21–23 APRIL 2015, LONDON
THE STEPHENSON CONFERENCE RESEARCH FOR RAILWAYS.
In 2015 the Railway Division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers will host
the inaugural Stephenson Conference, dedicated to railway research. This will
be an international event covering the full range of scientific and engineering
disciplines relevant to railways.
It will bring together researchers and industry experts to present, debate and develop their
work. Peer reviewed research papers will be complemented by practical case studies,
illustrating the value which good rail research can bring to the development of the railway
industry.
The conference takes its name from pioneers George and Robert Stephenson, who cofounded the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1847 ‘to give impetus to inventions likely
to be useful to the world’ — an aspiration reflected in the conference.
A further objective of the conference is to bring together academic researchers and
industry representatives to develop an improved understanding of their mutual interests.
The Stephenson Conference social programme will provide an opportunity for relaxed and
friendly discussion away from formal presentations.
A special edition of Part F of the Proceedings of the Institution (the Journal of Rail and Rapid
Transport) is planned which will include the best of the scientific papers and case studies
(subject to normal peer review procedures).
The conference themes will include traditional railway themes (vehicles, track, train control
and their interactions) and also topics related to the whole railway system such as customer
benefit, capacity, reliability and sustainability.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Have you been working on an interesting research topic or developing
new technologies? Why not share your knowledge and experience by
presenting a paper?
The first step is to produce an abstract of your proposed paper. This needs to outline
what you will talk about, in no more than 250 words. Your abstract should be written in
English and include your name, paper title and affiliations.
The deadline for abstracts is 30 April 2014
Please submit your abstract at:
www.imeche.org/stephenson/abstractsubmission
21–23 APRIL 2015, LONDON
NEXT STEPS
The Organising Committee will notify authors from those who submitted abstracts by
6 June 2014 and invite them to submit a draft paper of up to 4,000 words.
The deadline for draft papers is 8 September 2014.
All draft papers submitted will be considered and refereed by two independent reviewers;
final acceptance will depend on the content of the final manuscript and receipt by
1 April 2015.
Authors are required to attend the conference to present their work, and enjoy a
substantially reduced registration fee. However the Institution will not be able to
reimburse any travel or accommodation expenses. All accepted papers will be published
electronically and will be available to all conference delegates.
