Editorial
As most of you
reading this
column would
be aware by
now, I have
taken the
decision to step
down as CEO of
the NFL to undertake a new position
within the football industry.
I have accepted the role of Regional
General Manager of AFL South-East
and will depart from my role here
on October 29. The search is now
on in earnest to find a replacement
and one that will no doubt take the
league to bigger and better things
over the upcoming seasons.
The position of CEO of a league
with the size and diversity as the
NFL is a challenging one and it is
that aspect that I have thoroughly
enjoyed. This role is never going
to win you a popularity contest,
however every decision is made in
the best interests of the league and
to make the league a better place to
play, volunteer, umpire, support or
sponsor. The NFL’s brand has never
been stronger and for that all clubs
can be justly proud.
Last weekend, one of the longest
droughts in football was broken
when Panton Hill claimed its first
senior premiership flag since 1955
in the Division 3 decider against
Watsonia. I must say the whole
day was one of the most enjoyable
days I have had at the football in
quite some time. An exceptional
standard of football played in an
uncompromising yet fair manner, a
see-sawing contest and an admirable
level of respect shown in both victory
and defeat highlighted the day. Well
done to both clubs on the setting the
example for how Grand Finals should
be won and lost.
This weekend’s focus turns to the
Division 2 decider on Saturday,
THE NORTHERNER
the Division 1 preliminary final
on Sunday and the netball Grand
Finals on Friday night. Fitzroy
Stars now have the opportunity
to create history as they play for
their club’s first flag since joining
our competition in 2008. The Stars
have been a terrific inclusion to the
competition and their indigenous
focus adds to the enormous
diversity this league possesses.
Whittlesea has the chance to
bounce straight back into the top
flight after the pain of relegation
in 2012 and with all three grades
represented on Grand Final day,
Plenty Rd should see a steady
stream of supporters making the
trek to Preston.
Parade College will host our netball
Grand Finals on Friday night and
what another outstanding season
of netball this year has produced.
2014 will see some quite significant
changes with the creation of the
Northern Netball League, including
junior competitions, representative
netball, new clubs and a new
venue. I must congratulate
Delwyn Berry for the tremendous
amount of work she puts into the
management of NFL netball and
also the support she receives from
Sue Drummond.
Groundhog Day visits the
Division 1 preliminary Final when
Bundoora and Northcote Park
meet. Can Northcote Park emulate
the previously unthinkable
achievement of winning from
fourth position again in 2013? Well,
a talented Bundoora outfit who
arguably should have already taken
the first Grand Final spot will have
something to say about that. A
salivating contest awaits.

BOURKE RESIGNS AS CEO
Northern Football League chief executive Jeremy
Bourke has announced his resignation after
accepting a new role within the football industry.
Bourke will take on the role of Regional General
Manager under the newly created AFL South-East
Commission.
In an email sent to clubs informing of the news,
Bourke described his three seasons with the league
as an honour.
“The role of CEO has afforded me the opportunity to
deal and interact with the quality individuals that drive
NFL clubs,” Bourke said.
“The search would now begin to find a replacement to
take the league to new heights.”
Under his stewardship, the league implemented a new
strategic plan, undertook some significant initiatives
and was able to procure a suite of new partners.
The league has continued on a trend of yearly growth
and now has one of the strongest competitive balances
across all divisions in metropolitan football.
Bourke’s focus on building the NFL brand centred on
maintaining behavioural standards, ensuring all clubs
maintained a strong community focus and for the
league to establish long-term partnerships with other
reputable, well-known brands.
Bourke will end his tenure with the league on October
29 before commencing with the new Commission on
November 11.
The league is expected to advertise the CEO position
shortly.

