Our new building provides a creative space that challenges us to grow Gibbons into an ever more authentic learning community. Vision A Home for Connections, Collaboration and Creativity The “end” of Building the Vision construction is really just the beginning. Thank you. The completion of Building the Vision’s construction phase is a wonderful opportunity to express our gratitude. We have been blessed with tremendous support for Catholic education, and it is by living out that mission on campus that we best express our gratitude. John F. Kennedy said, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” A visitor recently asked if things will finally slow down on campus once construction is finished. Quite the opposite, I replied. The level of activity at Cardinal Gibbons will continue increasing, because of the tremendous potential of the people in our community. So many teacher programs and classroom innovations, new clubs and Spiritual Life initiatives, and myriad art, athletic and cocurricular opportunities have all been waiting for these new facilities. The best way for our school community to say thank you, is by filling each new space with the spirit and love that is a hallmark of the Gibbons experience. The new spaces are a home for connections, collaboration and creativity. They will allow our students, faculty and families to learn more, create more and dream more, so that we may be formed as faithfilled people of service and leadership. The “end” of Building the Vision construction is really just the beginning, and we are so grateful that you are joining us on this exciting, inspiring journey. 2013-2014 Board of Trustees David Nerz, Chair Richard Derrenbacher, Vice Chair Peter Charland Dr. Mary Kay Delaney Donald “Bo” Hanna, M.D. Fr. At 9 a.m. on a cool Tuesday in February, 31 juniors and seniors pile into a white activity bus and head to their scheduled retreat. While retreats have been a fact of student life at Gibbons for years this one is distinct, expanding the program in an exciting new direction. The bus was headed to St. Thomas More School in Chapel Hill where Gibbons students led a retreat for 125 middle-school aged children - a first for the program. Over the years the voluntary retreat program has grown, with some 550 students - freshmen through seniors as well as alumni - deepening their connection to their faith and to one another through the 14 retreats offered in the 2012-2013 school year. The St. Thomas More retreat focused on character development, self-acceptance and prayer. “It was a great experience of leadership for our students,” says Sr. Laura Downing, associate retreat director. “It was also exciting because it was a tangible experience of taking our school’s mission outside of our immediate community.” Sixth-grader Lilli Oathout, like other St. Thomas More students, initially was nervous about the day-long retreat, but ultimately welcomed the opportunity to participate. “I wasn’t sure what it would be like, but once we started I didn’t want the day to end,” she says. Gibbons Spiritual Life program expanded in yet another way in June. That’s when 25 rising juniors and seniors along with a group of alumnae and faculty members came together for a weekend to talk about faith, discipleship, servant leadership, and how “to bring all these things back to Gibbons,” notes Sr. Laura. The hope? To empower these students and teachers – who will remain anonymous - to take an active role as leaders in the spiritual life at Cardinal Gibbons so they, in turn, may help guide others in the school community on their faith journey. Students have a rich array of opportunities for reflection and discussion about their faith through academics, Masses, student clubs and activities and spiritual life initiatives. In the tradition of educating the whole person, those initiatives help students integrate faith into their daily lives. by the numbers Cardinal Gibbons raises more than $100,000 annually through various initiatives, including the Penny Challenge, Catwalk for Cancer, for local, state and national charities. Cardinal Gibbons faculty and students perform over 100,000 hours of community service each year. As a rising Gibbons junior she traveled last summer with a group of students from Spain to Bucharest, Romania, to volunteer at an orphanage, working with the children and helping to renovate rooms that were in disrepair. “Being able to help these kids who have little to nothing was one of the most amazing experiences,” says Barreto. There’s also Michael Shulby ’13. At an age when most teenagers are mowing lawns, babysitting or working at fast-food restaurants, Shulby, together with his family, last year started the North Carolina Chapter of Project Sunshine. The group provides free educational, recreational, and social programs to children and families living with medical challenges. “From start to finish, the energy of the crowd made the experience even more amazing,” wrote Marisa Casson ‘13, one of a handful of students who shared their impressions about the new pope with the Cardinal Gibbons community. “While waiting in line to rush to find our spot in the square, cheers erupted and people shouted ‘Viva la Papa!’ “ Members of the Gibbons community on this side of the Atlantic were also able to appreciate the excitement, thanks to the photo above. The image of Pope Francis, with the Cardinal Gibbons flag proudly displayed behind him, walking through the reported 250,000 people crammed into St. Peter’s Square during Mass, is one many will long remember. Gibbons graduates present the gifts to Bishop Michael F. Burbidge at the 2013 Baccalaureate Mass. For his first effort Shulby volunteered in the children’s playroom at UNC Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill. This summer, his chapter launched Sending Sunshine, which provides the hospital with crafts kits – about 200 kits quarterly – that Shulby and his family assemble and deliver to the hospital. “It is,” says Shulby, “a great feeling to help these children and their families feel better, if only for a short time.” Student Receives communion at an all-school mass. 6 C a rd i n a l G i b b o n s H i g h S c h o o l Read more about Spiritual Life at Cardinal Gibbons at www.cghsnc.org/spirituallife Academics The Path Forward Cardinal Gibbons expands students’ opportunities to succeed through innovative partnerships between academics and technology and between internships and business. You don’t see the thousands of feet of wire and fiber optic cable that snake just above the ceiling tiles into server rooms and equipment closets like stacks of uncooked spaghetti. But it soon becomes clear that those neat stacks, installed this summer, set the foundation for technology-enhanced teaching and learning at Cardinal Gibbons in the 21st century and beyond. The $500,000 project is the essential first step in providing updated educational technology – from increased bandwidth to a school-wide wired and wireless connection network and communication system – needed to support the modern classroom, including a one-to-one computing initiative. The initiative pushed ahead last year thanks to the addition of a new technology director and to the completion of the Building the Vision project. The new spaces are a home for connections, collaborations, and creativity. 2012-2013 Annual Report 7 Academics by the numbers The Class of 2013 received over $11 million in academic and athletic scholarships. Nearly 100 percent of this year’s 213 graduates will attend college. Six seniors will attend military academies – three will go to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, one will go to the U.S. Military Academy Prep School, one will go to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and one will go to the U.S Marine Corp. Science teacher Diane Ripollone with students in one of her Earth Science Honors classes. Moving forward Gibbons, as in so many of its initiatives, breaks from the pack in its approach to integrating technology with education. Instead of choosing the technology - from laptops to tablets and iPads - and fitting the teaching and learning program to it, Gibbons is reversing the order. In the 2013-2014 school year a group of teachers, students and administrators will devise a technology-fueled teaching and learning program tailored to Gibbons, which will then be linked to the technology of choice, Technology Director Lesley Coe says. “That does not mean,” she stresses, “that the technology will replace teaching; rather it is another tool for teachers to use.” Even before the one- to- one computing initiative begins, Gibbons teachers embraced such available technology tools as Google Docs/Drive, Twitter, as well as screen casting software, data collection devices, and Web-based simulations to enhance the classroom experience. That experience Students collaborate to solve a problem in Forensics class. 8 C a rd i n a l G i b b o n s H i g h S c h o o l Students work at computers to connect, collaborate and create. continues to focus not only on enhancing all subjects, including the core curriculum, but also on incorporating innovation and creativity as is the Gibbons tradition. English teacher Tracey Cole, for instance, uses Google/Docs Drive in student assignments, enabling multiple students to work together simultaneously on a single file. About the oneto-one initiative she says: “It will give Gibbons students an advantage over their peers in college and beyond by training them to be independent, inquisitive, and lifelong intrinsic learners...” Angie Melcher, who teaches physics, agrees and adds: “I think about the connections that can be made … and the higher level thinking that can be achieved when students are able to collect more data to evaluate relationships in labs and to create videos and screencasts.” Along with the one-to-one program, Gibbons last year introduced the Cardinal Gibbons Summer Internship Program, an initiative under the Technology Director Lesley Coe works with students and Cisco volunteers. To that end, the internship program provides career and workplace experience to students contemplating their college majors and career paths. The added bonus is that some of the businesses are owned and/or operated by Gibbons parents, alumni or parents of alumni – strengthening the ties that bind those groups to our school. This summer the alliance placed its first group of ten interns (current students and alumni) with seven businesses, including Subway and Kangaroo Express. The interns performed such tasks as maintaining a company’s