About Smartsims
Smartsims accelerates business learning through computer simulation. We started in 1992 as a
research and consulting team at the University of Auckland, and our goal was to create resources to
improve the learning process for business students and businesses. We felt that simulation was the
best way to get people more actively involved in the learning process, and so to improve the
effectiveness and efficiency of the learning.
Our first product was an interactive simulation of a manufacturing company called MikesBikes.
MikesBikes is a state of the art internet-based, business learning simulation. By simulating a bike
industry with market segments, distributors and firms, MikesBikes allows students to learn by doing
and practice a wide range of business disciplines and skills effectively, in a compelling and responsive
simulated environment. MikesBikes instructors are finding they are having more fun with their
students, making the classrooms a more interactive and rewarding environment.
Smartsims business simulations ensure students consider the circumstances of Customer,
Competitors and Company Competence [the 3 C's] and engage in decisions on Product, Price,
Promotion, and Place (Distribution) [the 4 P's] specific to either general business strategy or
marketing strategy and implementation depending on the course focus. They are required to analyze
data, collaborate with each other, and make decisions just like managers in the real world with their
performance being ranked on Shareholder Value against other teams

National Business Olympiad Structure
I.
Stage I: City Level Competitions (College of Management, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi
University Katra, for J&K)
City level competitions will be held in different Cities across the country in the months of October –
November 2010. The winners will be awarded a trophy and also a chance to compete in the Grand –
Final Prelims that will be held in the last week of November at IIM Ahmedabad.
II.
Stage II: Grand – Final Prelims
Winning teams from city competitions and wild card entries issued to top B-Schools and Corporate
teams by IIM A Confluence Managing Committee will compete for a birth in the Grand Final.
III.
Stage III: Grand Final
Top 8 performers from the Grand Final Prelims will compete for the title.

Smartsims would like to propose Mikes Bikes – Intro / Advanced Business Simulation competition as
we believe it aptly addresses the needs of participants at the NBO, 2010. In order to successfully roll
out the Business Simulation competition, Smartsims will provide facilitator at the competition. The
facilitator will facilitate Business Simulation for participants at the competition.
The following section of the document describes MikesBikes – Intro / Advanced Business Simulation:
MikesBikes - Intro: Introduction to Business Simulation
Through our interactive interface students will be taught the cross-functional disciplines of business,
and how the development and implementation of strategy involves these disciplines. The competitive
element of MikesBikes encourages students to understand these principles and have fun doing it!
MikesBikes-Intro is an introduction to business simulation that teaches your students the key
concepts of business as they run their own company within an online industry, competing against
other students within their course.

Students start as Advertising/Brand Managers of a Bicycle Manufacturing company and get
hands-on experience in making decisions related to Pricing, Marketing and Production.
•
As each decision period progresses students will be given more control over their company,
becoming responsible for Distribution, Operations, Product Development, and Financial decisions.
•
Students analyze real financial reports and market data.
•
Formulation of a comprehensive strategy, starting with a single product focus. As the simulation
progresses students can develop new products and release these into emerging markets.
•
Students compete against others in their course in an online multiplayer environment. The
competitive nature of MikesBikes makes the simulation so enjoyable for students, while encouraging
involvement and learning in a way that no other teaching methodology can.

MikesBikes uses a dynamic marketplace so that students must analyze the changing market
and understand the needs of their customers, therefore reinforcing the importance of planning,
implementation and evaluation of strategy.

key functional decisions involving Price, Marketing, Distribution, Finance, Operations, HR, and R&D

detailed Operations and Cost Accounting reports

Formulate a comprehensive strategy, starting with your existing product. Then adapt as you
develop new products for emerging markets.
