Cycling has certainly kept me busy at work first for
the last few weeks first is was the TDF with Mark
Cavandish’s four stage wins and explaining why he
will not be wearing the yellow Jersey. And this was
followed by 2 weeks of having to explain the finer
points of track racing every thing from why track
bikes do not use brakes to why sprinters play cat
and mouse at the start and there is the Madison!!!
But in all seriousness it has raised the profile of our
sport and I am sure this will manifest itself in many
ways including new entrants at all levels.

West London Cycling Association
Report of the Tour of Wessex 2008
from Martin Sigrist:
As well as the Giro, May is also the month for tours a bit
closer to home, with the Tour of Ireland at the start of the
month and the Tour of Wessex taking place over the late May
bank holiday weekend.
The Tour of Wessex is probably the toughest event on the
mainland UK's sportive calendar. It runs over three days and,
while each day can be ridden standalone, the challenge for
many is to take on the option of riding all 3 days back to back
which entails riding some 335miles and a fair amount of
climbing.
Though billed as a "Tour" the start point for each day's ride is
the same, from Castle Cary on the Somerset/Dorset border.
Saturdays route (95+ miles, 2300m climbing) takes you east,
then north from this point with a short but sharp 20%+ climb
up "Alfreds Tower" after just 10 miles with two largish
climbs, one from out of Wells, the other to the top of the
Cheddar Gorge before the 60 mile mark is reached. Highlight
of the day is probably the descent following the last climb
which takes you at breakneck speed down the Gorge, though
maximum care is needed to avoid the sightseers. The last 20
miles should be a nice easy time-trial on flat deserted roads to
the finish. Unfortunately the traditional bank holiday weather
is another factor that makes the Wessex tough, this year
though the promised daily rain did not fall Sat/Sun we did
have a 25mph headwind in our faces which definitely made it
a trial where we took our time...this took its toll on the riders
with just 13 of the 800 starters hitting gold standard. Sadly I
was not one of them missing out by 6 minutes (made the
mistake of believing the advertised course distance, so set a
target pace that got me to the published 95 miles with time to
spare only to find there were another 3 miles to go, all into the
wind and the last one uphill as well....)
Sunday (105 miles, 2300m) we were again lucky in that the
forecast rain once again stayed away and, while the wind kept
blowing from the east, we headed south to the sea near
Weymouth. This is probably the most picturesque day of the
tour, the route down to the coast giving you chance to admire
the Cerne Abbas giant (which is a good time to grab breath as
an evil climb kicks up shortly after), then its down the Piddle
valley to the coast and a very scenic ride across the military
ranges, with views out to sea, to Corfe Castle. This has one
steep climb but its the last tough one of the day with just a
gradual drag climb midway up the route home following.
Thereafter it's over rolling countryside, similar to here abouts.
Golds were no more common than Saturday, just 5 being
awarded out of 425 starters. Again sadly I was not amongst
them, firstly missing a turning and then my faithful Roubaix
(more accurately its Ultegra shifters) giving out on me on the
way back leaving me very short on gears.
Monday's route, at 130 miles. 3000m climbing was to be the
hardest of the three tour days. It went west to a series of 3
sharp steep climbs in the Quantocks, along the coast from
Minehaed then onto Exmoor for the main climb of the tour up
Dunkery Beacon over 400m up. Sadly the weather finally
came in force, with torrential rain being added to winds that
were getting stronger. Having to stop on the road on the way
to the event in the morning and clear a fallen tree was not a
good sign and I (along with just about everyone else who had
not stayed in bed) was not too saddened to find Exmoor had
been struck from the route so we were "just" left with 95 mile
ride to the Quantocks and back. The wind helped on the initial
ride out, while once in the Quantocks the ride became a
mixture of road and mountain biking as several of the roads
had turned into rivers and those that had not had were covered
in mud and stone. The ride back, into the wind, was quite a
test but nonetheless 120 (of the 160 that started and 400+ that
entered) managed to make it. I was one of the lucky ones who
managed to get around without incident. A friend also riding
the route had less luck, getting three punctures but only
having 2 spare tubes (saved by a passer by after a half hour in
the rain) and then having a spoke break. Still he made it back.
Think he and everybody who finished deserved gold, though
due to route changes don’t think any were officially given.
The weather took its toll of the number who managed the full
tour, with just 97 of us making it through. Somehow I was 5th
on overall time (but think the times last day were a bit hit and
miss).
I returned to my hotel (Eastbury in Sherborne, highly
recommended, restaurant of which is probably be the best I
have been to in the UK, not necessarily a good thing if you are
planning to cycle hard but worth the risk) for a warm bath and
made a booking for next year. By then will have moved up an
age category giving me an extra 15 minutes each day so will
aim to get some golds, bike and weather conditions
permitting.