REDBACKS CLAIM GRAND FINAL THRILLER
by Doug Long
Panton Hill broke a 58-year premiership drought by
the narrowest of margins against a tenacious Watsonia
outfit at Epping Recreation Reserve.
In an entertaining Division 3 Grand Final that thrilled
the large crowd in attendance, the Redbacks prevailed
13.9 (87) to 13.8 (86) to claim their first flag since 1955 –
when competing in the Panton Hill Football League.
Having won its previous 11 matches heading into the
Grand Final, the Redbacks were warm favourites and
the match appeared to be going according to the script
in the first term.
Although going too wide when entering their forward
50m, they seemed to be controlling the game.
Abe Williams, winner of the best on ground medal,
kicked two of his three goals early on to help the
Redbacks get their noses in front.
On three occasions during the day, the Redbacks
pushed out to more than a two-goal lead, only to have
the Saints hit back to regain the lead.
Panton Hill got out to its biggest lead of the match
midway through the final term. They were 19 points
up, and appeared to be cruising to victory.
But Watsonia responded yet again. The first of four
goals in quick time came when Tony Hogg kicked it off
the ground from the square.
Jeremy Bennett had been well held by Jeremy
Gercovich, apart from almost taking the mark of the
year in the second term. But he snapped a good goal
after a series of handpasses.
A Brendan Cottier conversion after a great tackle
on Byron was followed by another snapped goal by
Bennett, putting the Saints in front in red time and their
fairytale season looked to be complete.
However, more twists and turns awaited.
Brendan O’Connor passed to Jarrod McGough 35m out
on a tight angle. McGough’s shot never looked like
missing and the lead changed yet again.
At the next centre bounce, Tyler Scarce – one of the
Redbacks’ best throughout the afternoon – found the
quiet Ben Finnin inside 50m.
Finnin’s shot from about 45 metres out surprisingly fell
short. Fortunately for him, Zac Williams took a hanger
4
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
and put his team seven points up.
There were 90 seconds left on the clock. Coach Dean
Haydock, on the sidelines with a sore knee, was
breathing a little easier.
The relentless Saints surged forward again. A desperate
Jeremy Bennett tackle forced a turnover and the
resultant kick was marked by Brody Ricardi.
Ricardi’s fourth goal from an angle reduced the margin
to a single point. But the siren sounded immediately to
leave the Saints agonisingly short of the ultimate prize.
The large contingent of Panton Hill supporters felt
a mixture of joy and relief. It would have seemed
unjust to them to be back-to-back minor premiers
without a flag.
Speaking after the game, premiership coach Dean
Haydock said the flag was a culmination of years of
hard work.
“This flag was 2 years in the making,” Haydock said.
“The players were inspired by the 1955 premiership
players and it was fantastic to celebrate our wins
together.”
Alan Lacey, back pocket in Panton Hill’s 1955
premiership team, presented the cup to Dean
Haydock and captain Will Box. Then the raucous
celebrations began.
Despite being shattered at the loss, playing coach
Lochie Dornauf stressed that he couldn’t be prouder
of his side’s effort on the day and throughout the
entire season.
He also noted that they wore their hearts on their
sleeves and took risks. This was certainly true, but they
also matched it with the Redbacks in the clinches.
Dornauf was among the best for is team, with big men
Daley Bear and Tom Walliss acquitting themselves well.
In a reversal of the senior game, the Saints held on
to win the reserves flag by eight points against the
Redbacks earlier in the day.

