For example, say you wanted to form the number 43. The number 40 in Spanish is “cuarenta” and the number 3 is “tres”. To form 43, you would simply put the two together joined by a “y” (which means “and”). So 43 is “cuarenta y tres”. In English this would be “forty and three”. Let’s take another example—586. The number 500 is “quinientos”, 80 is “ochenta” and 6 is “seis” so we would end up with “quinientos ochenta y seis”. In English, this would be “five hundred eighty and six”. Notice we only use a “y” between the tens and ones number. We never use “y” anywhere else in a complex number. Here are some more examples: 67 = sesenta y siete 84 = ochenta y cuatro 243 = dos cientos + cuarenta y tres = doscientos cuarenta y tres 752 = setecientos + cincuenta y dos = setecientos cincuenta y dos 4392 = cuatro mil + trescientos + noventa y dos = cuatro mil trescientos noventa y dos 9216 = nueve mil + doscientos + dieciséis = nueve mil doscientos dieciséis 1 uno Sa m ple file 2 dos 3 tres 4 cuatro