web and social media sites, assisting with special projects and performing public relations and marketing support. The technology and internship initiatives enrich our college preparatory curriculum by providing students with experiences they likely will face in college, Principal Jason D. Curtis says. At the same time, he notes, Gibbons offers students in area Catholic middle schools experiences they will encounter as high school freshmen. Combined, these initiatives expand the education opportunities Gibbons provides – all the while enabling our students to learn and grow as tomorrow’s mentors and leaders. Larry McAnallen, volunteer leader of the summer internship program, says the inspiration for it is primarily tied to the school’s mission to create men and women of faith, service, and leadership in church and community. The alliance, he adds, expands the “community” side of that equation and complements such service efforts as Habitat for Humanity. The internship program will accomplish a number of things. oIt will expand Gibbons presence in the community while enhancing the school’s “college preparatory” curriculum by involving high school students in internships. o Today, an internship experience is increasingly important to college graduates looking for work. Having one or more internships is becoming the norm. o In the near future we envision high school internships will be a great tie breaker for job seekers with college degrees and may even improve students’ college placement opportunities. Irish dance students perform on a portable stage. And studentmusicians entertain patrons during intermission of a theatre production. One day in March, however, the lobby was more crowded than usual. That morning the doors opened wide and in raced over 65 middle-school students who came for a day of theatre. They by the numbers were not disappointed. Why? The reason is simple: at Cardinal Gibbons the arts have always been central to our commitment to learning, teaching, and serving; and to our continued growth as a community. In turn, there are numerous opportunities for students to share their gifts and artistic expression. Whether it’s performing in a drama, musical or dance production, singing at Mass, mentoring younger students or assisting the elderly, the arts are a vital part of the lives of our students. They also help students to gain such life skills as self-discipline, teamwork, and leadership and to grow as servant leaders. “As a dancer,” notes Sarah Reynolds ’13, “the program has opened my eyes to different teachers and students, all touching and inspiring me to try new things.... As a person … it has enabled me to discover who I am and become an independent young woman…” More than 900 of our students are involved in some way with the arts at Cardinal Gibbons. Thirty-six student-artists received regional gold or silver key awards from the Scholastic Art Association; three of our students were also recognized as national gold or silver honorees. Rebecca Dason, chair of the Fine Arts department at Gibbons, said of the awards, “It is exciting to observe the art students’ dedication to excellence and creativity.” That kind of help is critical in the fine arts program at Gibbons which requires time, commitment, perseverance and teamwork. Combs, an accomplished flutist, also traveled to France this summer to perform with the Triangle Youth Philharmonic Wind Quintet on a ten-day tour. To be sure, students’ commitment to the arts stem from the example set by faculty members who infuse energy into the learning process. For Gibbons Drama, that process is grounded in the idea that the craft of theatre is best experienced through doing, notes Kevin Ferguson, the department’s artistic director. It is about faith, tradition, teamwork, leadership and education. It is about a legacy of excellence and success. More than 20 student-athletes gathered on the football field early one Saturday morning in June ready for action. They were there not to compete against players from a rival school; but to assist with the 2013 Special Olympics summer games, which Cardinal Gibbons was hosting for the first time later that day. It was, the volunteers agree, a rewarding day of outreach and service. Such days have long been a tradition and a defining part of being a student-athlete at Cardinal Gibbons. Examples abound: our athletes serve as pallbearers at funerals for people they’ve never met; and they volunteer at Habitat for Humanity Gibbons student-athletes assist with the 2013 Special Olympics summer games. 