MAGPIES BREAK PRESTON HOODOO
by Jackson Baker
Montmorency came from 34 points down halfway
through the last quarter to pull off a sensational sixpoint victory over Bundoora in the second semi final.
After losing their past eight finals matches, the Magpies
finally broke through for a 16.16 (112) to 16.10 (106)
victory at Preston City Oval.
The Magpies became the first team into the 2013
Division 1 Grand Final, setting up a chance to break
their 34-year premiership drought dating back to 1979.
Bundoora looked to have one foot in the premiership
decider when Ricky Dyson set sail from the middle of
the ground on the three quarter time siren to extend its
lead to 35 points.
Gary Moorcroft also looked to have sewn the game up
with his seventh goal at the 10-minute mark of the final
quarter, with Bulls leading 105 to 71. What followed
from the Magpies proved to be game changing.
It was heartbreak for Bundoora who were unable to
hold onto a substantial lead as Montmorency ran over
the top, kicking the final six goals of the game.
It was the second time in as many weeks that the
Bulls faded, after seeing a 51-point lead at threequarter time reduced to 10 against Heidelberg in the
qualifying final.
Trailing by one point late in the fourth quarter, it was
Montmorency captain Ryan Jackson who was awarded
a free kick just inside the 50m forward arc. Jackson
kicked a long drop punt from 55m that never looked
like missing the goals to give his side a five-point lead.
With only a minute left on the clock, Moorcroft marked
40m out with the chance to give the Bulls back the lead
very late in the game. Kicking into a stiff breeze, the ball
appeared to be sailing over the goal umpire’s head before
holding up on the goal line being punched back into play.
The Magpies regained possession and pushed forward
with a snap on goal leading to a point just before the
siren to give them a famous victory.
The efforts of Magpies captain Ryan Jackson and
midfielder Jesse Donaldson, not only in the last quarter
but all game, went a long way to Monty claiming the
victory. Shane Tennant faced the huge task of nullifying
Cameron Cloke and after a shaky first quarter, Tennant
came through as the victor.
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
Ben Walton contributed with five goals, two of those
coming in the last quarter. His efforts didn’t go
unnoticed as he sparked the final quarter comeback
with a long 50m goal.
Both sides have proved to be high scoring sides so it
came as quite a shock when Bundoora led 7.5 (47) to
4.7 (31) at half time in a low scoring game.
Montmorency was a little shaky early in the game,
missing simple targets by foot and hand – something
coach Bryan Cole hounded his players to improve on at
the quarter time break.
Bundoora’s second quarter was very similar to last
week against Heidelberg. It was able to nullify its
opposition and finish with three goals apiece for the
quarter while kicking into the breeze. The Bulls’ second
quarter was the difference last week and almost
proved to be the case again.
What transpired after the half time break was the footy
we had come accustomed to seeing from these top two
sides, with quick end-to-end goals, contested marks
and entertaining footy that the crowd had come to see.
For the Bulls, Moorcroft always looked dangerous up
forward, Brendan Carlyon and Dyson played strong
through the midfield while Matty Dennis played
another great final following a best afield effort
against the Tigers.
On another sour note for the Bulls, injuries to key
players Trent Barbero and Kent Delbridge will be
assessed during the week. Barbero appeared to injure
his hamstring and was visibly frustrated walking off
during the third quarter.
While Barbero appears unlikely to play next week,
Delbridge should be fine after suffering a heavy
knock in the third quarter and was rested for
precautionary measures.
Bundoora must now regain focus as it faces Northcote
Park in the preliminary final this week with the chance
to face off against Montmorency in the Division 1
Grand Final.

EAGLES SET UP SHOWDOWN WITH STARS
by Ben Pascuzzi
Whittlesea shrugged off a Shane Harvey-less North
Heidelberg to book its place in the 2013 Division 2
Grand Final against the Fitzroy Stars.
The Eagles looked to have the preliminary final sewn up
nearing the end of the third term when leading by 36
points, but a last quarter surge from the Bulldogs took
the game right down to the wire.
In the end missed opportunities cost the Dogs as they went
down 17.10 (112) 13.11 (89) at Eltham Central Reserve.
The Eagles looked dominant throughout parts of the
match and, despite some fade-outs, were able to atone
for their 51-point defeat against the Stars in the second
semi final.
Andrew Fairchild was at his usual best and his fivegoal haul took his season’s tally to 100, becoming the
second player in Division 2 to reach the magical figure
behind Harvey.
He did so with the final kick of the afternoon, getting
paid a 50m penalty as the siren sounded to send the
Eagles into the Grand Final on a high.
Whittlesea got off to a brilliant start, booting the first
three goals of the game to amass a 19-point lead
midway through the first term. With goals to Matthew
Atta, Nathan Andrews and Fairchild, the Eagles were in
prime position and had all the momentum.
But the Dogs dug their way out of what looked to be
significant trouble and slammed on the next four goals
of the game to take a five-point lead late in the term.
Kicked into gear, the Eagles once again stepped it up
a notch and took back the lead with two quick goals
within a minute.
The game quickly became a shootout as North
Heidelberg responded with the next goal through
some brilliant work from Andre Habchi.
A quick kick from the resulting centre clearance landed
in John Green’s arms and he calmly slotted the shot
at goal after the quarter-time siren to give North
Heidelberg a five-point lead.
Despite facing a deficit, Whittlesea came out refreshed
after the break and got off to a flyer courtesy of two
Fairchild goals in the opening minutes of the second term.
The contest see-sawed throughout most of the quarter,
with both sides exchanging
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
goals, but it was ultimately Whittlesea who won the
term to take a 19-point lead into the long break.
The Dogs started the third term better and were
attacking from the outset. However, their good build up
play was let down by some missed opportunities when
making an avenue towards goals.
The Eagles on the other hand only needed one chance
as Atta booted the first goal of the second half. He then
followed up with another soon after to hand his side a
commanding 32-point lead.
They weren’t done there, with Brenton Briffa kicking
a brilliant snap goal to seemingly put the first nail in
the coffin of North Heidelberg’s season as the margin
stretched to 36 nearing three-quarter time.
But a late goal at the opposite end to Blake Holmes
gave the Dogs some hope as they headed into the final
term trailing by 30 points.
Playing with nothing to lose, North Heidelberg flew out
of the blocks in the fourth quarter, booting the first two
goals to cut the margin to 17 points.
As they had done so often throughout this match and
the season, the Eagles were able to find a goal when
looking troubled, courtesy of a calmly taken set shot
from Atta.
North Heidelberg continued to fight out the game
and slammed on the next two goals to get within
nine points of the Eagles. With plenty of time left on
the clock, the North faithful had genuine hope that a
miraculous come-from-behind win could eventuate.
But it wasn’t to be a fairytale comeback as Whittlesea
rounded out the game with the final two goals to go
into the Grand Final – a just reward after claiming the
minor premiership following a dominant home and
away season.
On the back of losses to the Fitzroy Stars in their
previous two encounters, the Eagles will head into the
premiership decider as the slight underdogs in what is
sure to be a thrilling clash at Preston City Oval.
North Heidelberg on the other hand is out of the finals
race. Given the club’s long injury list throughout the
year, a third-place finish was a credible achievement.
Final score: Whittlesea 17.10 (112) def North
Heidelberg 13.11 (89)

