Agriculture in UAE
Agricultural production centered largely in the
emirates has expanded considerably through the
increased use of wells and pumps to provide water
for irrigation. However, agriculture contributes only
a small fraction of gross domestic product (GDP) and
employs less than one-tenth of the workforce. Dates
are a major crop, as are tomatoes, cucumbers, and
eggplants, and the United Arab Emirates is nearly
self-sufficient in fruit and vegetable production. The
country also produces enough eggs, poultry, fish,
and dairy products to meet its own needs but must
import most other foodstuffs, notably grains. The
Arid Lands Research Centre experiments with raising
crops in a desert environment. Most commercial
fishing is concentrated and the emirates have one of
the largest fishing sectors in the Arab world.
Economy of UAE
The economy of the United Arab Emirates is the
second largest in the Arab World after Saudi Arabia
with a gross domestic product (GDP) of $570 billion
(AED2.1 trillion) in 2014. The United Arab Emirates
has been successfully diversifying its economy. 71%
of UAE’s total GDP comes from non-oil sectors.

Although UAE has the most diversified economy
in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the UAE’s
economy remains extremely reliant on oil. With the
exception of Dubai, most of the UAE is dependent on
oil revenues. Petroleum and natural gas continue to
play a central role in the economy, especially in Abu
Dhabi. More than 85% of the UAE’s economy was
based on the oil exports, While Abu Dhabi and other
UAE emirates have remained relatively conservative
in their approach to diversification, Dubai, which has
far smaller oil reserves, was bolder in its diversification
policy. Oil exports accounted for 77% of the UAE’s
state budget.

Food Processing Sector in UAE
The United Arab Emirates is well known as a poultry
market. The demand for frozen processed chicken
leads the distribution channels in frozen processed
food retail market. The manufacturers have also been
focusing on value added products due to the higher

maximize their revenues. Considering the increase
in health problems in the country, the government
is trying to promote healthier lifestyles. As a result,
consumers are becoming more health conscious and
concerned about their eating habits. In response,
consumers are expected to seek fresher meat,
poultry and fish/seafood as well as low-fat options.
Frozen processed fish/seafood is expected to benefit
due to its high nutrient content, while vegetables
will replace carbohydrates, which will boost sales of
frozen processed vegetables. Frozen processed food
will remain more affordable than fresh produce;
hence, consumers will still be willing to purchase
frozen processed food if lower-fat and organic frozen
processed food items are introduced.

Food Habit/Consumption
Before oil was discovered in the United Arab Emirates
country was a little more than a desert, received
very little outside influence. After the discovery of
oil in the mid-1900s the country "opened up" and
their food changed dramatically. For the most part,
the local population in the U.A.E. eats a diet similar
to the Levantine diet, consisting of meats (but no
pork), dairy, and breads in conjunction with fruits
Graph: Import of Fresh Apple and Oranges in the
or vegetables in various forms, like hummus. Food UAE from the World
consisted mainly of fish, rice, bread, dates, yogurt,
homegrown vegetables, and meat from sheep, goats,
and camels.
Family meal usually consists of fish, rice, meat, and a
vegetable dish. Many Emiratis prefer the traditional
style of eating with the right hand. There are strict
Muslim taboos against pork and alcohol, and meat
must be slaughtered according to the Islamic halal
method.
Today, the U.A.E is an immigrant or foreign worker
destination and each group has arrived with their
own foods consumption habit. The United Arab
Emirates doesn't consume any true staple foods
anymore. Historically their staple foods consisted of
camel’s milk and dates, but due to the globalization
immigrants residing in the country have influenced
to change the traditional food habit significantly.
