FEDERATION SPONSORS TV FILM
O N LOS ANGELES JEWISH LIFE
LOS ANGELES (JTA) — A one-hour television documentary about Jewish life in Los Angeles,
'A Journey of Love", commissioned by the United
Jewish Welfare Fund executive committee and nor
rated by TV star Lome Greene, will be telecast
on KTTV on March 29. The documentary was
approved by the Los Angeles Jewish Federation
Council Board of Directors.
^^A^Jovmey^SiHrOve " has several functions,
safal-Rtcnard Weiss, Federation-Council vicepresident and-chotrnTan of its public information
committee, who served with UJFW 1981 general
chairwoman Dorothy Goren.
Weiss said "we commissioned Jack Kaufman,
winner of Emmy and Peabody awards, to document
the Jewish community's sense of neighborhood, its
wealth of personalities and perhaps, most importantly, its opportunities for community participatior
He said "with such a film we can reach out to
our unaffiliated Jewish neighbors and welcome
them Into full community participation. " He odde
"we have an exceptional vehicle with which toed
ucate our children about the many paths of Jewish
V
life."
He described the documentary as a "moving
montage" of Jewish expressions, "each unique, eac i
decidedly Los Angeleno in style." Among the
characters and events portrayed in the film are
a 99-year-old volunteer at a senior citizens center; a jubilant Hasidic-style wedding; a worker on
the Kosher Meals on Wheels program; a Passover
sedar in a Falasha settlement; a Kol Nidre service
at the Synagogue for the Deaf; and a Vietnamese
"boat" family sharing the Sabbath with its sponsoring Jewish family.
Also shown are a discount produce market for
senior citizens; and discussions with a mother
whose son wandered in and was rescued from a religious cult. Weiss summed up the documentary as
"a real people-to-people show." Kaufman, a 25year veteran of the TV industry, wrote, directed
and produced "A Journey of Love. "