SAINTS WIN RESERVES FLAG
by Jarrad Conron
Watsonia claimed the 2013 Division 3 reserves
premiership with a close win over Panton Hill at Epping
Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
The Saints had to hold off a fast-finishing Redbacks
outfit to take the flag with a 8.8 (56) to 7.6 (48) win.
Watsonia controlled the match from the outset and did
most of the attacking in the first term. The Saints sprayed
their first three shots at goal before Eldon Abbott was
able to kick truly for the first major of the Grand Final.
The ball went end-to-end in a scrappy tem of football with
both teams hardly troubling the scorers in the stanza.
Lachlan Pearson was able to kick the Redbacks’ first.
Pearson starred up forward for the losing side, slotting four
in total and was clearly Panton Hill’s best player on the day.
The second quarter went very much the same as the first.
The play stayed scrappy and clean possessions were hard
to come by with the pressure intense from both sides.
Both teams were only able to muster a goal each for
the quarter, with the scores tied at 2.4 (16) apiece at the
main break. No doubt coaching staff from both camps
would have been trying to devise alternative avenues
to goal during the long break.
Both sides came out of the rooms firing in the third
term, but it was Watsonia who was able to break the
game open in a decisive period which ultimately
decided the premiership.
The Saints were first to the ball on most occasions and
were able to change the flow of the game, getting
clean possession and using the ball well.
They were able to pile on four goals to nil in the third
term to take what looked like an unassailable lead
going into the final quarter.
Watsonia was able to keep up its momentum through
to the start of the final quarter with Jamie Harris
kicking his second goal for the day in a best-on-ground
performance.
The Saints had one hand on the cup but seemed to
then take their foot off the pedal, as the Redbacks
kicked the next goal, just their third of the day.
Watsonia was able to steady with the next major to
regain its 32-point lead, but again it looked as if it had
started celebrations too early.
8
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
Panton Hill kicked four straight goals in a last-ditch
effort to snatch the premiership out of the Saints’
hands. However, it ultimately left its run too late.
As the final siren sounded, the initial reaction of the
Watsonia players was one of relief after receiving a
major scare late.
Harris was awarded the best on ground medallion
with an outstanding game, racking up possession after
possession and slotting two majors.
Nicholas Brock was tough to miss out on best on ground
honours as he held the Redbacks’ leading goal kicker
Daniel Pratt goalless in a spectacular game down back.
Panton Hill will face a major challenge next year,
moving up to Division 2 after watching their seniors get
a taste of premiership glory with a one-point win over
the Watsonia in a thrilling Grand Final.
Watsonia’s reserves will now aim to defend their title
next season when again competing in Division 3.
Final score: Watsonia 8.8 (56) def Panton Hill 7.6 (48)

