NEW EXHIBIT TELLS THE FORT BEND COMMUNITY STORY
WITH QUILTS FROM THE 1800S THROUGH THE PRESENT
Missouri City – Every Sunday in October, the DeWalt Heritage Center will feature a
special exhibit of quilts dating from the 1800s through the present. “Quilting Our
Community Together” will be open from 1-4 p.m. on October 4, 11, 18 and 25 and is
FREE.
A few of the featured quilts include:
-
Longtime Richmond Mayor Hilmar Moore’s baby quilt;
-
A quilt reportedly made by “Mother of Texas” Jane Long;
-
Squares from Ruth Dew Lalley’s lace bedspread, which will be showcased
at the 2015 International Quilt Festival; and
-
Dew family quilted pieces from more than four generations.
“I cannot imagine how many hours of labor and love went into these quilts,” said
Special Project Historian Diane Ware. “I love to imagine the voices of the women who
created them – gossiping with friends or singing to a sleeping child or even cursing an
errant stitch. Their quilts keep them so alive.”
Members of the Coastal Prairie Quilting Guild will be giving ongoing quilting
demonstrations and will lead a “Create a Square” activity each Sunday. Guests will also
be able to tour the historic Dew House and learn about the family’s stories and
contributions to east Fort Bend County history.
The DeWalt Heritage Center is housed inside the historic Dew House, which is located
in Kitty Hollow Park. The Park is located at 9555 Hwy 6 South and is a special project of
Fort Bend County and the Fort Bend County Museum Association. For more
information, please visit http://www.fortbendmuseum.org/dewalt-heritage-center.html
