Dear Friends:
In a variety of ways and on many different levels, this was an inspirational year at Hospital for Special Care (HSC). Since our last Annual Meeting, we have opened new buildings, pioneered new technologies and have received national recognition for the superior care we provide our patients on a daily basis.
Following many years of planning and fundraising, the Maximilian
E. & Marion O. Hoffman Outpatient Center saw its first patients last May. The $7 million facility not only houses our many clinics and a new Little Store, but it also provides a beautiful new frontage for the hospital. Shortly after the outpatient clinic opened, construction was also finished on our indoor riding arena at Manes
& Motions in Middletown, CT. That $600,000 facility now allows us to operate our therapeutic horse riding program year-round and in just about any weather.
In October, HSC went live with our first Electronic Medical
Record (EMR) system at our Autism Center and throughout our outpatient programs; we are hopeful that with continued support from the State of Connecticut, we will be able to expand EMR to all inpatient units as well in the coming year.
The Autism Center at HSC continued to grow at exponential rates. We started the year by launching our on-line “Spectrum of Kindness” campaign, and we ended the year by celebrating a Program of Promise award from Jackson Healthcare. Most notably, Governor Dannel P. Malloy visited us in March to announce that The Autism Center at HSC was designated as the first patient-centered specialty practice (PCSP) for autism in the country!
To me, the most impressive aspect of our success is that it was achieved amid the most difficult of financial circumstances.
Federal cuts to Medicare and flat-funding of state Medicaid rates have caused us to rethink how we deliver care; but instead of changing our mission, we adapted to these difficult times.
Every member of our Board and every member of our staff was
– and continues to be – committed to running a cost-effective operation, without impacting exceptional quality of care.
This truly was an inspirational year at HSC. Nothing inspires us more, though, than the sustained success of the very people we are all here to serve: our patients. Both on the cover and throughout this annual report, we have highlighted just four of the many thousands of patients we have treated here at HSC. Their stories are each unique, but the inspiration they provide us as caregivers is unquestionably universal.
I would also like to remember Sister Mary Mark Pizzotti, DM, a longtime HSC Board member and friend, who passed away this year. She is missed already by the HSC community.
Thank you all for your friendship and for supporting HSC during the past year!
John J. Votto, DO, FCCP
President & CEO
David Kelly
Chairman of the Board
Dear Friends,
On a recent vacation to Seattle, I was fortunate to visit the Bill &
Melinda Gates Foundation. Inside the visitor center, there is an
African proverb prominently displayed on the wall which reads:
“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
In collecting my thoughts for this message, I felt it was appropriate to reflect on the relevance of this proverb as it pertains to Hospital for Special Care. While HSC is well-positioned as an independent healthcare provider, this in no way means the hospital is “going alone”. Mindful of our mission, the hospital has flourished by working together with stakeholders providing value in programs dealing with the most vulnerable people in the healthcare universe. By engaging our patients, employees and partners, HSC continues to recognize and achieve programmatic growth. While thinking long term, HSC has also displayed the ability to move quickly to address the needs of our community and patient populations as evidenced by the success of newer programs in congestive heart failure, neuromuscular disorders and autism. With our unique continuum of care, it is vital that all our stakeholders remain engaged in supporting the long-term success of our hospital.
This past year, we delivered on a commitment to our employees by fully funding our pension liability. This provides longer-term financial stability and allows us to focus resources on meeting the clinical and market challenges ahead. Our employee engagement continues to thrive as we look at innovative ways to provide more efficient care while all are held accountable for achieving superior patient outcomes and safety. These attributes are the standard that other hospitals, physicians and community groups value when referring patients.
As a leader in long-term healthcare, HSC was recognized positively by the Wall Street Journal for our Medicare discharge practices focusing on patient care. For the second consecutive year, HSC was recognized as a “Top Workplace” by the Hartford
Courant and Fox CT. We take great pride in the superior care provided to our inspirational patients and the tremendous culture embraced by all our dedicated employees.
The Board of Directors and staff of the hospital continue to look at ways to optimize strategy, programs and sustainability. With the culmination of the past year’s major building projects, this year promises to be an exciting year as we present a transparent, compelling case for our programs to all stakeholders.
We have so much to be proud of and so much more to look forward to… and you’re a big part of both. Stay tuned and engaged!
Thank you all for your commitment to the hospital. Together we will go far!
“It’s just not in my DNA to be unhappy or dwell on bad things,” says Elizabeth (Beth) Brady, MD, a renowned Connecticut breast surgeon. Beth helped build Hartford HealthCare’s breast center into one of the busiest in the state. She was a very active surgeon
- until she found herself in an intensive care unit (ICU).
It was a sunny April morning on the driving range, and other than experiencing a little back pain while hitting golf balls she had little warning of what was to come. That night the back pain was so severe she called an ambulance herself to take her to the
Emergency Room.
