VERMONT HIGHER EDUCATION COLLABORATIVE www.vthec.org 802-498-3350 • The Building Blocks of Brain Development• From Research to Practice in Early Childhood Education Presenter(s): Todd Grindal, Harvard Center on the Developing Child and other experts from the field This 4 part workshop series will provide participants the latest brain research in early childhood development and explore how these findings impact the areas of: language/communication, social emotional development and physical/motor growth and development. Todd Grindel, Research Assistant, Harvard Center on the Developing Child, will facilitate the first workshop followed by various experts in each of the subsequent workshops. Session 1: The Brain and Early Childhood Development: Lessons for Teachers and Caregivers Friday, October 5, 2012 This day will provide an overview of the core science of early childhood development and incorporate key concepts that emerge from decades of neuroscience research. Three particularly important messages will be highlighted ‐‐ brains are constructed from the bottom up, emotional experiences are built into the architecture of the brain, and nurturing relationships are crucial to healthy development. This material will be presented in an engaging interactive format and framed to inform the day to day practices of early childhood educators. Session 2: Language/Communication (January, 2013) Session 3: Social Emotional Development (March, 2013) Session 4: Physical Motor Development (May, 2013) The series will: provide information for early childhood educators and early childhood special educators working in various settings: community early care and education programs in public schools and Head Start programs; would be appropriate for teachers, administrators, parents/family members and mental health workers to attend; provide a balance of presentation and active engagement with the content; be facilitated by experts in various areas and by practitioners from the field; provide “take aways” for implementation into one’s practice; include practical information for supporting parent/family collaboration and engagement; provide participants access to a facilitated VT‐HEC resource page, that will give participants a chance to create a community of professionals who jointly process the new information from the workshop and share feedback on the application of this new learning; offer participants the option to earn undergraduate or graduate credit through attending the workshop series.
