Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have to audition for the
program?
No, CLC has an open enrollment policy. However
you may be able to place out of beginning classes.
Do all dance courses count towards my
“area of concentration electives”?
Yes.
Are there any performance
opportunities?
Yes. We produce a professionally choreographed
dance concert in the fall. Students are able to
choreograph for the spring concert. You may earn
credit for these performances under a special
topics course.
Prairie Spirits Dance Troupe
When you perform for the CLC dance department
you become a member of the Prairie Spirits Dance
Troupe. The troupe performs on campus and off.
Recently we were selected to perform at the
Chiwaukee Dance Festival at the Genesee Theater
in Waukegan, where students performed and took
classes with The Joffrey Ballet and The Gus
Giordano Jazz Dance Company.
The troupe also attended the American College
Dance Festival in Minneapolis.

Timeline
Dancers and Choreographers
Valerie Alpert, M.F.A.
Visit www.clcillinois.edu/credit/register/
for steps on how to register.
Most dancers begin formal training at an early age—
between 5 and 15—and many have their first
professional audition by age 17 or 18.
Dancers and choreographers face intense
competition; only the most talented find regular
work.
Many dancers stop performing by their late thirties,
but some remain in the field as choreographers,
dance teachers or artistic directors.

Student Experience
“CLC gave me the chance to
create my own dances, then
audition and work with the
dancers to see my ideas brought
to life on stage. It doesn’t matter
how much dance experience
you’ve had in the past—if you
have an interest in dance you can
pursue it here, which is a unique
opportunity.”