Fine conditions produce fast 10 mile times : (Posted on 6
Jul 08) Excellent conditions produced a clutch of good times
in the 10 mile time trial on the A4 east of Newbury on
Wednesday July 2nd. The strong wind that has affected
several recent events was mercifully absent, and the cool
sunny conditions were a great relief. Tristan Davenne (PCA
Cycling for Everyone
Ciclos Uno) led the field home in 21 mins 32 seconds, with
home rider Ian Reece following him home in 21 mins 59
seconds. All sixteen riders that took part (thus avoiding TV
coverage of another British defeat in the tennis) beat the half
hour mark, with personal bests being set by Marcus van
Heerden and Jenny Tomkins.

Newbury Road Club 50 Mile Championship
(Posted 20 Jul 08)
West London Cycling Association 50 mile Time Trial – A4
Aldermaston
Newbury Road Club used the West London CA 50 mile time
trial on Sunday morning for their club championships.
Although conditions looked fair for the 7am start as the event
progressed the north westerly wind gathered strength
hampering rider’s progress at the Thatcham end of the course.
Chasing the club silverware were 4 club riders in the field of
50. Favourite for the championship Ian Greenstreet
comfortably lived up to expectations recording 1hr 58m 13s
and taking second place in the event overall. Second of the
Newbury riders was Ian Lakey in 2h 8m 26s followed home
by Cliff Voller in 2h 11m 00s. Fourth of the Newbury riders
was Ray Wilson in 2h 22m 06s. Greenstreet also took the 50
mile handicap trophy. The event was won by Justyn Cannon
from the RAF who finished with 1h 57m 20s less that 1
minute ahead of Greenstreet.

10 Mile Club Championships : (Posted on 6 Aug 08)
Newbury Road Club’s 10 mile Club Championships saw one
of the biggest turnouts of the year as 32 riders took to the line
on Wednesday evening. In light of the recent weather, riders
were spoilt by the window of fine weather with conditions
almost perfect for the championship challengers. Rain
returned within an hour of the event finishing! With little to
hamper riders, it was pedal to the metal and there were no
surprises among the top places. Both of Newbury’s top riders,
Ian Greenstreet and Ian Reece finished in the top two places
respectively recording course best times of 21m 25s and 22m
06s, crowning Greenstreet as the 2008 champion. Bronze
position went to Ian Lakey a further minute back. In the ladies
event Elaine Pye was a comfortable winner in 27m 49s more
than a minute ahead of rivals Sara Bartlett and Sue Burnay.

Newbury Trio Ride Reading 25 : (Posted on 18 Aug 08)
Reading CC held their annual 25 mile time trial on the A4 at
Aldermaston on Sunday morning. Once again the overnight
heavy rain affected the numbers with riders anticipating poor
conditions and opting for a lie in. However for those that took
to the line the conditions were fair although there was some
remaining surface water and a strong westerly breeze
strengthened as the event progressed. Newbury fielded 3
riders in the event, Arthur Frost put in a season’s best ride to
finish with 1h 32m 27s. Best of the Newbury riders was Ian
Greenstreet finishing in 56m 35s, while Ian Lakey dipped
under the hour mark with 59m 35s. Event winner was Oxford
based Arctic rider Danny Axford in 52m 35s.

Silver Medals at National Masters : (Posted on 8 Jul 08)
Ian Greenstreet of Newbury RC, won three silver medals
at the National Masters Track Championships held at the
Newport International Velodrome at the weekend.
Having narrowly missed being in the medals by 0.2 sec
in the 750m Time Trial on Saturday morning, he then
went on to improve this result by finishing second in the
15 Km scratch race after lapping the field in the break
and then out sprinting all but one of the lead group.
There was an early start on Sunday morning for the
3000m individual pursuit. With an early heat the
Newbury rider set a time of 3:40.5 reducing his PB by 6
seconds, a time which would prove good enough for
Silver. The final event was the 20 Km points race, with a
strong start he gained a lap on the field to get 20 points
on the board and then continued to pick up points in the
sprints including the final sprint. The score board
indicated the rider in the gold medal position,
unfortunately an early mistake in awarding the points
meant that the final revised total would once again put
Greenstreet in the silver medal position. Although
frustrating a very successful weekend racing in a highly
competitive field ahead of the European championships
to be held in Manchester later this month.
For the those that want to keep some speed going
during gthe Winter. The turbo sessions start again on
Wednesday November 6th. At the Thornford Park
Athletic Track Pavilion Start time 18:45 for 19:00

Bronze Medal in European Masters Track
Championships
Ian Greenstreet from Newbury RC competed for Great
Britain in the European Masters Track Championships
held at Manchester Velodrome. Following up on the
success of 3 silver medals in the National
championships held at the beginning of July,
Greenstreet had maintained his form and having
finished in the top 4 for the 3000m pursuit qualification
round, the Newbury rider went one better in a
tough final to secure the Bronze medal. This was a
welcome result having narrowly missed a medal place in
the time trial and points race earlier in the
championship.