WWW. NFL. ORG. AU
Northern Netball League
The Northern Football League
(NFL) is excited to announce
the creation of a new entity
under its banner – the Northern
Netball League (NNL).
The league’s Netball Chairman
Jeff Parkes described the
announcement as “an
opportunity for both leagues to grow and develop
within their own frameworks whilst remaining
intrinsically connected”.
The NFL launched a netball competition in 2008 to
encourage more female engagement within its football
and sporting clubs as well as driving cultural change.
Commencing with eight teams in its first year, the
competition has grown to now cover six sections, involving
22 clubs. The competition has established itself as one of
the largest senior netball competitions in metropolitan
Melbourne and continues to grow on a yearly basis.
The growth and development of this competition has
now led to the introduction of a junior competition
(commencing mid-October) and a return to affiliation
with Netball Victoria. The NFL has determined that
in order to continue to advance this aspect of our
community, an identifiable brand aligned to the sport
in which this competition resides was vital.
Along with this, the Board of the NFL has altered the
entry criteria for competing clubs within the NNL.
Incorporated clubs not necessarily aligned with
NFL clubs may enter teams within either the junior
or senior NNL competitions and new competitions
including social and mixed variations are planned for
future seasons.
The NFL will be assigning dedicated full-time staff to
the running of the NNL and further announcements
in this regard will be made shortly. The NNL
administration will operate out of the offices of the

Heatley and Davies Recommit to Cougars
Northcote Park Football Club has announced that
senior coach Jason Heatley has been re-appointed for
season 2014.
Heatley has had great success leading Northcote Park
and the club had been in negotiations for the past few
weeks to retain the 2012 Northern Football Region
Coach of the Year.
In 2012, Northcote Park became the first team to win a
Northern Football League Division 1 premiership after
finishing outside the top three. The Cougars have once
again played great football in this year’s final series –
culminating in a clash with Bundoora in this week’s
preliminary final.
The club feels this has been in no small way a byproduct of having Jason as senior coach, with his ability
to get the best out of the playing group a testament to
his people management skills.
In another positive move for the club, it has also in the
same week signed its premiership captain and reigning
Frank Rosbrook Trophy winner, Bronik Davies.

Captain for the past three years, he led the Cougars

outstanding courage and ball winning ability.
Other appointments are legendary football manager
John Matthew, who will return to this role for season

PONSORS The Highlighter – Bundoora v Northcote Park
A showdown against Montmorency in the 2013 Grand Final
awaits both Bundoora and Northcote Park when they meet
in the preliminary final at Preston City Oval on Sunday.
Bundoora had to use its double chance to get to this
encounter after letting slip a 40-point lead against the
Magpies in last week’s second semi final.
Northcote Park, on the other hand, is the form side of
the competition and romped to its second huge finals
win when it thumped Heidelberg last Sunday.
How the Bulls respond to last week’s devastating loss
is the great unknown. They had one foot in the Grand
Final when Ricky Dyson goaled from 80m on the threequarter time siren, but coughed up a big lead for the
second week running.
In an alarming statistic, they have been outscored by 15 goals
to three in their two fourth terms in this year’s finals series.
Injuries remain a concern with James Lord and Andrew
Carmusciano both missing last Saturday, while star
defender Trent Barbero also looks under an injury cloud
after failing to play out the match.
Those are the negatives, but the positive has been their
blistering form during the opening three quarters of
the past fortnight.
At their best, the Bulls are very well capable of taking out
this year’s premiership, as exemplified by their ability to
extend out to leads of more than six goals against quality
opposition in the first two weeks of the finals series.
Gary Moorcroft heads into this clash in blistering
form, following a seven-goal haul – the same amount
he booted in his last clash against Northcote Park.
Meantime, Matthew Dennis and Adrian Papaluca are
both in superb form after two massive finals games.
Having followed its ten-goal belting of Eltham with
an equally impressive 57-point win over Heidelberg,
Northcote Park is looking every chance of repeating
history and winning a premiership from fourth place on
the ladder.
Playing a captivating brand of football suited perfectly
to Preston City Oval, the Cougars continue to run
opposition teams off their feet.
Their ball use through half back is exceptional thanks
to the sublime foot skills of Shaun Lorenzini, Nick Carter
and Ben McNeice, while forwards Koden Colman and
Patrick O’Connell combined for 11 goals last week.
A number of emerging youngsters played a huge role
in dashing Heidelberg’s dream of a tenth-successive
Grand Final appearance, with rangy forward James
Hodder and Kane Slater playing their part and Brock
McLennan displaying football wares beyond his years.
The concern was an injury to run-with player Daniel
Ledda who didn’t feature after half time against
Heidelberg and will be missed against Bundoora’s
strong midfield if he doesn’t come up this Sunday.
Honours have been shared between the sides this year,
with Northcote Park claiming a three-goal win at home in
Round 3, before Bundoora came from 35 points down early
in the second term to claim a 41-point win in Round 18.
The sides also met in last year’s finals series, where
Northcote Park prevailed by 20 points to end
Bundoora’s 2012 campaign.

