A Message from the Dean
Dear Cathedral Family,
Our New Year here at Christ Church
Cathedral has gotten off to a big start. On
Saturday, January 10, we celebrated the
ordination of our “Deacon Dan” Wagner to
the priesthood, rolling out Cathedral-style
hospitality for family, friends, and clergy
gathered for that special day in the life of
the Church. I am thankful for the many
loving and gifted volunteers who worked to
make the day both beautiful and joyous.
That same weekend saw the beginning of
Christ Church Cathedral’s new Epiphany
Concert Series, the brainchild of our
talented and energetic organist/choir
master, Christopher Powell. Attendance has
been encouraging, and the programs of the
highest quality, as well as being reflective,
peaceful, and meditative.

Duncan will be with us at noon; yours truly
will celebrate and preach at the 5:30 p.m.

will begin on Wednesday, February 25 at
noon with Holy Eucharist preceding it at
11:30 a.m. in the Chapel. This year we will
also offer a special adult Christian
Formation group meeting on Sundays after
worship: A Journey with Matthew will be
led by Banks Ladd and George Inge. It will
meet in the library. More information on
the book for this group is on page 7.

2015 promises to be a “break-out”
year in the life of Christ Church Cathedral.
We will all need to “show up” and offer
our gifts and labors for the glory of God
and the life of the Church. What a joy and

Thank you, Cathedral Family! Thank
you for being the place where I was
ordained a priest and where I get to work
in a corner of God’s vineyard. You all
were very welcoming to my family and
friends who traveled from various areas in
the southeast to be a part of the service on
January 10. One thing I have learned about
Christ Church is that our parishioners
understand what it means to be the
Cathedral. You “get it” about hosting
ordinations and having a special
relationship with the bishop and diocese.
But you all also understand how to roll up
your sleeves and work on special events,
like my ordination, and I want to say
“thank you” one more time for making the
day a very meaningful and joyful event.
In reflecting about being ordained a
priest, I am reminded of two things, one
what my friend and classmate Alex talked
about in his sermon at my ordination, and
the other what Dean Gibson mentioned in
her sermon that Sunday.
In Alex’s sermon, he talked about
priests being set apart. He said they were
not better than others, but set apart for
service as “doulos,” that is, as slaves. He
reminded me that in all of the work I do
for the church, the ministry is not mine,
but it is Christ’s.
Last Sunday, the Dean said of me in
her sermon, it is not about what I do at the
altar when celebrating the Eucharist. That
Sunday was going to be my first time
celebrating. Instead, it is what the Holy
Spirit will do with our Sacraments. In
other words, the “pressure” was off of me
and placed squarely where it should be—
on God. We had a similar conversation
during the week, but her sermon was good
reinforcement for me and a teaching
moment for us all.
Alex’s and Dean Gibson’s words
spoke to me in that all I that I do, the
ministry is God’s and I am His. I am to
work joyfully in His vineyard, wherever
he sends me. And it is the Holy Spirit who
will do the “heavy lifting” when it comes
to our Sacraments and ministry in general.
I am excited to be here in Mobile at
Christ Church Cathedral. You all are
helping me to be formed as a priest. Y’all
have done this from the very first time I
came to visit last spring. Through our
working together with Christian formation,
youth, worship, pastoral care, and
outreach, we are getting our hands dirty
for Christ and ministry is done for God’s
glory.
Thank you all for an awesome
ordination and for being a wonderful
parish. I am blessed and I will see you all
at church!

Dear Friends,
Merry Christmas and happy
New Year! January is another time
of transition during the liturgical
year. Until the fourth day of this
month, we were still in the
Christmas season, and then we
celebrated the Epiphany of our
Lord. For the remaining weeks, we
observe Sundays after Epiphany as
they eventually transition to Ash
Wednesday and Lent on February
18. During this Epiphany season,
we heard of Christ’s visitation by
the Magi, his baptism, miracles, and
his calling of the disciples.
Epiphany is a time of “aha”
moments – a time of revelation. The
music ministry invites you to jump
right in to this exciting season.
Epiphany is a time of growth,
and we are growing indeed! We
celebrate some new choir members,
as well as, new challenges. Even
though we are already preparing for
Easter, the unique nature of this
season can’t be overlooked. This
season gives us the opportunity to
relax for a bit after Christmas, but
not to turn off our hearts and minds.
Music has the special ability to
transmit a message without coloring
it too specifically. This quality
enables a person to hear a “happy”
or “sad” piece while still having
room to attribute a personal
meaning to it. Perhaps this is one
way in which the Holy Spirit works
through art and music to help us
heal, rejoice, or discern a path in our
lives. Rather than disconnecting
ourselves from this power during
the “aha” season, I hope many of us
will listen with renewed vigor to
what God may be saying through
our services and concerts. Music
has the power to create a mood that

