L&T is one of the world’s first companies to implement the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software SAP ECC in hydrocarbon business applications. This integrates all the execution processes for the project and lets the project team access information at all stages – from proposal to project hand-over. Business processes are mapped with IT modules to serve as a backbone to various e-Business applications. SAP along with e-Procurement, MOSS-based Document Management System, Pro-eTrack, KnowNet 2.0, eALPS+ and a customised internet based framework showing a real-time dashboard for senior management is available for well-coordinated decision making actions. Task Force Approach for Project Execution L&T adopts a dedicated task force approach for execution of projects with resources drawn from various capability centres. L&T Hydrocarbon follows a stringent risk-management protocol both at the bidding as well as project execution stage. Planning L&T Hydrocarbon has standardised on Primavera Enterprise software for project planning, scheduling and control. Primavera is integrated with SAP ECC 6.0 resulting in a common work break-down structure in both systems. 60 SAP PLM ERP SAP ECC 6.0 Construction E-ALPS+ Engineering The Project Task Force comprising of multi-disciplinary, high-calibre engineers from our engineering hubs review the engineering inputs provided by the customer / process licensor and prepare a design basis for subsequent engineering work. Interaction through the ERP-SAP package provides instantaneous release of the engineering documents in electronic form. Interfaces of ERP and engineering software are utilised for uploading bills of material. This ensures that collaborative design, engineering and project management bring measurable benefits in terms of reduced cycle time and better service levels. Custom-built software 'P-BOM' bridges the Plant Design System with the ERP system. Plant Design Systems such as PDS and PDMS generate the plant engineering drawings and the bill of material. Unique web-based material codification software is developed and is integrated with ERP. Procurement L&T undertakes procurement services including strategy development, vendor identification, global sourcing, logistics & licensing, quality and other compliances. Continuous widening of vendor base is ensured through structured & comprehensive vendor evaluation, qualification and continuous monitoring. The procurement team is involved at the bidding stage to ensure fast track order placement in strict compliance with contract specifications. e-Procurement has helped in automating purchasing systems and effectively controlling delivery schedules, cost and quality of procurement. e-Procurement includes reverse auction engine, and other functions for effective Supply Chain Management (SCM). The reverse auction function in the e-Procurement system allows short-listed vendors to participate in a virtual negotiation over the internet. This enables L&T to reduce negotiation time and obtain the best price from vendors. In order to get actionable analytical reports from the SAP ECC system, L&T has deployed the SAP Business Warehouse (BW), a business intelligence, online analytical processing software, that takes care of strategic reporting needs and offers flexible and easily accessible reports from SAP ECC and other data sources. SAP BW is characterized by self-service, high-quality business reporting and analysis at all levels and a user-friendly MS Excel front-end. It maintains and updates drawings, purchase orders including their latest amendments. It maintains stores master data covering receipt and issue of materials. It also covers quality management aspects such as test specification maintenance, inspection process and welder master maintenance. It generates various reports such as material usage reports, inspection reports, stock reports, shortage reports and has an MS Excel export feature. L&T Hydrocarbon has developed an in-house application easyTRACK - to track the movement of the material right from the time of the release of the Purchase Order to the stage when the material reaches site. It has built-in functions like expediting, predispatch inspection clearance and dispatch clearance, which enable visibility of the status of the material at any stage. Offshore module being loaded-out from MFF-Hazira SAP implementation at various project locations in India & the Gulf Logistics Management Specialists provide traffic and logistics services for domestic and international customers. The Group has proven capability of performing dynamic simulation of power plants. This powerful analysis tool is being effectively used to verify the Advanced process simulation for gas-processing applications 64 Molten salt-based heat storage & recovery system (patent pending) New Initiatives Focusing on Future Technology Challenges In view of the requirements for specialised engineering studies in most of the current EPC projects the R&D Centre has been taking proactive measures to develop in-house capabilities. As a result of such efforts, capabilities such as acoustic mapping of plant and machinery and flow-induced and acoustic pulsation analysis in process piping have now been established in the area of machinery. These studies enable project teams to take proactive measures in the engineering phase to mitigate the risks of non-conformity with contractual performance parameters and premature equipment failures. Efforts are currently on to develop similar expertise in areas such as analysis of water hammer problems in liquid pipelines, pulsation studies for reciprocating compressors and surge analysis in centrifugal compressors. In the area of structural analysis, R&D is actively engaged in establishing capabilities for composite analysis. This will enable realistic and accurate analysis of complex systems involving steel, concrete and soil structures together with the installed equipment, without resorting to simplifying assumptions. In-house expertise is also being developed in multi-phase flow simulation studies. The R&D Centre has successfully provided technology support to the EPC Projects business over four decades, by leveraging its talent pool, domain expertise and state-of-the-art infrastructure. The R&D services have enabled the business units in choosing the right technology and product, optimising process design / equipment design, solving product or process-related problems and achieving guaranteed performance of the plants. The Centre has been instrumental in providing the competitive advantage, by enabling the execution of large and complex projects within targeted cost, quality and time schedule. The R&D Centre is also actively tracking emerging new technologies in the non-conventional energy sector, such as solar, wind and ocean thermal energy sources. The Chemical Engineering Group is involved in studies related to new energy options, such as gasification, shale gas, coal-bed methane and hydrogen fuel. In view of the increasing focus on subsea and deep-water projects, the Centre is developing in-house capabilities in specialised studies, such as buckling analysis of subsea piping and boat-impact analysis. As major industries are now focusing on improved asset management and life-cycle performance of plants, the Centre has taken proactive steps to acquire expertise in Remaining Life Assessment (RLA), Risk Based Inspection (RBI) and Fitness For Service (FFS) studies.
