Screening Report Assignment Over the course of the term you will be required to submit two screening reports of 750-‐1000 words in length, due March 7th and April 5th. For each report you will take one of the supplemental screenings as your topic of analysis. You may either write on a supplemental film shown in our dedicated screening on Wednesdays or choose one of the suggested supplemental screenings I have provided and view it on your own. The goal of your reports is to relate the film you analyze to course readings, lectures, and other films screened. The reports should not be structured as a film review (i.e. “I loved it/ I hated it because…) nor should it consist of plot summary. Rather, using one or more of the five approaches to film history listed in the course syllabus you may discuss a particular scene in the film or a specific element of the film: cinematography, sound, mise-‐en-‐scene, etc. You may also consider the film’s themes, its production history, or situate the work within its historical context. Most importantly, you must incorporate class readings, lectures, and screenings into your analysis. In other words, you must put the film in dialogue with that week’s (and/or earlier weeks’) class materials. You might consider such questions as: Does the film contrast with or contradict arguments offered in class readings and lectures? How might you add to or nuance such arguments in relation to the film? What new historical questions or approaches might you take up in performance such an analysis? How does the film complicate our understanding of a particular period in film history or particular film movement? Rather than submit your posts to me in hardcopy form, you will post them on Blackboard so that you can read each other’s work. (See next page) The two screening reports will count toward 20% of your final grade. *Extra Credit Opportunity* As I want to encourage all of you to view as many of the supplemental screenings as possible, a third report submitted beyond the required two will be counted for extra credit.