is personal to each listener and yet
universal in certain ways.
Let’s explore the above concept
a bit more. The American
composer, Charles Ives (18741954), was an interesting person.
Even though much of his music has
become an accepted part of the
repertoire nowadays, Ives was
groundbreaking for his time. As a
child, he would sit in a church tower
of his hometown, Danbury,
Connecticut, and listen as marching
bands on different streets play
different tunes in different keys.
This, of course, would have created
a very discordant and jarring effect
for most people. However, Ives
grew to appreciate sounds that were
different from the usual. He once
famously remarked that the ear is
like a muscle; it will gain strength
and breadth with increased attentive
listening. This is very interesting
when applied to sacred music. What
is an underlying personal message
or “take away” in the music on a
given day? If we use our ears
deliberately, we may be surprised at
what we hear!
The Epiphany season calls us to
attentiveness and new life, to
vibrancy and curiosity. What will be
your “aha” moment this year? I
would suggest finding out by
coming to Christ Church and
attending one of our Sunday
services, concerts, Wednesday
Eucharist, or a social event. You
may be surprised by what God says
when we actively, deliberately, and
deeply listen.
Finally, we will come into the
season of Lent in sobering fashion
on Ash Wednesday. I would
strongly encourage everyone to
attend one of our services on that
day—noon and 5:30 p.m. Just as
Jesus left the Jordan river to fast and
pray after hearing the voice of God,
“This is my beloved Son,” we also
should take some time to reflect on
what we have heard. After listening
for the new and unexpected during
Epiphany, we reflect during Lent.
Marked by ashes on Ash
Wednesday, a sign of our mortality,
we begin a long journey toward
Easter, the Resurrection, when we
celebrate being “marked as Christ’s
own for ever” in by Holy Baptism.
We journey from ashes toward the
living water of life everlasting.
During our journey, we encounter
different events and characters
along the way that invite us to test
ourselves and ponder our call more
deeply. In the wilderness, Christ
was tempted and tested as he was
shown the ways in which he could
use the immense power given to
him as God’s Son. We also possess
great power in the knowledge of our
calling as God’s own people.
Our worship will change during
Lent. Our liturgical surroundings of
word and music will perhaps appear
more stark, more like a wilderness.
This is designed to help us focus on
our heritage, our journey, and our
hope. We will use Rite One for our
celebration of the Holy Eucharist,
and its older language at once
connects us with our past even as it
draws us deeper into what our
corporate worship gives us. The
organ will be quieter, but only that
we might better hear the sound of
God’s people singing around us and
that we might meditate more deeply
on the hymn texts. We will offer an
extensive Lenten concert series on
Wednesdays at noon. This series
invites us to continue our pursuit of
God’s voice in art that we might
better understand our epiphanies.
While not every piece on our series
is religious or even Lenten-themed,
there is something there to sustain us
on our way through the wilderness.
Join us on our pilgrimage. This
Cathedral Church is a gateway to a
world where time and place fade
away into the eternal life of God
played out in the story of salvation.

The Very Reverend Edward O’Connor has been the
Dean of Cathedral Parish of St Andrew, Jackson,
Mississippi since March 2007. He holds a Bachelor of
Arts in Political Science from University of Mississippi,
a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy
from University of Southern Mississippi in 1993, and a
Master of Divinity from University of the South earned
in 2001. Edward is married to Deidra; they have three

The Reverend Canon Smith is currently the Canon to
the Ordinary for the Diocese of Missouri, a position he

Florida in 1978, a Master of Divinity from Nashotah
House of Theological Seminary in 1981, and a Doctor
of Ministry in Congregational Development from
Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in 2001. Dan is

The Reverend William C. Treadwell has been the
Rector of St. Paul’s in Waco, Texas since 2004. He

from the School of Theology, University of the South in
1989 and his Doctor of Ministry from School of
Theology, University of the South in 2014. Chuck is

The 44th Annual Convention of the Diocese of the
Central Gulf Coast will be hosted by Trinity Episcopal,
Mobile, from Thursday, February 19 through Saturday,
February 21. The Cathedr al 2015 Convention
Delegates are Harwell Coale, Carolyn Eichold, Bob
Israel, and Rick Mitchell.
The 4th Bishop
of the Diocese
of the Central Gulf Coast
will be elected on
Saturday, February 21.
D i a c o n at e O r d i n at i o n
Ordination to the Diaconate for Six Seminarians
from the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast was held at
Christ Church Cathedral, Mobile on Saturday,
November 22.
Clergy, family and friends of the ordinands
gathered together for the service. The ordinands were
Linda Suzanne Cecelia Borgen, Ashley Burton
Freeman, David Keith Green, Christine Danielle Hord,
Jeffrey Charles Hual, Eric Nathan Mancil. The
sponsoring parishes were: St. Simon’s on the Sound,
Fort Walton Beach, Florida; Holy Spirit, Gulf Shores,
Alabama; Christ Church Parish, Pensacola, Florida;
The Episcopal Church of the Nativity, Dothan,
Alabama. The new deacons will complete their
degrees this spring.
Bishop Duncan was the Celebrant. He was assisted
by The Very Reverend Beverly Findley Gibson, Ph.D.,
Dean of Christ Church Cathedral and The Reverend
Daniel Andrew Wagner the Deacon at the Cathedral.
The Preacher was The Right Reverend James Louis
Jelinek, Eighth Bishop, Episcopal Diocese of
Minnesota, retired.
Many thanks to all of the Cathedral volunteers who
made it such a beautiful day. We especially want to
thank: ECW Chair, Julie McClelland and her team for
the breakfast food and for a lovely reception; our usher
team, chaired by Robby McClure; Edward Ladd for
the beautiful Thanksgiving altar; and the choir under
the direction of Christopher Powell.

