I
n AY2013/14, the School of Interactive & Digital Media (SIDM)
sustained its efforts towards the vision of being one of the best
institutions in Asia for Interactive and Digital Media (IDM).
Going global was a key focus. First was the International Games
Concept Challenge, an initiative by SIDM in partnership with Trident
College of IT from Japan and Supinfogame from France, followed
by our successful Medallion of Excellence win at the WorldSkills
Competition held in Leipzig, Germany.
For ay2013/14,

Key Initiatives &
New Developments
International Games Concept
Challenge
In 2013, due to the success
of an earlier competition, a
Memorandum Of Understanding
(MOU) was signed by NYP, Trident
College and Supinfogame, in Japan,
to establish the International
Games Concept Challenge (IGCC)
for another three years. The
initiative creates an international
competition in games concept
and prototype with like-minded
institutions from around the world.
The uniqueness of the IGCC is
that each team must comprise
a mixture of international and
local students from participating
institutions.

MOU with Ogilvy & Mather
SIDM and Ogilvy & Mather signed
a three-year MOU on 1 February
2014 to cooperate in the areas
of internship programmes,
joint-project development and
collaborative mentorship. Up to
four students per quarter will have
the opportunity to go for the threemonth internship.
Renewal of MOU between Rubika
and NYP
The MOU with Supinfocom and
Supinfogame was extended by
another five years in AY2013/14.
The MOU provides for student
exchanges both inbound and
outbound, and for cooperation in
IDM areas such as animation, games
development and design.
Serious Game Project Collaboration
with Windesheim University of
Applied Sciences
SIDM and the Windesheim
University of Applied Sciences, in
the Netherlands, jointly designed
a serious game based on the story
of Odysseus by Homer, revolving
around the theme of intertextuality.

Tie-Ups &
Projects
National Day Parade 2013 Large
Scale LED Display
SIDM has been involved in the
Interactive & Digital Media
National Day Parade (NDP) for the
past three years. For 2013, a segment
entrusted to students was entitled
Reinvent. A group of 16 final year
Motion Graphics & Broadcast Design
students worked closely with the
2013 NDP Show Committee and
creative team to capture the energy
of sports and represented it through
colourful motion graphics and
animation to complement the onstage dance performances.
The Journey: A Voyage Project
Collaboration with MediaCorp
Nearly 30 Animation and Digital
Visual Effects students produced
over 300 special effects shots within
five months for the MediaCorp
production, The Journey: A Voyage.
They worked on scenes that required
special effects like explosions,
artificial storms, crowd simulation
and time travel. They even had to
simulate an amputated leg on one
of the actors and a gory scene of
a decapitated head. To achieve
these effects, they used a variety
of techniques, including motion
capture, matte painting, background
composition.
Students were proud to be credited for
their contributions to the MediaCorp
production, The Journey: A Voyage.
The graphics projected onto a 3D structure at the Nestlé Singapore’s factory.
Realistic Simulation Games at
Navy Open House 2013
Visitors to the Navy Open House
2013 were able to get a realistic
experience of shooting a machine
gun and rifle due to the hard work
of nine students from the Diplomas
in Digital Media Design (Games) and
Digital Entertainment Technology
(Games), who developed an
interactive shooting game titled
Operation Nereus. The game was a
popular draw, creating long queues
at the Navy Open House held from
16 to 19 May 2013 at the Changi
Naval Base. This was the third time
that SIDM was invited to create
simulation games showcased at the
Navy Open House.
Malay Heritage Centre
3D Visual Projection
A total of 15 Motion Graphics
& Broadcast Design students
collaborated with the Malay
Heritage Centre from 24 June to
22 August 2013, to create two
dynamic 3D visual projection
installations on “Nature and
Healing in the Malay World”.
The displays were visually
arresting, and the reception was
positively received.
3D Visual Projection and Animated
Mural Projection for Nestlé Milo
Diploma in Motion Graphics
& Broadcast Design students
were involved in an infographics
video installation for the Nestlé
Singapore’s factory in Jurong. The
educational video focused on the
process of how Milo is produced,
packaged from the factory and
delivered to the consumers.
The visuals are projected onto a
physical 3D structure. The students
also designed an animated mural
which will be projected in the
factory’s holding room for visitors.

Mercy Relief Humanitarian-themed
PC Game
The School collaborated with Mercy
Relief to develop a PC game to help
young audiences understand the
work that the non-governmental
humanitarian charity does. The
game simulates the situations in
which a Mercy Relief team works in
and the efforts that go into helping
communities affected by natural
disaster. The game will be released
to coincide with Mercy Relief’s
10th Anniversary in 2014. This is
the third collaborative project with
Mercy Relief.
Shell Road Safety Web-based Game
A team of nine students created a
web-based game Traffic Guardian in
consultation with the Land Transport
Authority, Ministry of Education,
Singapore Road Safety Council and
the Singapore Traffic Police. The
game educates the young on the
importance of cultivating good road
safety behaviour. It was launched
during the Shell Traffic Games finals
held in August 2013 at the East Coast
Road Safety Community Park.

Fusion 14: Spectrum
More than 300 graduating students
showcased their original productions
at Fusion 14: Spectrum, held from 27
to 29 March 2014 at the Singapore
Expo Hall. From branding concepts
and opening sequences to exhibition
space layouts and the design of each
space, students put together a show
they were proud to call their own,
featuring their best works during
their three years with NYP.
Visitors, including more than 200
industry guests on the opening night,
experienced first-hand an excellent
showcase of creative works, including

Hexlite, SIDM’s first studentdeveloped game for PlayStation®4.
They also witnessed what went on
behind the scenes of some popular
clips, including those from the 2013
National Day Parade, visual effects for
local drama serials like The Journey: A
Voyage, and even homemade indie
games featured in the USA.
Singapore Games Creation

quality for free-to-air television.
Some of these clips were even
selected for international animation
festivals and won several awards.
SIDM Student Day
The annual SIDM Student Day was
held on 12 July 2013. The event
was officially opened by Board
of Governors member and SIDM
Advisory Committee Chairman,