BUNDOORA
Back at Cramer St this Sunday for a crack in the prelim
against last year’s premier. A massive day for our club so
get down and support the Bulls
SENIORS: Went so close to going straight through to
the Grand Final but looks like we will have to go the
long way now if we want to be any chance. Started well
and looked to be on top all day. When Dyso rolled one
home from 80m on the three-quarter time siren we
were a massive chance. Mont had the wind in the last
and with a few key players done for the day we couldn’t
hang on. Was a great game of footy with an ordinary
result! Hopefully we get the chance to have another
crack at them. Gaz was unbelievable on his way to
seven goals and Cam chipped in with three. Sal and the
Skipper kicked two each and the others came from the
left boots of Varsa and Dyso. Gaz was BOG for his effort
up forward, Matty D worked well around the ground
and the midfield of Brendo and Joey were on top. Papa
was busy also. Must beat the reigning premiers this
week to give ourselves a chance at redemption.
NORTHCOTE PARK
The seniors are into the preliminary final up against
our old foes Bundoora, although the under-19s were
ousted in straight sets.
SENIORS: The senior boys do like playing at Preston
City Oval during September. We got over Heidelberg
by 58 points everyone was prepared to put in 100
percent with our running and foot passing. Koden
Colman and Pat O’Connell were damaging in front
of goals kicking 11 between then. Ben McNiece,
Shaun Lorenzini and Damian Galofaro controlled the
back line. Nick Carter was flawless in his game. Brock
McLennan was unstoppable and ended up with three
goals, while James Hodder and Kane Slater were
excellent from start to finish. Daniel Ledda did not
reappear after half time let’s hope everything is fine for
next week. Well done boys.
UNDER-19: We went out of the finals following a
96-point defeat by West Preston-Lakeside who was by
far the better side on the day. The boys tried hard all
day but were unable to keep up with the Roosters. I
am sure if we all stick together for next year and work

RESERVES: Dirty day to be honest. But, gave ourselves
a double chance by playing good footy during the
year and have the chance to bounce back this week.
Heidelberg was the only side to kick us off during
the year so this match is going to be a beauty. We
struggled against Boro, who had a fair side in, and must
play better this week. Only three single goal scorers
registered last week. Best were Brekke (who now
follows the Magpies from SA), Robbie, Hamring, the
best looking Mitchell at the club, Bel and Trenta.
PRESENTATION NIGHT: Presentation Night will be
held at The Manningham Club, Bulleen on Saturday,
October 12. The last 5 rounds of the under-19s, reserves
and seniors will be counted on the night. See Maureen
Grant, Max Grant, Brayden Shaw or Nipper Marshall to
arrange your table of 8-10 maximum. Always the last
club function for the year so let’s make sure we support
the club and get some huge numbers for what is sure
to be a fantastic night.

a little bit harder we will be back at Preston City Oval
come September next year. Thank you to Tony (coach)