What do Episcopalians believe?
Episcopalians believe in a Trinitarian
God (the Father, the Son, and the Holy
Spirit) who created us, redeems us, and
never lets us go. This means that God is
the source of all life, that through the life,
death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ,
our sins are forgiven and our lives are
brought into closer union with God. It
also means that God’s love is present in
the world and with us always. We
believe in the church as the body of
Christ, one that is, catholic (or universal),
and apostolic, continuing the teachings
of Jesus through the Apostles’ Creed,
found in the Book of Common Prayer
and often recited in our liturgy, outline
our beliefs. More specific explanations
of the beliefs of Episcopalians can be
found in the catechism (or outline of
faith) that is also in the Book of
Common Prayer.

Nursery Blessing
During the fall we have been in transition on the campus. The
choir has practiced temporarily in the Huger Meeting Room while the
old choir room and organist/choir master’s office was updated to
house the nursery. The work culminated with a blessing on Sunday,
December 21.
The procession from the Sunday service lead us to the nursery for
a blessing. Sunday hospitality was held in the new nursery, and
everyone helped move toys from the old nursery to the new. The old
basement nursery will become the High School Sunday School and
EYC room.
T h e E p i s c o p a l Yo u t h C o m m u n i t y ( E YC )
Are you ready for some paintball? The Youth will play paintball at
XTREME PAINTBALL on Sunday, January 25. Because we are a church
group, the cost per person is $28.97, but we need at least 8 people to sign
up. The cost covers rental equipment, goggles, CO2, and 500 rounds. The
Youth will leave right after Christian Formation and should bring some
money for a snack. For more information, including completing a waiver,
please contact Canon Wagner and check out Xtreme’s website, http://
www.xpb.us/.
There will be a MARDI GRAS PARTY for the Cathedral Youth on Sunday,
February 8 at 5:30 p.m. (Neptune’s Daughter Parade). Join us for fun,
food, fellowship, and the parade. Youth from St. Paul’s—Daphne and
Trinity will be invited as well. We will need chaperone and cooking
assistance, so please contact Canon Wagner if you would like to help!
YOUTH MYSTERY VISITS
On December 7, our EYC met and visited several Cathedral parishioners
who have been unable to make it to church. Our youth met Alice Carwie
and Billie and Peter van der Giessen. Our parishioners were given Advent
wreathes made by our Sunday School children. The youth listened as our
parishioners told them much about their lives including: serving in World
War II, raising children, and singing professionally in New York City. In
turn, our youth told their stories. Deacon Wagner ended both visits in
prayer and the group finished out the day by enjoying fellowship and
food at Los Rancheros.

We had an array for shepherds and angels who joined the Holy Family
played this year by Livy Ferguson as Mary, Lawson Hamil as Joseph,
and Kit Sledge as baby Jesus.

Corinne Betbeze will be joining us in January to coordinate
our younger children’s programs. She will work with
nursery staff, Sunday School teachers, and Children’s
Chapel leaders to ensure that all needs are met, safe
practices are in place and loving care abounds for children
from nursery age through the second grade. Corinne was a
pre-school and kindergarten teacher at St. Luke’s Episcopal
School here in Mobile for 20 years. Her daughter Morgan is
a graduate of St. Luke’s and is now a sophomore at the
University of South Alabama. Her son J. P. will graduate
from McGill-Toolen this spring and will attend Auburn
University. Please introduce yourself to her as we welcome
her into the Cathedral family.

Sarah Bolt will be serving as coordinator for our older
children’s activities beginning in January. She will work
with Canon Wagner and other Sunday School and group
leaders to plan and supervise opportunities for Christian
formation, fun, and fellowship. A recent graduate of
Millsaps College, Sarah grew up participating in Episcopal
youth activities here in Mobile and in our diocese. She has
also been a Kanuga counselor for many years. A member of
the Cathedral family, Sarah is the daughter of Sage and
Preston Bolt. Please let her know how much we appreciate
her work with our youth.

MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT RATES
The Internal Revenue Service has issued the IRS Standard Mileage Rate for business
travel for 2015. Effective January 1, 2015, the standard mileage rate will be 57.5 cents
for business use of an automobile, 23 cents per mile for medical or moving purposes,
and 14 cents per mile for charitable purposes (note the charitable rate is set by law and
remains unchanged).