2012-2013 Annual Report 15 and at Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen. Athletic Director Todd Schuler says adding the Special Olympics to that list expands the program’s outreach efforts deeper in the community. Morgan Nicole Reid ‘14 Lawrence Adebayo taiwo ‘14 Student-Athletes of the Year While at Cardinal Gibbons varsity soccer player Lawrence Adebayo Taiwo ’14 and varsity soccer and basketball player Morgan Nicole Reid ’14, have been showered with numerous accolades. Now, they have each captured yet another award, Student-Athlete of the Year. The two juniors were honored at the Athletic Awards dinner last May. They were chosen for the award from among eight finalists, nominated by head varsity coaches. The other finalists, also recognized at the dinner, were: James Daniel Dorsett ’13, lacrosse; Robert Quayle Kelly ’14, tennis; Bailey Thomas Maloney ’13, swimming; MaryGrace Elizabeth Doggett ’14, cross country & track & field; Lane Klein Huger ‘13, field hockey, basketball, lacrosse; and Haleigh Jane Nelson, volleyball. In addition, two of those finalists, Maloney and Nelson, received career achievement awards, new this year, “to recognize some unique accomplishments of two of our seniors,” said Athletic Director Todd Schuler. Those efforts also extend to area Catholic middle schools. Each sports season, those schools compete in regular season, conference championship and/or all-star contests at Cardinal Gibbons. To many of the Gibbons athletes and their younger counterparts these experiences are about more than just the thrill of the game. Schuler says there are plans to enhance outreach efforts to Catholic middle school students by offering clinics at those schools. There are also plans to find additional opportunities to serve the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA), like hosting more championship meets and bringing in affiliated or outside groups, like Special Olympics, and increasing the number of Gibbons students involved in athletics. The goal, he explains, is to increase participation, now at over 75 percent, to 100 percent. Helping that goal, he notes, are the new athletics facilities, including an auxiliary gym and expanded weight room that opened in January. The reason increasing participation is important, Schuler explains, is that “athletics are such a huge part of Catholic education, which looks to educate the whole person – spiritually, physically, emotionally and intellectually.” That commitment begins in the classroom. This year, in another first for the program, all 25 of Gibbons varsity teams earned the distinction of Scholar-Athletes from the NCHSAA by attaining a 3.1 aggregate GPA for the semester in which the team competed. No easy accomplishment. Consider, for instance scholar-athlete Morgan Reid ’14. All six of the rising seniors who were nominated for male and female athletes of the year have earned college scholarships. They are also among the 35 student-athletes, who will continue to play in college. 2012 State Champions – 3-A Women’s Volleyball by the numbers More than 800 students are involved in athletics in some way. Gibbons won six 3A state championships in the following sports: men’s and women’s cross country, volleyball, men’s swimming and diving, women’s soccer and men’s tennis. 2013 State Champions – 3-A Women’s Soccer Cardinal Gibbons fields 42 teams, from varsity and junior varsity to freshman and club. 2012 State Champions – 3-A Men’s Dual Team Tennis As a student-athlete Morgan says the most important lesson she has learned “is the strength of teamwork.” Over the years that teamwork has produced countless awards. In the 2012-2013 academic year alone, Cardinal Gibbons secured its 12th Wachovia/Wells Fargo Cup for all-around sports excellence since 2000 and won six, 3A state championship titles. But it is more than these awards that student-athletes remember when they leave Cardinal Gibbons. They take with them the meaning of sportsmanship, of commitment, of leadership, and of the importance of faith and prayer. 2013 State Champions – 3-A Men’s Swimming and Diving That is why each team before the start of each game embraces the silence and prays. “Our mindset wouldn’t be the same without prayer,” says Reid. “We play to make God as well as our school proud...” Read more about athletics at Cardinal Gibbons at www.cghsnc.org/athletics 2012 State Champions – 3-A Men’s and Women’s Cross Country 2012-2013 Annual Report 17 Cardinal Gibbons Fund Thank you to the 2012-2013 Cardinal Gibbons Fund Leaders The Gibbons Experience Lasts a Lifetime 2012-2013 Cardinal Gibbons Fund Leaders Chairs, 2013 senior class: Dr. David and Mary Ellen Mottola PAST CHAIRS, CLASS OF 2011: Larry and Paula McAnallen PAST CHAIR, CLASS OF 2012: Mary Ann Enzweiler 2014 JUNIOR CLASS: John and Celia Fisher 2015 sophomore CLASS: Dick and Joe Ann Wright Dear Parents, Families, Alumni, Faculty and Staff, As highlighted at the beginning of the annual fund campaign, we need help from all our families to bridge the gap between what is actually needed to operate a topnotch school and the school’s annual operating costs. Alumni Return Home to Ensure Our Mission Thrives Alumni spanning the 1980s meet for a charity polo match in Raleigh. 22 C a rd i n a l G i b b o n s H i g h S c h o o l Many different elements from the former Western Blvd. campus were preserved and reused on the Edwards Mill campus. When alumni return to campus a common refrain they hear is Welcome Home. While their home has been renovated and expanded, thanks to the Building the Vision project, it has embraced keepsakes from its past, like the floor and ceiling beams of the Fr. Price gym on the old Western Blvd. campus. With the new additions, however, come new opportunities for alumni to stay close to their alma mater. Whether it is volunteering at events, chairing reunions or attending athletic or arts events, that shared history – then and now – is the bond that links generations of Crusaders to Cardinal Gibbons and beckons them to return home.