and special thanks to Rosa, Victoria, Maristel, Stephanie,

The Highlighter – Fitzroy Stars v Whittlesea
by Michael Thompson
Division 2 culminates this Saturday at Preston City
Oval with Fitzroy Stars and Whittlesea playing off for
the right to play with the Northern Football League’s
elite in season 2014.
Fitzroy Stars have the psychological edge heading into
the premiership decider, having beaten the Eagles in
their two previous encounters this season. That includes
a 51-point triumph in the second semi final– which was
driven by an 11-goal last quarter at Lalor Reserve.
After falling at the second last hurdle to North Heidelberg
in 2012, the Stars have already progressed one step
further in 2013 and will be hoping for their maiden
premiership in only their sixth season in the NFL.
Captain and 2012 Division 2 Best and Fairest Lionel Proctor
has once again produced an excellent season, playing
every game and should once again figure prominently in
the Division 2 vote count on September 16.
However, it is not only Proctor’s work which has taken
the Stars this far. Midfield dynamos Alex Isailovic,
Malcolm Dow, Kaelun Brown and Jai Burns have formed
one of the most potent midfields in the competition.
They are able to frequently give opportunities to
forwards Patrick Davis, John Hayes, Corey Wanganeen
and David Welsh. At the other end of the ground, Justin
Settle and Jake McCauley are well equipped to take on
Whittlesea’s equally potent forward line.
The Eagles have not had an entirely convincing finals series,
but have earned their spot thanks to a 23-point preliminary
final victory over North Heidelberg at Eltham last week.
After finishing on top of the ladder with a 16-2 record,
the Eagles were outplayed by the Stars a fortnight ago
and will look to send departing coach Peter Bugden
out with a bang and seek the best retribution possible
when it matters.
Andrew Fairchild became the second player to reach
100 goals in season 2013 on the last kick of the
preliminary final, and will be Whittlesea’s go to man in
the forward line. With support from Paul Harrison and
Lucas Hobbs, Whittlesea will favour themselves to kick
a big score.
If the Eagles are to win, they must address the midfield
battle and not allow Fitzroy to engineer their run and
carry on the outside. Ruckman Jeremy Page will need to
put in a big game and feed his midfield brigade, in order
to prevent the Stars on-ballers from overwhelming the
Eagles as they did in the second semi.
The Eagles’ defence will also have to be on their game,
with many of the Stars goals in the aforementioned
final created through crumbing opportunities. The
defence, marshalled by Dale Saddington, will have to
work together to prevent Fitzroy’s high scoring ways,
having conceded well over 100 points each time they
have played the Stars in 2013.
After the thrilling conclusion to last weekend’s Division
3 Grand Final, the Division 2 decider has a lot to live
up to, and these two sides are the best equipped to
provide us with another thriller.

Deards – Mr Reliable is rarely beaten and can go back or forward.
Smart footballer. 29. Byron Page – Standing a little shorter than
his brother, Byron makes up for it with an outrageous leap. Is rarely
beaten in the ruck. 34. Jordan Ormerod – Has an amazing ability
tosqueezehimselfoutoftightspaceswithadeftsidestep.Solidskills
and uncompromising toughness. 35. Riley Dyson –The youngest
of the Dyson brothers, 2013 has been a breakout year for Riley
playing as an on-baller. Will contest the B&F. 39. Max Dyson –You
wouldn’t believe he was related to the other Dysons. 6’3 and lean,
Socksy is the fittest man at the Eagles. 51. Matt Atta – Came to us
mid-season after a stint at the Northern Blues. Agile defender who
canrunlikeamidfielderandhasthestrengthtomatchthestrongest
forwards. 52. Scott McAuliffe – ScoMac is fit, fast and undeniably
tough. Runs all day and finds the footy himself. Hates being beaten.

FITZROY STARS
What a great feeling it is for our club only being back
into the competition for five years and playing off in a
Grand Final.
SENIORS: Could not have been more impressive a
fortnight ago in a 52-point win. Although Whittlesea got
off to a flyer, our boys settled well and won the remaining
three quarters. All the on-ballers got their hands on the
footy and our backline stood tall with Keithy playing his
best game and Leigh, Justin, Jacko, Joshy and Coz were
hell-bent on not allowing the opposition to score. Once
again, all our forwards had an impact on the scoreboard.
We are particularly proud of our efforts and we are hoping
we can add some silverware to the cabinet for the first
time in 20 plus years. We will have to bring our A-game
to beat such a strong outfit as Whittlesea but we have the
confidence it can be done.
RESERVES: Had a terrific year but unfortunately went
down to Diamond Creek last week. Matty Seadon was a
stand-out down back, with Brendon, Franky and Gordo
all having a crack. Leigh should be congratulated on his
efforts and coming third is no disgrace.
NETBALL: Heartbreak for the A grade girls who
courageously went down in extra time when they
WHITTLESEA
After a successful 2013, where the club lost only six home
and away games, we go into the biggest day of the club’s
117-year history as all three teams play off in the Grand Final.
SENIORS: After taking out the minor premiership,
the semi final loss to Fitzroy Stars was not in our
overall plans. But a strong win last week against a very
impressive North Heidelberg outfit has us primed and
ready. Congratulations to ‘Spider’ who kicked his 100th
goals for the year last week. Co-captains Garrett and
Roy were both huge in last week’s win. When it comes
down to the games that truly matter, these blokes
shine. Also, a massive congratulations to Pete Bugden
who goes into his last game today as the only coach
to take Whittlesea to the top flight. After a successful
six years, WFNC are extremely proud of what Pete has
achieved. A massive season comes to fruition today
and, after being the best team all season, let’s take
home what we have striven for all year.
RESERVES: Despite delivering a stirring win against
today’s opponent in the semi-final, the reserves go into
today’s match as underdogs and it’s exactly what they
want. Gaz has the boy’s playing a fast, tough and skilful
brand of footy and expect the Eagles to give it an almighty

