Q&A with Sunday Worship Schedule our President Bible Class David Temme Morning Worship 9:15 AM 10:30 AM Evening Worship 7:00 PM Q: Thanks for serving as the President of our congregation. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? A: I lived in Evansville, Indiana until I was 10, but I’ve lived in northeastern Indiana since then. My dad has a mechanical engineering degree from Purdue, and I did robotics in high school, so Purdue was at the top of my college list. After visiting ULu and meeting Pastor Barton (recently retired), I was sold on coming here. During the school year I have always lived in Fairway Cooperative, a house of 60 Christian guys. Q: How did you get involved at ULu? A: I would go to the Sunday Morning Bible Class. As far as responsibilities go, I initially worked my way through music. I played piano for some evening services my first semester and my second semester I was “promoted” to be in the Sunday morning organist rotation. I’ve also been a church mouse and the financial secretary. Q: What have you enjoyed about your experiences at ULU? A: After I was confirmed in junior high, everyone said I would be considered an adult in the congregation, but there weren’t really any opportunities for me to serve. Here, the congregation has been very supportive, giving me responsibilities and leadership that I couldn’t have before. Also, the town members give me the respect you would expect to receive from peers. I feel that because ULu treats students as adults, we are more likely to act like adults. For more information about our worship services or Bible Studies, or to see a calendar of events, visit our website at http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~lsf The Church Trustees are excited and grateful to highlight the following work being done at the church this summer: • New Flooring: Miller’s Flooring America is replacing the carpeting and vinyl tile in the sanctuary, narthex, and choir loft. • Pew Refinishing: Jack’s Custom Woodshop is refinishing all pews, returning them to a color similar to the altar wood. You will notice missing pews as this work is being completed! • Landscaping: Branching Out has removed all of the old landscaping and reformed the bedding areas, filling them with river rock. Ultimately we plan to add new plants and shrubs. • Second Floor Clean-‐up and Reorganization: Diane Gee and Karen Mullen have spearheaded the efforts to clean and improve the second floor living and work areas. Great progress has been made and a Clean-‐Up Day is planned for th
July 12 . More details to come! “For God so loved the world he gave His only Begotten Son that whoever believes in Him shall never die but have eternal life.” John 3:16 Continued on page 2 Q&A with David Temme, continued from page 1 Q: What would you say to encourage other students to get involved at ULu? A: Attend a Bible study. They are a great way to stay in the Word, talk about your faith, and meet other Lutheran students. Also, tithe. For those of us without an income during the school year, we can still tithe our time and there are plenty of ways to do that at ULu. Just to name a few examples, you can serve on the church council, work as a church mouse, or help with the capital campaign.
Q: Do you have any advice for new students? A: Invest in what lasts. Once I graduate I’ll say goodbye to my friends here. Our degrees will be irrelevant when we retire. Marriage only lasts until death. But we will be with Christ for eternity. It doesn’t make any sense to spend only an hour a week (0.6% of our time) to nurture our faith when it is so much more important than other things. Invest in the Scriptures, invest in ULu. Q: I understand you’re graduating in December. What is your degree and where do you see yourself in five years? A: I will graduate with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. I hope to find a job related to machine or product design. If the Lord wills, I will be a husband, maybe even a father. I could see myself spending time to improve my organ improvisation. meet our new Secretary We would like to welcome our new church secretary, Brynne Schultz. Brynne comes to University Lutheran from Columbus, Indiana, where she worked as a legal secretary and attended St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Her husband, Steve, works at Purdue as a lawyer and together they have four daughters: Evelyn, Anna, Audrey and Mary Claire. Brynne is excited to serve at ULu! She has two college students of her own, and became a Christian herself while attending a Lutheran campus church at Marquette University in Milwaukee. “Campus ministry is very close to my heart as some of my earliest and most vivid memories as a Christian are with those Christian friends I made at college,” says Brynne. Please welcome Brynne warmly to our ULu family! Prayer
