
Teens are encouraged to read as many books as they
can, and they will earn rewards based on the total number
of hours they spend reading or the number of readingrelated activities they complete. The reading activities
may include watching a movie based on a book, attending
a teen library program, or making a bookmark or poster
based on a book. Listening to audio books and reading
magazines and newspapers may also be counted.
Participants may register at any Fort Bend County
library, or they may register online by going to the FBCL
website (http://www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on
the “Teen SRC Sign-Up” image. Once the online registration
form has been completed, the teens will then have their
own online page on which to record their hours and
activities. Registration ends July 28.
For the irst ive activities completed, each teen will
receive a bookmark. The rewards continue with a key light
for 10 activities, a draw-string backpack for 15 activities,
and a reading trophy for the irst 20 books read. Reading
rewards can be redeemed beginning Monday, June 4. The
last day to pick up awards is August 25.
Weekly drawings for gift cards from area stores donated by the library Friends organizations -- will also
take place at each branch library. In addition, the names
of participants will be entered into a drawing for a $25gift card that will be awarded to several lucky readers
completing 20 activities or more, in a drawing scheduled
in August at each library location.
There is no charge to join the Summer Reading Club, and
it is open to all teens, regardless of the county of residence.
The program is sponsored by the Texas State Library, Fort
Bend County Libraries, and the Friends organizations that
support the county library system.

cemetery so Mr. Driggers said he would look into it and let us

CONSTABLE REPORT
Constable Randy Deluhy went over the incident report for
April.
He was also asked about the historical background of the
home that is now a bed and breakfast right outside the back
entrance to the Crossing at Rabbs Crossing and Macek Road.
His research turned up a personal connection to the home.

Pamela Britz, a Brooks Mill Rep, asked if they had any
information about who threw nails in the streets and sprayed
their neighborhood cars with fire extinguishers. Constable
Deluhy said they have stepped up patrols in Brooks Mill and
have an idea of those who were responsible for the recent
activity. They did find the empty fire extinguishers.
Officer Deluhy said they were beginning to see an increase in
requests for House Watches and to call their office to schedule.
All in all, Greatwood remains a very safe neighborhood.

“The Bassett home was moved south of Richmond and is now
the Great Oaks Manor Bed and Breakfast. It was built in 1913
by my great, great grandfather Clem Bassett. It is a Colonial
Revival style home and occupied the entire block between
Jackson & Liberty in Richmond, now the location of the Court
House Annex. The county purchased the house around 1960
to use as an annex, then sold the home in 1975.
Roseane Bernstein, a Lakeside Village Rep, asked about the
poor paint condition of some of the fences around the amenity
lake between Lakeside Village and Charleston Estates. This
will be looked into.
A question was asked about what the Post Office was going
to do about the damaged parcel boxes that are in a lot of our
neighborhoods. Kate Brewer, a Landing Rep, recently went to
the Post Office to address this issue. She was told that although
you could request that the Post Office replace the lock and
key for your personal box for a $45 charge, they are not going
to replace the locks on the parcel boxes. When they have to
replace the entire bank of boxes, they will include new parcel
boxes. If the parcel boxes in your neighborhood are not usable,
the Post Office will deliver packages directly to your door.
Clem Bassett was born in 1842 to Clement Bassett and Julia
Lee Beal. They came to Richmond shortly after the Battle
of San Jacinto. Clem Bassett was a member of Terry’s Texas
Rangers in the confederate cavalry. He was a cattleman with
an extensive farming operation. He also was a merchant
and helped organize the Jaybird Association and was its first
president. Clem Bassett was elected Sheriff of Fort Bend
County in 1890 and became Tax Collector in 1902. His wife
was Libbie Mitchell Bassett.”

Brazos Bend State Park, Fort Bend County
Volunteer Training
W
ant to make a serious commitment to a whole lot of
fun? Become a member of the Brazos Bend State
Park Volunteer Organization (BBSPVO). Staff is accepting
applications for the next round of training that will take place
September 8, 15 & 22, 2012. All three dates are mandatory.
Park Staff is seeking outgoing, self-motivated individuals
who are able to donate at least 48 hours per calendar year
and are able to assist park visitors year round. Volunteers
operate the park’s nature center and volunteer gift shop. They
conduct programs and hikes for the general public and school
groups, maintain various customer services and assist the
park maintenance staff with trail maintenance, etc. Volunteers
receive hands-on training in all areas. Application, interview,
liability waiver and criminal background check required.
Application deadline is June 30, 2012. Get your application in
soon. We can only accept 15 participants.
The BBSPVO has been serving park visitors for over
20 years and has been recognized by the Texas Parks &
Wildlife Department, the Texas State Senate and House of
Representatives as an exemplary organization that consistently
donates an average of 18,000 hours annually and in 2011 they
donated an all-time high of 20,489 hours. The Organization also
donates a substantial amount of funding that is used to directly
assist the park with operational, educational and customer
service needs. The majority of this funding is provided by
BBSPVO gift shop sales but also comes from private donations.
The BBSPVO is a 501, (C ), (3) non-profit organization.
Applications are also accepted for maintenance work only.
(One may start volunteering immediately after the criminal
background check clears and liability waiver is signed.)

every instructional classroom has a promethium board.
We also funded all the field trips. We provided classroom

2012-2013 School Year
For students entering 7th grade. Please be advised that
your child will be required to obtain these immunizations,
if they have not already done so, BEFORE the irst day of
school, August, 2012. Some physicians have been giving
these immunizations already, so your child may have
already had all of these vaccines. Please be sure that
you give us a copy of the most up-to-date immunization
records for your child.
GRHS Summer Theatre Workshop
Don’t miss out on the George Ranch High School summer
theatre workshop “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”
Gain experience in acting, learn technical theatre skills
and have a great time under the direction of Mrs. Rebecca
Walters, Theatre Chair at GRHS.
Workshop Dates: 6/18-6/21 and 6/25-6/28 (two
week workshop) from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. each day with a
performance on the last day, 6/28, at 7 p.m.

A couple of years ago, I quoted Albert Einstein… “Learn from
yesterday, Live for today, Hope for tomorrow. The important thing is
not to stop questioning.”
Another school year comes to an end, and as I’ve said so many times,
this year is signi icant to me as my own son moves on.
I am privileged to have gotten to know many seniors this year as they
move on in different directions with their lives. I know that this is the
beginning of a future that holds great promise for each of you. Follow
your dreams, stay true to the path, and never stop questioning…
I am looking forward to the next four years, as you begin the next
chapter in your lives.
