Accessing the CDes Class Folders
Requirements
These instructions assume that your computer is connected to the University network. Please see the
Notes section at the end of the document for information regarding connecting using the wireless
network or connecting from off-campus.
From the CDes labs
CDes IT recommends students connect to the class folders from the CDes labs.
In the PC labs, all you need to do is logon to the computer. You should see an S: drive under My
Computer or Windows Explorer.
In the Mac labs, click on the Go menu and choose Connect to Server. Choose
“smb://files.umn.edu/CDes/CLASSES” from the Server Address field and click Connect. If prompted,
enter your Internet ID (X.500 name) and password. The class folder(s) will appear as a network drive in
any Finder window.
From a non-University Windows PC
Please note that CDes IT does not support connecting to the class folders from non-University
computers. These instructions are offered as a service to the user. If you need assistance, please
contact 1-HELP.
To access the class folder storage space:
1. Windows Vista/7 users should click the Start Menu, go to All Programs, go to Accessories, and
click Run. For Windows XP users, click on the “Start” menu and then click on “Run”. For all
versions of Windows, a short-cut is to hold down the Windows key and press “r”.
2. In the dialog box that pops up, type \\files.umn.edu\CDes\CLASSES and press the “Enter” key.
Caution: copying and pasting this address sometimes inserts spaces into the address, which will
cause the connection to fail.
3. You will be prompted for a login and password. For the username type in your Internet ID (X.500
name) followed by @ad.umn.edu. For example, anyid001@ad.umn.edu is a valid format for the
username. Substitute your Internet ID for anyid001. The password is the same one you use to
login to e-mail and other services at the U.
4. A new explorer window will come up after you authenticate and you will see the class folders.
You will only be able to access folders for classes that you are enrolled in.
5. (optional) You can create a desktop shortcut to your class folder by right-clicking on the class
folder, choosing Send To, and choosing Desktop (create shortcut).

Notes
Both Mac and Windows users will only have access on campus using these instructions. The university
requires special steps to connect from off-campus. Access from your home network is possible but it is
more complicated to set up. You will have to connect to the university VPN before attempting the above
instructions. VPN instructions and more information are available on the university’s VPN site.
If you have trouble, please contact 1-HELP.