An MRI showed nothing, but other tests indicated that Beth had contracted communityacquired staphylococcus aureus, most likely from a small cut.
“The infection spread so quickly that it overwhelmed my system, and I had no idea what was about to happen to me. The next thing I remember is waking up in the ICU in a lot of pain. A day or so later, once the antibiotics started to work, my head cleared. It was then that I realized I was paralyzed.
Certainly this is not what I expected, but my reaction was okay, what do I need to do to get better,” Beth said.
It turns out that what Beth had to do would be quite significant.
“I didn’t feel despondent, just impatient. I knew that I had to get to a place that would truly help me, and getting to the right place was essential,” she said. The discharge planner gave her the options, which included HSC.
“I talked to others - including my best friend - who had recently been an inpatient at another long-term specialty hospital in the state,” said Beth. “It didn’t take long for me to realize that I had chosen the right place. My team at HSC started my rehabilitation therapy right away. We were all on the same page. I was at
HSC for one purpose, and that was to get out of there as soon as possible and on with my life.”
Beth said the nights were long, and she just wanted to sleep through so she could rise at 6 am and start therapy right away.
“I think I was a good patient. I respected the job that everyone did
- from my CNA Julia Goncalves who brightened my entire day to my team of occupational and physical therapists Robyn Cop and
Colleen Murphy. I had fun in therapy, and I looked forward to it.
To go without it just one day on the weekend was tough.”
Beth praised her team for always going the extra mile, adding that
“They were great. They hung photos of my dogs to inspire me to work through the pain and brought me on a road trip to be with my best friend BJ who was terminally ill with breast cancer. BJ and I had a wonderful 90-minute visit and talked through a lot of things.
Most important to BJ was that I would be well cared for. BJ and I were like sisters. We took care of each other. Robyn and Colleen assured BJ that they would now look after me.”
Inner Determination
“My inner determination drove me to do more than I actually could do, and I was shocked at what I couldn’t do, such as step into the shower,” Beth explained. She remembers the first time she could walk again, saying that it felt so cool but scary.
“I wanted to do more, but could take only 20 steps. Yet the walking and going outside into the courtyard were signs that my life was there waiting for me. Anything that showed progression just made me more determined.”
Naturally, some days were better than others for Beth.
“Improvement is not a linear thing. You have to listen to your caregivers and family and stay positive. Nobody wants to be with a Debbie Downer! Robyn was remarkably strong and determined to keep me focused; Colleen added an element of fun; Julia is gifted in making you feel better about yourself. After all, there are always people that are worse off than you are,” Beth said.
An Opportunity on the Journey
Beth completed rehabilitation therapy in January 2015 and is back at work. She explained that her illness has given her the opportunity to make a shift in her practice, something that she was struggling to make happen.
“While I still maintain my clinical practice, I have now begun to decrease my patient visits so I can be available to do other things. In essence, I emerged with a clean slate - a chance for a new direction. I can now do more work in training and mentoring young surgeons, enabling us to grow our market share.
The challenges in healthcare today are enormous, and I have the skill set to contribute as a physician leader to positive change.
HSC helped me with my journey. I still have many goals in my recovery, and other patients in the position that I was in need to understand that getting well is a journey. You must begin that journey by understanding that you have a responsibility. You have to demand yourself to be healthy, and your team must be ready to support that.”

Hospital for Special Care, and the community as a whole, lost a wonderful friend and beautiful person when Florence Timura passed away in August, 2014. Florence’s husband of 66 years,
Mike Timura, established The Florence Timura Medical Student
Scholarship in her memory with the single largest individual gift in HSC’s history. This plaque serves as both a fitting tribute to
Florence and a warm greeting to our visitors.
Making a personal gift to Hospital for Special Care is an act of selfless generosity. There are many ways to make a tax-deductible gift to the Hospital during one’s lifetime or after. We encourage you to consult with your attorney, accountant or other financial advisor when considering a gift that may have substantial impact on your finances or estate. Linda Glovna, Director of Development of the Hospital for Special Care Foundation, is also available for a confidential discussion at your convenience. Please call 860.612.6312.
We will ensure exemplary care within our continuum, with the active involvement of those we serve, so that they can achieve enduring improvements in the quality of their lives.
We will anticipate and be responsive to the changing needs of our communities and a changing healthcare environment by creating an innovative, fiscallysound, cost-effective system of care.
We will support the practice of rehabilitation and continuing medical care through research and education.
We will create a work environment and climate where employees are supported to provide excellent care, and find opportunities for personal and professional growth.
We will be, in all of the above, responsive and accountable to our communities, for whose benefit we exist.