deserved so much more. C grade had a fantastic win in the
second semi to advance into the Grand Final as the team
to beat. Get to Parade at 8pm Friday to cheer them on!
TOOL OF THE YEAR: It is with great delight that we
can announce that Gordo is Tool of the Year. Obviously
Lukey was favourite but the bookies have cleaned up
with Gordo never being too far away from trouble. Let’s
hope his form continues well into September.
THANKS: The Fitzroy Stars would also like to
acknowledge our sponsors, namely AAL, VACSAL,
VAHS, Oxfam, VicHealth, VALS, VACCA, ACES, Junction
Hotel and VAEAI and we would also like to show our
appreciation to our community partnerships support:
DHS, Departent of Justice, NIFVRAG, RAJAC and White
Ribbon. We hope you’ve all enjoyed the great year
we’ve had and really thank you all for your support.
WELL DONE: It was with great pride that the Fitzroy
Stars were the winner of the Statewide RAJAC
Innovation award which recognises the work we have
been doing within our community. It was an extremely
proud moment for Uncle Phil to accept this prestigious
award on behalf of the club and it shows that this club
is so much more than just a football and netball club.
Bring on the big day.
GO STARS
crack! The return of Stevie D has been huge, while Jack
Dyson and Paddy Schott have also been standouts.
UNDER-19: Undefeated throughout the H&A season,
the under-19s loss to St Mary’s in the semi-final was
unexpected, but almost needed to wake the boys up. After
taking care of Diamond Creek last weekend, expect the
Eagles’ boys to come out firing today. Lukey Carroll and
Lachy Harrison have the x-factor for the Eagles, while the
Pupillo brothers, Lee Hughes and Porkchop have been
great. Good luck to the future of the Whittlesea and let’s
hope they bring home the first of three premierships.
TONIGHT: Win, lose or draw, there will be a function
at the club tonight to celebrate what has been a huge
growth year for the club.
$10,000 DRAW: Tomorrow someone will win $10,000
at the Eagles’ annual draw. With tickets still available at
$100, bring a mate and get to the Dyson Entertainment
Centre for lunch and the draw.
PRESENTATION NIGHT: Friday, September 20 from
7pm at the Emerald Reception Centre – 213-215
Settlement Rd, Thomastown. $100 a ticket includes
three-course meal, beer, wine and soft drink.
It’s the year of the Eagle and it starts today.

Whistle Whispers
Welcome to the Division 2 Grand Final edition of
Whistle Whispers. Congratulations to the Division 3
Grand Final umpires.
You certainly had some close games and by all accounts
umpired magnificently. Good luck to all Division 2
Grand Final umpires and teams.
Not a lot of news came out of the weekend. Chippy
got a late call up and was so excited to get another
final he left home without a very important piece of
equipment for an umpire – his whistles! Talking of
leaving home without important equipment, one
young umpire who is very involved in cycling got 10
minutes up the road heading to a championship race
last Sunday … without his bike! Guess who?
PRESENTATION NIGHT: Our last major function
for the year is our annual Senior Presentation
Night. After a number of suggestions last year,
we have obtained the services of a band so we
expect everyone to be up dancing on the night.
The event is on October 4 commencing at 7:30 at
the Casa D’Abruzzo Club – 55 O’Herns Road Epping.
Cost is just $40 a head for a three-course meal and
entertainment. Drinks at normal bar price. Dress
is smart after 5/formal – definitely no denim. For
catering and organisation we need you to RSVP as
soon as possible but by Friday, September 27 at the
latest. Tickets cannot be paid in cash on the night so
please pay Tony or Craig at training or match days,
or by Paypal or EFT. We expect to see all Grand Final
umpires in attendance.
GOLF DAY: The annual golf day is on Sunday,
October 27 at Whittlesea Golf Course. Family and
friends are most welcome to attend. Please indicate
your intentions to play with Craig Herman. More
details to follow.