Manes & Motions, a member of the HSC community, features the Horses for Heroes program designed for veterans dealing with the lingering effects of service to our country, from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder to recovery from physical injuries. Before this year, the riding program was available only in warm weather; but our new indoor arena makes it possible to continue the program year-round.
Vaughn Evans (pictured on cover) saw combat in
Vietnam and returned to Connecticut where he worked 33 years at Connecticut Light & Power, working his way up to chief lineman. When he retired, he went to the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical
Center in Newington for aftercare and to find a balance in life. Three years ago the VA suggested he give Manes & Motions a try. He had never ridden a horse before; but after the mandatory eight-week class on how to approach and relate to horses he learned “how to be a leader in a herd of two.” He has been riding ever since.
Heather Olney (pictured at right) just started riding in the fall of 2014 as one of the first new riders in the indoor arena. She served in a security role in the
United States Marine Corps in Iraq. She talks about how working with horses helped her recover strength after a shoulder injury while “building back selfconfidence and patience.”
A head-on automobile accident in August of 2012 put Peter Callan’s life on hold and hurled him into a tunnel of darkness and uncertainty.
The accident sent him to a hospital with a broken back, separated shoulder, two broken hips, broken legs, broken ribs and lifethreatening internal bleeding. Up to that point in his life, Peter had never been in a hospital.
“Surreal is the best word for me to describe it. One minute your life is full and busy with family and work, and in a flash things are taken out of your hands. I found myself lying on the pavement, having pulled myself from my car for fear of it catching fire.”
Five surgeries and 10 days later, it was time for him to leave the acute care hospital and begin rehabilitation.
Peter chose HSC for his six-week journey to recovery. “Peter asked me what he needed to do to leave,” said Robyn Cop, Peter’s occupational therapist at HSC. “I told him that he would need to work through the pain, and if he did, his body would respond.
I said, Peter, this is going to hurt a little, but I can’t want this more than you.”
Peter owns and manages Lantern Energy, a successful and growing business that provides homeowners and business-owners with a simple path to energy efficiency. Throughout the latter course of his rehabilitation, Peter’s partner would visit him at HSC and bring him mail. “I was starting to feel a sense of normal,”
Peter said.
Once an avid runner and biker, Peter left HSC in a wheelchair, now long
Jeffrey Yardis, Corporate Images since gone. Robyn and Jenna Murphy, Peter’s physical therapist, accompanied him home to make sure that he could take care of himself. They inspected his house and didn’t leave until they were satisfied Peter would be safe managing on his own.
Although the pain hasn’t gone away even after almost three years since the accident, Peter now says that he has more of a sense of purpose. “Going through what I did really opened my eyes. I have less patience for the nonsense of what’s not important in life, and I have a greater sense of empathy.”
“The surgeons at Hartford Hospital saved my life, but HSC got me home and gave me my life back.”
Inactive, overweight, and a smoker, Jim’s leg went numb from the knee down. He underwent a five-hour surgery to bypass a blocked artery, but during rehab his blood oxygen levels were dangerously low. He was put on oxygen and sent to a pulmonologist at UConn
Health Center who diagnosed him with emphysema, also known as COPD - Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. That’s where his doctor told him of HSC’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation and COPD
Disease Management Program.
Before starting at HSC in May of 2014, Jim was very restricted in what he could do without needing to rest and catch his breath.
Grocery shopping was almost too difficult because of how tired he would get. Jim is now a nonsmoker and lost over 30 pounds in
12 months. He maintains a workout schedule most people would envy: fifty minutes of aerobics followed by fifty minutes of musclestrengthening exercises five days a week. “The program was a godsend, he says. When you can’t catch your breath, you can’t do very much.”
From the start, Jim’s multidisciplinary team of therapists stressed the importance of having an exercise plan, so that he would not lose what he gained during the program.
Working with the multidisciplinary team for seven weeks taught him how he could make an impact on the quality and longevity of his life. Jim took this to heart.
The COPD Disease Management team still follows Jim’s progress and disease state, and will throughout his lifetime. “Stephanie,
Elyse and everyone involved in the HSC pulmonary programs have my utmost gratitude. They educated and provided me the tools and environment I need to get back my life!”
Stefan Pazdzior’s official title at HSC is “Supervisor of Engineering Plant
Operations” but should be “Supervisor, Motivator, Tireless Worker, Daily
Problem Solver and Consummate Professional.” We recognize Stefan for his commitment to quality, his impeccable maintenance of the physical plant and his exemplary delivery of professional customer service, day after day.
Stefan’s knowledge and expertise regarding the construction and operation of the building utility systems, coupled with his active involvement in our recent expansion project, have helped ensure that the new Outpatient Center has fully met, and will continue to meet, the needs of both our patients and our staff. Stefan personifies HSC’s mission and values: caring, integrity and a genuine pursuit of excellence. Congratulations Stefan! Stefan was the employee of the month for March 2014.
